Damallsvenskan: Stockholm derby draw

Djurgården - AIK - (1-1)
Djurgården: Nadine Angerer - Madelene Göras, Ariane Hingst, Therese Brogårde, Sara Thunebro - Marijke Callebaut, Ann-Marie Norlin, Anna Hall, Rebecca Johnson (46 Linda Sällström) - Jennifer Meier (66 Anna Lagerberth), Victoria Svensson
AIK: Sofia Lundgren - Sofia Simonsson, Linda Sembrant, Frida Höglund, Linda Lekander - Elin Ekblom Bak, Anne Mäkinen, Jessica Julin (69 Emelie Karlsson Wedin), Louise Fors - Lisa de Vanna (75 Kate Gill), Emma Lundh (57 Annica Sjölund)
Goals: 0-1 Lisa de Vanna (20), 1-1 Marijke Callebaut (31)
Attendance: 1,012
AIK opened best and got the lead when Lisa de Vanna chipped Nadine Angerer in Djurgården's goal. The match was closely fought with fairly few scoring opportunities, but quite a lot of possession for AIK. Marijke Callebaut equalised after ten minutes, capitalising on the good preparation by Victoria Svensson. In the second half, and the more the longer the game continued, Djurgården took over and pressed hard the last 15 minutes. It still ended in a draw.
"AIK will be one of the top teams this season", commented Djurgården's coach Anders Johansson. AIK's Elin Ekblom, last year in Djurgården, pointed out that Djurgården always are supposed to win, while AIK can go in and play without that pressure. At least they have so far. After a narrow 1-0 loss to last years number one Umeå and 1-1 against the number two, it feels like they're on the right track.

Damallsvenskan: More newbie upsets

Damallsvenskan openers are usually well attended, but this dark, cold, wet (rain in the south, snow in the north) and windy Wednesday night that didn't look anything like spring, didn't attract many fans to the stadia. Worst off was Bälinge, who had been forced to abandon their home ground in the city centre for a field turf training field without stands in the outskirts of town. 174 is a crowd figure from the 1990's.

The Swedish Football Association has introduced a new web-service for Damallsvenskan this season. The same livescore service that are used in the men's premier league will now also be used for the women. The livescore opens one hour before kick-off and you reach it at
www.svenskfotboll.se/livescore. Great service, it worked flawlessly Wednesday night, and recommended for those of you that simply can't wait to find out what's happening.

AIK - Umeå IK 0 - 1 (0-0)

AIK: Sofia Lundgren - Sofia Simonsson, Frida Höglund, Linda Sembrant, Linda Lekander (88 Annica Sjölund) - Elin Ekblom Bak, Anne Mäkinen, Jessica Julin, Louise Fors (83 Emelie Karlsson Wedin) - Emma Lundh (69 Kate Gill), Lisa de Vanna
Umeå: Carola Söberg - Anna Paulsson, Johanna Frisk, Emma Berglund, June Pedersen (46 Hanna Ljungberg) - Lisa Dahlqvist, Frida Östberg, Mami Yamaguchi - Johanna Rasmussen (56 Ramona Bachmann), Madeleine Edlund (77 Sofia Jakobsson), Marta
Goals: 1-0 Hanna Ljungberg (82)
Attendance: 932
Hosting AIK, who fell 4-0 and 8-0 against Umeå last year, almost provided an upset, but Umeå was saved by a late goal by Hanna Ljungberg. Recieving the ball from Marta (who else?) inside the box, turned away from the goal and with a defender on her back, she still managed create some space for herself and placed the shot in the far corner. A quality goal.
Up til the last maybe 15 minutes, AIK had looked a lot like the better side. This was particulary true in the first half, where AIK had four shots at goal before Umeå managed to create anything. They pressured far up in the field and kept feeding their speedy forward Lisa de Vanna with passes, who had at least four good chances. They even had a goal inside, from an Elin Ekblom header, but it was disallowed.
Both sides seemed somewhat disappointed. AIK's Benny Persson thought his team should have had at least a draw and Lisa de Vanna, who impressed on most viewers in her Damallsvenskan debut, was disappointed that she didn't manage to score on any of her chances. Umeå's captain Frida Östberg congratulated her team to their spirit and work ethic, that helped them turn the match around after a disappointing first half.

Örebro: Kristin Hammarström - Ingrid Ericson, Stina Stegerström, Sanna Valkonen, Caroline Näfver - Maria Nordbrant, Marina Pettersson, Lena Andersson, Marie Hammarström - Elin Magnusson, Leena Puranen (84 Kim Ekebom)
Attendance: 174
Bälinge, against all predictions, got a great start. They managed to hold on to the ball in the midfield and make the right passes to Ida Brännström and Emma Jonsson (both making their first match for Bälinge). But after about 30 minutes, Bälinge began to lose balls, defense and midfield fell deep in front of their own goal and Örebro dominated the rest of the match, producing close to 20 shots at goal. But Bälinge's Veronica Svensson had a great day and saved one point for Bälinge.

Attendance: 301
An extremely efficient Malmö didn't give Hammarby much chance. Nilla Fischer in her defensive midfield position won everything that came in her area and distributed the ball to the wings. Hammarby's young reserve keeper Lisa Mattsson (replacing Kathrin Lehmann, who was playing icehockey World Championship with Switzerland) had a difficult task in her first Damallsvenskan match. Malmö coach Jörgen Pettersson was pleased that his system worked, at least against Hammarby, while Hammarby coaches and players just wanted to forget the match and move on.
Hammarby's veteran Kristin Bengtsson had to leave with a muscle injury late in the match. She will probably need a four week rest before she can return to the game.

