WPS club gives up Stensland and Schelin, shows interest in Sara Larsson

The American WPS club St. Louis has retracted from their earlier interest in Swedish star Lotta Schelin, presently at Lyon, as well as Kopparbergs/Göteborg's Norwegian midfielder Ingvild Stensland. In Schelin's case it makes sense, as she is tied to Lyon until summer 2010, but Stensland has publicly shown interest in going to USA. No explanation is given by St. Louis.
Instead, the Mid Western club has claimed the WPS signing rights for Linköping's Sara Larsson. Larsson, Swedish national team defender with 82 caps and 7 goals, is one of the Linköping players that still hasn't renewed her contract.
No further details, but interesting.

EDIT: Sara Larsson tells Damfotboll.com that she is talking to both St. Louis and Linköping. She is tempted by the adventure it will be playing abroad, but a bit worried how playing in USA will effect her position on the national team.

The odd thing about Stensland is that she'd been contacted by both NY/NJ and Boston prior to being 'drafted' by St. Louis. IIRC, she told them she wasn't interested and was worried about how playing in the league would affect her national team commitment.

When her name came up with St. Louis, she was slightly confused by this, seeing as how she'd told the other teams no. She also didn't seem to jump at the chance to play in the WPS, but changed her tune a few weeks later.

I would assume her waffling on the issue may be due to a less than ideal contract offer from Goteborg. But now that the WPS has moved on, where will Stensland play next year? If Goteborg has re-signed her, surely they would have mentioned it by now?

She also mentioned that other European clubs were looking at her, so maybe she'll jump leagues?

This whole thing is getting to be a drag.

It was already depressing that America has a new league that no one from Europe really wants to play in, except maybe 1 or 2 players whose arms are being twisted. But now it's getting annoying.

The damallsv. players always answer something like: "maybe/who knows/I don't understand the US league/if it doesn't interfere with my kitchen renovation this summer/depends on if Knackeborg makes me a better offer".

And I am sick of this Marta bidding war. She wanted in the WPS, and now she wants to stay in Umea; she demands that her "friend" to come with her to LA, now she demands to stay in Sweden... this just in, the Sol has put Marta on plane to LAX! Hang on - Marta said she loves Sweden and will die for her snowy step-motherland! WAIT! Newsflash! Marta just signed on WPS dotted line--STOP PRESS! --she nailed herself to Umea's town hall. No! OH MY GOD, Marta is DUE TO ARRIVE NEXT WEEK as long as she gets two million, 10 jet skis, two turtledoves, a beach house and unlimited supersize refills!

Stop groveling, WPS!

MARTA, we do not want you here unless CAROLINE JONSSON agrees to provide UNLIMITED psychotherapy for your anger management problems.

INGVILD, we demand that if you come here, you must promise that Norway WILL NEVER close their Minnesota consulate, SO HELP YOU GOD. Need I remind you that Starbuck, Minnesota made history in 1983 by cooking the world’s biggest LEFSE (Norwegian flatbread)? They mean business!

LOTTA Schelin, you may NOT join the WPS until WE are good and ready to finish sulking. And we MEAN IT this time.

Sara Larsson: America gave you those iPODs, and we CAN TAKE THEM AWAY.

I think I made my point.

:applauds:

Groveling is a good word to use. They've set themselves up for a world of disappointment by having that stupid non-draft.

In other news, Stensland is having talks with Olympique-Lyonnais, but a little birdie told me this is unlikely to happen.

papyrus: haha! very nice.

r.e. Stensland to OL... why not? It's better for her to be there than K/Göteborg (forgive me).

I want to talk about Linköpings. It won the Cupen this year ant faced Umea all year with brazilians help Daniela and Christiane. Now contracted a Iceland girl?? What they want? in "iceland soccer" is nothing if compares with Brazilian girls. If she plays and turn one goal is a victory.

Papyrus: Couldn't agree with you more. Your comments on Martha are so spot on. Wish the media could see that as well instead of hailing her into something she is not. She may be great with a football but her temper and all around bad attitude makes her less than a great player