Umeå Södra FF - Sunnanå SK 2 - 1 (1-1)
Umeå Södra: Minna Meriluoto - Anna Rehn, Moa Westermark, Petra Vaelma, Ragna Lestander - Anna Forss (63 Linda Fransson), Emma Sundberg, Hanna Folkesson, Terese Andersson - Jennifer Nobis, Vanessa Mångsén (73 Patricia Hägglund)
Sunnanå: Åsa Berglund - Carina Holmberg, Sanna Frostevall (77 Lisa Renberg), Marjam Marklund, Alexamdra Nilsson - Kristina Wiklund, Anna Bodén, Josefin Johansson, Johanna Lindahl - Perpetua Nkwocha, Lina Johansson
Goals: 1-0 Hanna Folkesson (5), 1-1 Lina Johansson (20), 2-1 Linda Fransson (70)
Attendance: 342
Just like the other newcomers Kristianstad, Umeå Södra managed an upset. They opened optimistic and Hanna Folkesson got a goal already after less than five minutes. But after that Sunnanå took over the match and Umeå Södra very rarely came out of defense. It took them 25 minutes before thay had their first second half attack, Nobis firing a shot that the keeper couldn't keep and Linda Fransson, fresh from the bench, scored on the rebound. The rest was defense for Södra and botched scoring chances for Sunnanå.

Damallsvenskan: Kristianstad upsets Djurgården

Kristianstad - Djurgården 2 - 1 (2-0)
Kristianstad: Maria Edman - Johanna Jönsson, Maria Åhlund, Johanna Rosén, Carolin Ericsson - Therese Björk (63 Pernilla Falk), Vlora Bajraktaraj, Sofie Persson, Erla Arnadottir - Frida Petersson (87 Maria Nilsson), Susanne Moberg (37 Elin Bjerre)
Djurgården: Nadine Angerer - Madelene Göras, Ariane Hingst, Therese Brogårde, Sara Thunebro - Rebecca Jonsson, Marijke Callebaut (72 Anna Lagerberth), Anna Hall, Linda Sällström (62 Jennifer Meier) - Linda Forsberg, Victoria Svensson
Goals: 1-0 Susanna Moberg (20), 2-0 Frida Petersson (42), 2-1 Victoria Svensson (54 PK)
Attendance: 2,221
Damallsvenskan started the season with a huge upset. Newcomers Kristianstad defeated last year's runners-up Djurgården. And they didn't do it by bunkering in defense and relying on counters. When Susanne Moberg scored their first goal after 20 minutes, Kristianstad could count four shots on goal against Djurgården's none. Sofie Persson and Vlora Bajraktaraj dominated in midfield, with Persson being the architect behind Kristianstad's offensive, feeding attackers Moberg and Frida Pettersson with deep passes to run with. Djurgården's defense were repeatedly overrun and you couldn't see that they had two seasoned internationals (Hingst and Thunebro) in the back line.

Goalscorer Moberg had to leave already after half an hour with what turned out to be a minor muscle tear, but that didn't hamper the home team's play. Shortly before the break Bajraktaraj caught a stray ball just outside the area and served Frida Pettersson, who ran past Djurgården's Angerer and scored in an open goal. After the recess Kristianstad continued to stand up well, encouraged by the record crowd at Vilans IP, and it wasn't until the last 20 minutes that Djurgården could take command. They had reduced with a Victoria Svensson penalty kick (too much wrestling from a Kristianstad defender in a corner kick shuffle) and hunted for at least an equaliser. A tired Kristianstad defense still managed to fend them off and when keeper Maria Edman blocked a Victoria Svensson shot from close distance in the last minutes, the sensational result was a fact.

The Kristianstad side was, understandably, extremely happy with everything after the match. Djurgården's Anders Johansson on the other side was, equally understandable, very disappointed and called his team's approach "naive", which might be translated to "hugely underestimating". They lost a lot of balls trying to short-pass in midfield and the defense was slow and badly organized. Kristianstad journalists have been working hard to find different ways to enjoy the win and, let's not forget that, gloat. One of them calculated that Djurgården fielded 9 internationals with 422 matches experience. Kristianstad had 25 caps, all belonging to Icelandic midfielder Erla Arnadottir.

Damallsvenskan final round: Marta signs for 2008

With the only thing left to play for this last Damallsvenskan match day being if Linköping should manage to grab the fifth place from Sunnanå (after finishing third and winning the Swedish Cup last season it would still be a disappointment, but there are degrees even in hell), something else had to bring the excitement. Marta confessed in half time that she really would like to win the goalscorer league and had total control over the standing: she had scored two goals in the first half, but Lotta Schelin had scored one, keeping Schelin one goal ahead. Marta never managed to get any closer than that, but gave the viewers another surprise. When she came back after the recess, she sported a new match shirt (gold-coloured as the team had dressed up for the occasion), with the text "Marta - signed for 2008" surrounding the main sponsor logo (the main sponsor that put in the extra money that made the deal financially possible for Umeå). The new contract was signed already a couple of days ago, but the Umeå people never lets a good marketing stunt slip, so they had managed to keep it under wraps. Marta said after the match that the money hadn't been a deciding factor when renewing her contract. Staying with her friends in Umeå and playing in the league where she had the best conditions to continue to develop as a player settled it for her. At least for 2008, she seemed open to reconsider for 2009, without actually spelling it out. And when Umeå's manager Roland Arnqvist answered the question why only a one year contract, he said "we would still have been negotiating two months from now" if they had tried for a longer deal.

Damallsvenskan Round XXI: Umeå champions, Qbik relegated

Umeå celebrated their league championship with an 8 goal pounding of AIK, pleasing the big home crowd. Djurgården's and Malmö's victories secured their second and third places while Qbik's failure to defeat Göteborg made relegation unevitable. And in spite of their huge loss to Umeå, AIK will most probably survive in the highest division - they have a 3 points and 14 goals advantage over Falköping. With one round left to play everything seems settled except the oh so exciting struggle for fifth place...

Falköpings KIK - Djurgården  0 - 4 (0-1)
Falköping: Malin Andersson - Nettan Hofling, Elin Osbeck, Emma Eriksson, Sandra Krantz, Madeleine Tegström, Cynthia Uwak (68 Therese Larsson), Jill Oakes, Erin Ramsay (46 Camilla Sanderheim), Kimberly Brandao, Linnea Liljegärd

Djurgården  secured their second place and helped saving AIK's Damallsvenskan place, as they played out against Falköping, often playing directly from the defenders to the forwards. Falköping had problems defending their area and even bigger problems creating anything against Djurgården's well organized defense.

Linköping's coach Daniel Pettersson wasn't very pleased with his sides performance against Hammarby, but was happy with the win and with his new fullback Daniela di Luca. But Linköping's win was a lucky one, they were pressed by Hammarby, particulary in the first part of the match.

Neither team had much to play for, but Örebro coach Richard Holmlund said he wanted the team to make a decent end in front of their home crowd. Örebro were the better side throughout the match. Bälinge were lacking edge in their attack, which became even duller when Katri Nokso-Koivisto had to leave the field with an injured foot.

Qbik, forced to win both their two last matches to avoid relegation, took an early lead but Göteborg's Lotta Schelin quickly replied. 2-1 below towards the end of the second half, Qbik threw what they had forward, but opened themselves to Göteborg's fast counters and Schelin struck twice more. After three matches without a win, malmö finally got their game together and defeated Sunnanå in their last home game for the season. Malmö's national team players Therese Sjögran and Nilla Fischer won the midfield and Emma Stålhammar scored an early goal after a great pass from Therese Jönsson. It was a fairly enjoyable match between two good sides and there were a lot more chances than the meagre scoring line would suggest. Sunnanå's retiring coach Kenneth Isaksson commented that when he came to the clun three years ago, they were standing in their penlty-box, just kicking the ball away, in matches against the top sides. Now, they are disappointed with a single goal defeat. Still, his goalkeeper Åsa Berglund and Hanna Marklund in defense were his most important players.

Lisa Dahlqvist scored the first goal after only 14 seconds and then it just continued. Lisa Dahlqvist made a hat-trick, including what she herself calls "a Marta", a corner-kick directly into goal. Ramona scored a brace within one minute. Everyone seemed to have fun, maybe except Marta who only managed to hit the goalpost twice. On the other hand she as usually set up a couple of goals.

Damallsvenskan round 20: AIK scores and wins!

Even if Djurgården. mathematically, still can win the championship and Malmö, in theory, still can reach 2nd place, the top places are pretty much set now. And the relegation struggle is also closing in. AIK's win over Bälinge might prove to be what keeps them in the league for next season and Hammarby's somewhat surprising defeat of Sunnanå secured their Damallsvenskan reappearence 2008.

Damallsvenskan round 19: Umeå doesn't want to celebrate yet

After defeating Kopparbergs/Göteborg, Umeå has to lose both remaining league matches while Djurgården wins theirs and manages to better their goal diference with 25 goals compared to Umeå. And three 8-0 wins seems more probable than Umeå losing to AIK. But Umeå's players and management doesn't take any chances: "We will celebrate the championship at home after the match against AIK" said team captain Karolina Westberg.

Linköping opened strong and dominated the first half, partly invited by Bälinge's weak attack and bad passes to do so, scoring two goals in the first 25 minutes. Linköping had to play without Nigerians Ikidi and Mmadu, whose contracts finished before the World Cup, but at least against Bälinge that didn't seem to be a problem. Bälinge didn't give up in spite of the bad start and in the last 10 minutes of the match they incessantly challenged Linköping's goal, but only managed a consolation goal by young substitute Moa Eriksson.
Linköping's midfielder Anna-Kaisa Rantanen was due for her come-back following a long injury spell, when she stepped wrong on the warm-up and sprained her foot. She is still waiting for her first match this season. On the Bälinge side Annette Kent was missing. Since the club already has secured their Damallsvenskan contract for 2008 and don't have much option to advance, she had been offered and accepted the opportunity to end her contract and return to the USA.

Damallsvenskan round 20: Umeå closing in on championship title

Falköping has lifted themselves quite a bit since their rather dismal perfomance during the summer, with only two draws and 7-53 goaldifference over the last 15 matches. When U19 junior Linnea Liljegärd scored for Falköping already after 9 minutes, it was of course equalised by Madeleine edlund only minutes after, but a hard working Falköping kept the score even for 60 minutes, which in Falköping counts for "a great performance". But then the Marta factor kicked in. A direct free-kick and yet aother of those trade-mark Marta solo raids secured the match for Umeå. Coach Jeglertz found his team a little bit tired, owning ball but not creating enough forward.

With the 2-0 defeat of Malmö, Umeå can see forward to the final matches after the World Cup with a lot of confidence - they will need to lose points in three of the four remaining matches to miss out on the championship.
Malmö's coach Jörgen Pettersson surprised by assigning his 18 year old defender Malin Levenstad to do man-marking on Marta. And particulary in the first half she was really successful. She managed to force Marta back or playing sideways instead of moving forward as usual. Umeå, in spite of having most of the possession, didn't manage to create much, their few finishes being shots from distance. The situation was new to both sides "Nobody has ever tried this before" commented Hanna Ljungberg and asked at halftime how it was marking Marta compared to others, Malin Levenstad answered "I have no idea, I've never done this before".
But even with some success in keeping tabs on Marta, I think Malmö suffered more from their tactics than Umeå did. Playing five in defense, they lost the midfield and couldn't support their attackers. They could keep the ball in Umeå's defensive half only short periods and with their power-draining defense play it was inevitable that Umeå should come through sooner or later. And when it happened, it was of course Marta who managed to escape her marker and set up Lisa Dahlqvist (playing great in a more offensive midfield role than usual) to score the leader.
Far too late in the game Malmö begun trying to push forward, but Umeå took advantage to score another, Marta zig-zagging through together with Hanna Ljungberg. Coach Jörgen Pettersson could just sigh after the match: "We did what we could. Umeå was simply better". And I think, even if Pettersson didn't want to go there, that missing injured Frida Nordin really hurt Malmö's offensive play.
Hanna Ljungberg replaced Ramona Bachmann to play the last half hour, her first match since the fatal European qualification match with the national team match against Hungary in June. She said she was very happy to return and also looked good on the field, contributing to Umeå's late 2-0 goal, cooperating nicely with Marta. But you could notice that she avoided those 50/50 situations with the keeper, that she would have rushed into before her injuries. "I'm less stupid nowadays", she commented.

AIK's confidence must have grown quite a bit after the inspired, albeity losing, effort against Umeå in the Swedish Cup final. Linköping took a predictable lead after dominating the first half (6-1 in shots at goal), but AIK once again came out more aggressive in the second. Knowing their strength they looked for set pieces and on one of their 5 second half corners, Linda Lekander (the same fullback that set up all AIK's thre goals in the cup final) managed to bend her corner-kick directly into goal. Linköping had several more promising chances, including three short in the wood-work, but AIK managed to hold on to the precious draw.
Linköping's World Cup player Sara Larsson was back on the pitch after her injury and was pleased with how her foot felt.

A last minute goal by junior Emma Lundh (set up by Victoria Svensson, who else), only minutes after she got subbed in for Linda Forsberg, saved the day for Djurgården, keeping them in something that can be called striking distance from Umeå, at least if you're an optimistic Djurgården fan. Just like against in their match against Umeå recently, Hammarby showed their best side, hard working and organised. Young defender Anna Lindblom was successful against Djurgården's winger Elin Ekblom, moving most of Djurgården's attacking to their weaker left side.

Falköping can be hard to defeat at home, but after goals by stars Stensland and Schelin late in the first half, the match was decided. For Falköping this was still a step forward compared to the 5-1 beating in their spring meeting and late signing Jill Oakes has been a boost for their midfield. But I can still not see what could save last place Falköping from relegation.

After five goalless matches, Qbik got the longed for goal on a quick counter-attack , Rebecca Johnson heading in the return from Anna Nilsson's shot. But Örebro was stronger and Pavlina Scasna could create a goal almost on her own only five minutes later. Early in the second half Örebro exploited a misyunderstanding between Qbik's midfielders and could take the lead. Qbik tried to get an equaliser, but had problems creating scoring opportunities and Örebro, testing Qbik's keeper Maria Yatrakis sevreral times, won a deserved victory.
Örebro's Holmlund wasn't entirely pleased with what his team managed "but we won, and that's what counts" and thought Scasna ought to have scored more with the chances she got, "but Qbik had a fantastic goalkeeper". Qbik's Jansson has started counting points to escape relegation: "We need to defeat Hammarby and Falköping and take a point from either Malmö or Göteborg". A tall order.

Sunnanå showed already from srart which was the strongest side and had most of the possession while Bälinge had big problems even getting into Sunnanå's defensive half. Perpetua Nkwocha kept Bälinge's defense busy, but Sunnanå still had unexpected problems creating any real scoring chances. A hard working Bälinge managed to fend off Sunnanå until the 15 minutes from the end, when a botched attempt to clear a Perpetua Nkwocha cross ended up in an own goal. Anna Bodén and Josefin Johansson helped Sunnanå dominate the midfield while goalkeeper Maja Åström saved Bälinge from a much bigger defeat.

Damallsvenskan round 17: Örebro upsets Djurgården

Goals: 0-1 Ariane Hingst (19), 1-1 Hanna Pettersson (57), 2-1 Pavlina Scasna (78 PK)
Attendance: 1,031
Djurgården got as expected the upper hand, scoring already after 19 minutes when Sara Thunebro served Ariane Hingst a perfect pass. They continued to press against Örebro's goal, hitting the woodwork and testing World Cup squad hopeful Kristin Hammarström in Örebro's goal. But Örebro continued to work hard and Pavlina Scasna could set up Hanna Pettersson to equalise on a counter attack. A somewhat debatable penalty-kick late in the match decided the match - Stina Segerström went down in Djurgården's penalty area, but the referee couldn't find out who was to blame and no card was given.
Since Örebro last year managed to draw a top three side, one of their main goals this season was to defeat a top three side. Mission accomplished.

Yet another sleepy performance from Umeå made for an exciting finish of the match, where Hammarby played both efficient and gutsy against the champions. Umeå created most and had the most dangerous scoring opportunities, but their only goal was a gift from Hammarby's defense (a misguided back pass to the keeper, intercepted by Ramona Bachmann). Marta had less success than usual, heavily guarded by Hammarby's Anna Lindblom, while the hosts repeated long balls to Sara Johansson could have resulted. Still, a single goal win is never secure, but as a whole the somewhat lack-lustre Umeå was the better side even if Hammarby probably did one of their best matches this season, hard-working and respectless.

"The best we have played so far this season", commented a pleased Qbik manager Janne Jansson, who gave special mention to his Scotch national team player Ifeoma Dieke, this time playing in a forward position. Qbik dominated more or less the entire match, out-shooting Bälinge 6-0 in the first half and pressing Bälinge's goalkeeper Maja Åström to several good saves. Qbik's problem, and Bälinge's luck, was that in spite of 13 qualified scoring chances Qbik didn't manage to convert a single one.
Qbik work much harder then their hosts and you could see that the match much more important to the relegation candidates. Bälinge's Zaine Söderlund made several substitutions in the second half, trying to turn the game, but was very disappointed in the performance from most of his players.

In spite of his team winning 3-0 and never really being challenged by relegation candidate Falköping, Malmö's head coach Jörgen Pettersson was disappointed with the performance: "We had been talking about keeping up the pace and not allow ourselves to fall into Falköping's lower tempo". They still did and the second half was probably rather boring from a Malmö fan point of view. Goalscorer Dora Stefansdottir admitted to a local radio station that they more or less just played off the second half: "We usually have higher intensity on our trainings than we had here".
Falköping's Christer Engström was on the other hand pleased with his team: "If we can keep this up, we've got a good chance against AIK and Qbik" and said that his brand new recruits Oakes and Ramsey "contributed with positive energy".

Damallsvenskan round 16: Malmö on the roll

Umeå and Djurgården just barely salvaged their three points against midtable teams, while Malmö seems to have improved on the already great form they showed before the break. The 7-2 defeat of Göteborg obviously killed all hopes for a top three finish for Martin Pringle's team.

Djurgården - Bälinge 2 - 1 (1-0)

Djurgården's higher pace and more resolute play gave them a big advantage over a timid Bälinge. Victoria Svensson scored a great goal from distance, and there were plenty chances for a bigger lead at half-time. But after the break, Bälinge seemed to shape up while Djurgården lost in tempo. When Bälinge substitution Annette Kent equalized, assisted by Kacey White's midfield replacement 17 year old Julia Lyckberg, it looked a lot like a repeat of the 1-1 result in the last match between the teams. But close to the end Kristin Bengtsson could serve Linda Forsberg to a header, that made it 2-1.

The extremely important match for the two relegation candidates started slow and cautious, but with the ball mostly on Falköpings half. "I don't know what happened, we just seemed really tired" commented team captain Karolina Westberg after the lucky win over Örebro. The first half still worked pretty well, with Marta in great form, creating most of Umeå's attacking play, and Anna Paulsson in an unusual position as a forward. But Örebro played much more aggressive in the second half and Pavlina Scasna posed a constant threat to Umeå's defense. "Sleepwalking" and "uninspired" was the verdict from the local media over Umeå's second half. Örebro (and former Umeå) coach Richard Holmlund said that when his team play like they did in the second half, "we can defeat any team in this league".
Örebro'äs top scorer Emelia Erixon had to leave the field in the middle of the second half with a knee injury.

A 1-0 win on an own goal (a botched attempt by defender Amelie Rybäck to clear a Ann Westermark shot) over the last placed team doesn't sound much, but Linköping coach Daniel Pettersson was satisfied. His team dominated throughout the match and Hedvig Lindahl in goal was very rarely tested. The injury-ridden Linköping was hit by more bad news before the match, Sara Larsson with a foot injury and Lotta Rohlin with a fever, and had to improvise their defense line.

Attendance: 512
Sunnanå dominated AIK in the first half, winning almost all one-on-one situations, destroying any atttempts to a working passing play from the Stockholm side. Perpetua Nkwocha's constant movements in the attack gave hard work for the AIk defense and was awarded with a fine goal. Sunnanå lost some of the intensity in the second half, and AIK could create some dangerous counters, but needed a penalty kick to score. Kacey White made her first appearence in the AIK shirt after her recent shift from Bälinge and was named player of the match.

When Bälinge plays Umeå, it usually results in lots of goals for Umeå. But not this time. Bälinge followed their defensive tactics and tried to make the best use of their counters. Umeå dominated and Marta made her raids on the left side, but always got stuck in the penalty area. Finally the pressure paid off for Umeå as Elaine could score from short range after a corner-kick and then yet another Marta raid created a no-miss opportunity for Ramona Bachman to make it 0-2. Umeå lost pace a little after that, but Bälinge was in spite of their late consolation goal never close.

As so often this season, Lotta Schelin decided the match. A hard working Hammarby, fighting against relegation, took advantage of the dip Göteborg made after getting two goals up and could tie the match after goals by forwards Fors and Landström. Göteborg once again decided to change their tactics to a more offensive 4-3-3 and managed to get a late winner.

One of Falköping's two wins this season was against Örebro in April, but they never managed to challenge in the return match. A safe win for Örebro, where stand-out Pavlina Scasna finally managed to score, not just setting up goals for her team mates.

Linköping started really good with a pacy and offensive play, but Sara Thunebro scored the leader for Djurgården with what seemed like a misdirected cross and in the second half Linda Forsberg could score twice in 20 minutes to give the guests a solid lead. Just like in some earlier matches, the picture changed as Linköping subbed in Kosovare Asllani. Linköping found back to their fast and aggressive game, but too little too late.

A "bigger, stronger and better" Malmö, to quote AIK head coach Jörgen Zetterström, didn't have any problems defeating AIK. Malmö's winger Frida Nordin, who has had a great season so far, scored one, set up another and was the driving force in Malmö's attacks. AIK, again missing Kalmari who has been feeling her old inury, didn't manage to create anything to bother Malmö's Caroline Jönsson in goal.

Perpetua Nkwocha's long awaited début for Sunnanå ended with standing ovations when she left the field with only minutes left to play. Before that she had created the penalty, that Kristina Wiklund converted, set up Mirjam Marklund's 2-0 and finally scored 3-0 with a great volley shot. Four goals was probably a little too much in a match where Qbik put up a good fight, but lacked the edge Nkwocha provided for Sunnanå.

Damallsvenskan Round XIV: Djurgården stumbles

Predictably, Djurgården stumbled just when they had caught up with leaders Umeå. But Sunnanå has shown great strength this season, defeating Umeå and drawing both Malmö and Djurgården in the league and knocking out Djurgården from the Swedish Cup. Djurgården are now trailing three points and a lot of goals behind Umeå and must once again rely on other teams to take points from the ruling champions.

Little sister Marklund scored the early opener for Sunnanå with a nice finish from a Lina Johansson cross and had a great chance to get a last minute winner when she caught a stray ball and was alone with Nordby in Djurgården's goal but, as she confessed, was too tired to manage a good finish. Between that it was mostly Djurgården with numerous missed opportunities.

It started good for Göteborg, getting a good hold over the match and challenging Örebro's goal. But Örebro's dangerous striker Emelia Erixon exploited a defensive mistake to score 0-1. Göteborg started to play confused and unorganised, while Örebro were efficient and could get what seemed comfortable 3 goal lead. In the middle of the second half Örebro lost two midfielders to smaller injuries and Göteborg's coach Pringle changed to an offensive 4-3-3 and managed to turn the tide. Two goals in the last 10 minutes saved a point for the hosts.

Malmö got an early lead from a bouncing long shot, but otherwise Hammarby played a nice, fast short-passing game and stood up well against the hosting favourites. The match weasn't really decided until Malmö's coaches decided to change both their forwards after two thirds of the match. Substitute Emma Stålhammar scored twice in five minutes, once as Malmö could take advantage of Hammarby's, otherwise good, new goalkeeper Lehmann as she has followed her team very far up in the field. Stefansdottir's 4-0 goal was a roaring shot from 25 meters, that pleased the crowd greatly.

It took Umeå 70 minutes to wear down the injury-ridden Linköping side. "It was tough and even for 70 minutes", commented national team coach Thomas Dennerby, who made a guest appearance as commentator in the broadcast of the match. Damallsvenskan Round XIII: Surprise Saturday as AIK Scores, Umeå Loses

The fight for the Swedish championship tightened even more when Umeå somewhat unexpected lost away to Sunnanå, leaving Djurgården only one point away. Interesting to note is that the last time Umeå lost to their local rivals in 2003, it was the same Anna Bodén that scored the winner. The defeat ultimately cost Umeå the championship that time. In the bottom of the league, AIK finally found where the goal is and doubled their season tally in one match.

In a match bnetween two nervous teams, both starved for points, Laura Kalmari's return to AIK after her injury proved decisive. She both scored a great looking goal from distance and played a big role in AIK's attacking game. Hammarby still managed to threaten AIK all the way to the final whistle. "We're not used to being ahead, so I think we got a bit nervous in the second half", explained AIK's goalkeeper Sofia Lundgren.

Hedvig Lindahl's comeback after her ACL injury was the most rememberable from this match. Linköping dominated completely and Lindahl was never challenged in goal. Linköping coped with the absence of Josefine Öqvist by moving Sara Larsson to midfield and Mmadu to the attack, but their offense never got really working until they substituted Mmadu for teenage talent Kosovare Asllani, whose speed and ball control created a lot.

Already from start it was apparent that Sunnanå could win this. They opened high paced and had several chances to score before former Umeå player Maria Nordbrandt finally chipped the keeper. Even after Umeå had equalised twice - a Marta goal at 70 minutes usually tells the opposition that resistance is futile - Sunnanå stayed focused and midfielder Anna Bodén could (for the second time in her life) score the winner against Umeå.
Sunnanå's coach and players were understandably all smiles after the match. Umeå's coach Andrée Jeglertz on the other hand was very disappointed after the match against a Sunnanå that, he claimed, with the exception of Hanna Marklund didn't have a single player good enough to play for Umeå. He thought that a lot of the players lacked dedication and a will to win.

Bälinge had to see themselves completely outplayed by Göteborg on their own home turf. Bälinge started good and after their leader by Moa Eriksson, set up by Kacey White, Göteborg could see a repeat of the 4-0 defeat to Linköping. But after scoring three goals in 5 minutes, all with Lotta Schelin's signature to them, they owned the match. They used the wings a lot, where their fast attackers could get round Bälinge's defenders much too easy.

Örebro were much too shy against the physical and resolute Malmö team. Malmö capitalized on a much too considerate and not always organised Örebro defense and dominated the first maybe 60 minutes. After Elin Magnusson's goal Örebro started to challenge more and were not far from another goal, while Malmö seemed content to preserve their lead. Malmö's Frida Nordin was the most impressive player, strong and fast in her runs down the right wing.

In spite of missing several starters (Hingst with her national team, Dalum Jensen suspended, Lundh unwell and Bengtsson injured), Djurgården rolled over AIK in pouring rain. AIK, and mostly Sofia Lundgren, managed to fend off Djurgården the first 20 minutes. But after Victoria Svensson's 1-0 goal the floodgates opened. Djurgården's dominance were so big that they could subb in two of their development team players, Mia Jalkerud scoring her first ever Damallsvenskan goal and 16 years old Victoria Touma made her premier league debut. The only positive thing for AIK was that Laura Kalmari played 30 minutes in her first match after her injury.

Sunnanå defeated Falköping 8-0 in their first meeting, but repeating that at Falköping's home turf proved everything but easy. They did get a great start with Mirjam Marklund - doing just as well as a forward as she has been doing in defense lately - scoring after only a couple of minutes, and might have gotten the idea that this would go as easy as last time. But Falköping's Sandra Krantz got through when Hanna Marklund slipped on the wet and difficult pitch and great work from goalie Malin Andersson kept Falköping tied. Sunnanå dominated, but Falköping had dangerous counters. After a Sunnanå corner-kick Falköping could make a fast counter and Madeleine Tegström gave the home team the lead. In the middle of the second half Sunnanå subbed in the speedy midfielders Nordbrandt and Johansson, which paid off when Nordbrandt equalized. Sunnanå continued to press on for a win, but Falköping managed to hold on.

Josefine Öqvist was carried off the field with a knee injury already after 15 minutes. That was the only downside for Linköping, who played their best match so far this season. Their Nigerian defender Faith Ikidi was successful in keeping Lotta Schelin away and Göteborg didn't create many scoring opportunities. Ingvild Stensland made her come-back for Göteborg after more than two months on the injury list. She was happy to be back and coach Pringle was satisfied with her performance, she just needs more matches to be completely back to her old self.
There are yet no details about Öqvist's injury, but Linköping's assistant coach Kieback was optimistic.

Goals: 1-0 Manon Melis (68), 2-0 Manon Melis (85)
Attendance: 441
The water-drenched field in Malmö proved hard to master for both sides. It was almost impossible get a normal passing play to work, as the ball often came to an abrupt stop in a water puddle, and runs and dribble attempts often ended in the player slipping on the wet surface. Bälinge's coach Zaine Söderlund called it a parody of football, but the referee had approved the field after a substantial effort from the field manager to get excess water off the pitch. But the rain continued most of the match.
After a first half, that could have been called entertaining but not in the right way, both teams changed their approach, playing mostly high balls and avoiding short passing. It still was more fighting for the ball than playing and Malmö proved stronger here. The first goal came, predictably, from a corner-kick. Manon Melis kicked in the ball from distance, picking up a clearance from the Bälinge defense. But Bälinge worked on, Mäkinen hard working hub in the midfield and Kacey White creative in the attack, and had a couple of balls saved on the goalline. Malmö closed the match minutes from the whistle when Frida Nordin managed to run away from Bälinge's defense with the ball and set up Melis.

A predictable win for league leaders Umeå against last place Qbik. Qbik's fullbacks suffered a lot against Umeå's speedy and skilled outside forwards Marta and Ramona Bachman. Centre forward Edlund set up her teammates several times and also managed to score twice, maybe getting back to her early season form?
Malin Moström never left the bench, which probably was a good decision, since her Tuesday training session was her first ball contact since November last year. Also benched was goalie Carola Söberg, maybe the club making a point after her not entirely successful performance against Djurgården?
Qbik had to travel to Umeå without their suspended keeper Maria Yatrakis, but it really wouldn't have mattered. Coach Janne Jansson wasn't even disappointed: "We don't have the capacity to disturb a team like Umeå, they are simply too good."

Damallsvenskan Round XII: Hammarby draws Örebro

Hammarby - Kif Örebro 1 - 1 (0-0)
Hammarby: Katarina Wicksell - Annica Svensson, Elin Sölveskog, Josefin Christensen, Anna Lindblom - Malin Nykvist, Jennie Jonsson - Lousie Fors (76 Marijke Callebaut), Andrea Comaneci (39 Karolina Rinman), Therese Sandström - Josefin Weijner (46 Lisa Björkvik)

Goals: 1-0 Lisa Björkvik (56), 1-1 Elin Magnusson (75)
Attendance: 539
With Hammarby missing both Sara Johansson and Jessica Landström to minor injury problems and Örebro's goalscorer Emelia Erixon unwell, both team's attacking capability was visibly effected. Örebro's coach Rikard Holmlund, who before the match said he liked the way his team played but that they lacked aggressiveness in both the defensive and offensive penalty areas, wasn't made happier by this match. Örebro dominated the first half, Pavlina Scasna the creative force in the offensive, while Hammarby had problems adapting to the loss of their fast forwards. Hammarby made some changes in halftime, giving Malin Nykvist more a more attacking position, and were rewarded when Lisa Björkvik ran through Örebro's defense and scored 1-0. In spite of Örebro having problems and Hammarby playing increasingly better, the guests could equalise late in the match when Elin Magnusson score from a great opening pass from Scasna.

In the last match in the first half of Damallsvenskan, Örebro dominated against AIK. But AIK, with Julin and Valkonen doing particulary good, managed to keep Örebro's dangerous forwards off the scoresheet. Damallsvenskan Round XI: At last!

Would Umeå defeat Djurgården, have a 10 point lead with only half the matches played and effectively kill the league? That was the question talked about in media before this weekend. But Djurgården defeated Umeå and Victoria Svensson was very pleased "If we had lost, we would have been 10 points down and that would have been hard. Now it's only 4 and the league is alive!". Umeå's head coach Andrée Jeglertz commented surly "I guess everybody is cheering now", but didn't look like he would join in. And Umeå's goalscorer Hanna Ljungberg, looking not quite as sulky as her coach, said that she wants to win matches, all matches - "you will never get me to say that a defeat is good". SVT's controversial columnist Jonas Karlsson on the other hand claimed that the loss was good for Umeå - they probably lost thousands of spectators and SEK 1,5 millions in revenue last year because the league was decided too early.

Bonus info: Umeå's undefeated streak in Damallsvenskan became 56 matches long, starting after the 1-0 defeat to Malmö FF October 9, 2004, making it almost exactly 32 months long. They lost points only twice; a 2-2 draw at Malmö in April 2005 and a 1-1 home draw against Kopparbergs/Göteborg in May 2006. Umeå could boast 24 straight league wins before they finally lost to Djurgården. During the streak, Umeå lost 6 cup maches (Swedish and UEFA), 4 to Djurgården and one each to Linköping and Arsenal.

Falköping - Qbik 2 - 2 (2-1)

Falköping: Malin Andersson - Charlotte Abrahamsson, Karin Neuman (58 Cecilia Abrahamsson), Elin Osbeck, Emma Eriksson, Sandra Krantz (83 Rebecka Blennow), Madeleine Tegström, Josefine Alfsson, Camilla Sanderheim (76 Therese Larsson), Sofia Fröjdstedt, Linnea Liljegärd

Goals: 1-0 Sandra Krantz (4), 2-0 Linnea Liljegärd (33), 2-1 Jennifer Meier (35), 2-2 Amelie Rybäck (60)
Attendance: 579
Falköping, strong at home, opened optimistic and Sandra Krantz gets her team the lead after only minutes. The match could have been decided after Linnea Liljegärd?s 2-0, but Qbik?s German striker Jennifer Meier exploited a defensive mistake to make it 2-1. After Amelie Rybäck?s equalizer in the second half, both teams seemed content with the result.

Goals: 1-0 Jessica Landström (6), 1-1 Katri Nokso-Koivisto (23), 1-2 Moa Eriksson (74)
Attendance: 417
A pretty tight match, where the teams compensated for lack of quality with hard work. With Bälinge looking not at all as good as in the win over Örebro last match, they were lucky to get away with a win. Hammarby got an early lead as Jessica Landström took advantage of a miscalculated rush from Bälinge?s keeper. In one of Bälinge?s few first half scoring opportunities, winger Katri Nokso-Koivisto scored from close range after a missed attempt from Sanna Talonen. Hammarby had a lot of possession, but lacked the necessary edge finishing. Moa Eriksson pushed in the winner for Bälinge, where Hammarby wanted a free-kick for an attack on the goalkeeper.

Attendance: 810
An undisputed win for the Malmö side, where Therese Sjögran and Nilla Fischer, both in really great form, owned the midfield. Manon Melis made the goal of the match when she dribbled past two Linköping defenders on the left side and scored from an almost impossibly narrow angle. The post-match comments was just as much about Djurgården?s win over Umeå, which Malmö considered a win for them too, as about the match that was played.

Attendance: 542
Göteborg, eager to better themselves after the disappointing draw against Qbik, scored the only goal in the match, when Sara Lindén picked up a missed clearance after a corner-kick. The rest of the match the guests had a pretty hard time against a home-strong Sunnanå. The backline with the Marklund sisters made a good job keeping Lotta Schelin off the scoresheet and they were aggressive in midfield, but had problems getting their play to work in the offensive third of the field.

Goals: 1-0 Hanna Ljungberg (13), 1-1 Linda Forsberg (32), 1-2 Victoria Svensson (35)
Attendance: 3,828
It started good for Umeå, with a Hanna Ljungberg goal after only 11 minutes, but Djurgården played determined and disciplined. Their usual recipe for an Umeå match - play close, play hard and pressure high in the field - worked out as intended this time. Linda Forsberg equalised after 32 minutes as a botched clearance from Umeå?s keeper Carola Söberg found it?s way to her feet and Victoria Svensson worked herself to a great goal only minutes later, getting past Umeå?s left side defense. As Umeå tried to come back in the second half, Djurgården seemed to play harder, not the least against Marta, and there were a couple of yellow cards.
There were two early casualties in the match. Djurgården?s Kicki Bengtsson left already after 13 minutes feeling an old injury (?We knew it was a risk to let her start?, said coach Benny Persson) and Umeå?s defender Johanna Frisk was carried off with a torn knee ligament after 23 minutes. Umeå?s defense seemed to have some problems getting organised after that.

Attendance: 951
"What is happening?", Caroline Seger asked teammate Maria Karlsson, as she had scored Linköping's third goal less than 10 minutes into the game. Linköping finally taking off might be the answer, as they seemed to be able to score at will in the first half against a chocked Hammarby, capitalizing on a error-prone defense. Their superiority in the match was so great that coach Daniel Pettersson decided to rest Öqvist and Mmadu already at the break, probably to keep them fresh for the harder match against Malmö this weekend. Seger had to leave the field 15 minutes into the second half after knocking in to Hammarby's goalie, but she declared after the match that she was all right. In spite of already having lost the match, Hammarby managed to get their game together in the second half and Sara Johansson could score a consolation goal.

Attendance: 1,517
AIK had decided to play tight in defense and not let any Umeå players through. That hold for about 40 seconds, then Marta scored. But after that AIK managed to keep it up the rest of the first half. Their hard work in defense hurt their attack, which became almost non-existent, and tired the team. AIK lost some of their concentration and Marta slipped through more and more often, scoring on a great pass from Madeleine Edlund and on a one-on-one situation with AIK's goalie Sofia Lundgren, where Lundgren saved Marta's two first tries, but had to let in the third. Lundgren's pregame analysis that Umeå's play revolves a lot around Marta was all in all substantiated by the events. Marta has now 14 goals this season, 8 of them scored in the last three matches.

Kacey White's return couldn't have been better. In a much more even match then the scoreline would suggest, White made the difference. In her attacking midfielder position just behind the attackers she attracted interest from the Örebro defense and created space for both Mäkinen behind her and the attackers. Her first goal was 25 meter shot and the both others from close range following corner-shots. Örebro were by no means harmless with Keeley Dowling, Emelia Erixon and Pavlina Scasna up front in a 4-3-3 formation, but after Lindqvist's 3-1 they were pretty much defeated.

Falköping started optimistic and their forward duo Krantz and Uwak managed to create some situations in the beginning before Djurgården's defense had read them. Djurgården had a better pace in their play than against Göteborg and managed to open up Falköping's defense at several occasions. But it took until the second half before Djurgården's offense, mostly crosses from the wings to Victoria Svensson in the box, began to pay off.

Jennifer Meier scored the important equaliser, but the key player for Qbik was back-up goalie My Axelsson, making her Damallsvenskan debut with Maria Yatrakis serving suspension. She managed three saves in front of Lotta Schelin, who didn?t at all live up to her recent form. Qbik played well both in defense and attack and actually managed to pressure Göteborg in the second half. The draw was not unearned and Göteborg visibly missed sick Salina Olsson in midfield.

After an even first half, Malmö took over completely in the second half. Nilla Fischer and Dora Stefansdottir dominated in the midfield and Malmö got loads of shots at goal, where Sunnanå was saved by great cooperation between the Marklund sisters as centre backs, good goalkeeping, the woodwork and Malmö?s lack of real edge in their finishes.
