Super Cup: Umeå prevails

Linköping FC - Umeå IK 1 - 3 (1-0)
Linköping: Maria Cederholm - Marie-Louise Skålberg, Sara Larsson (45 Maria Lindström), Frida Östberg, Maria Karlsson - Perta Larsson, Caroline Seger (68 Kosovare Asllani), Maja Krantz (62 Tiffeny Milbrett) - Ann Westermark, Maria Aronsson, Josefine Öqvist
Umeå: Carola Söberg - Anna Paulson, Karolina Westberg, Johanna Frisk (45 Emma Berglund), Maria Bergkvist - Lisa Dahlqvist, Elaine, Lise Klaveness, Marta - Madelaine Edlund, Erika Karlsson (45 Ma Xiaoxu).
Goals: 1-0 Maria Aronsson (16), 1-1 Karolina Westberg (51), 1-2 Madeleine Edlund (69), 1-3 Madeleine Edlund (83)
Attendance: 573
Umeå coach André Jeglertz was not happy with his team at haf time: "We were playing like a girls team". And Linköping had been having the initiative in the first half, repeatedly finding their way through Umeå's defense. And they could have been a couple of more goals up; a shot in the woodwork by young debutant Maja Krantz and Josefine Öqvist narrowly missing after making her way through a permissive Umeå defense. But things changed in the second half. Umeå did two half time replacements (a seldom seen sight with Umeå), letting Ma Xiaoxu on for her first real match. Her entry and probably something Jeglertz said in the lockerroom changed the picture. There was a general shake-up on the Umeå side and when team captain Karolina Westberg scored off a Marta corner-kick (I think she has scored on a penalty kick before, but still a rare thing), Umeå's confinence grew and Linköping's began to falter. Madeleine Edlund looked really good, scoring first set up by Ma and then by Marta (a great looking volley-shot). Linköping seemed to lose the will already after Umeå made it 1-2 and captain Frida Östberg commented that they really had to find out why the team lose their spirit like that. Jeglert was more satisfied, but still worried about the performance: "We can't afford to be this uneven, we must be able to keep a high level through-out the entire match."

Linköping's midfielder Caroline Seger had to limp off the field after a crash with Umeå's Elaine, to much worry among the teammates and coaches. The club has already lost two key players to knee injuries (Lindahl and Rantanen). But the answer after a MRI examination was calming: no inner damage to the knee and after a few days of rest Seger should be fit again.

Team Strømmen - QBIK 5-2 (5-1)
Goals: Anna Nilsson, Jennifer Meier
Qbik crashed completely the last 10 minutes of the first half, letting Norwegian top side Team Strømmen go from 2-1 to 5-1. Better performance in the 2nd half, maybe somewhat due to a more complacent Norwegian performance, 4 goals up as they were.

Hammarby - Bälinge 4 - 1 (1-1)
Hammarby: Katarina Wicksell - Annica Svensson, Karolina Rinman, Josefin Christensen, Anna Lindblom - Malin Nykvist, Jennie Jonsson - Therese Sandström, Lollo Fors (Jessica Landström), Marijke Callebaut (Lisa Björkvik) - Sara Johansson
Bälinge: Maja Åström - Linda Blom (70 Linn Fors), Lina Andersson, Linda Sembrant, Nina Engström - Lisa Lantz (45 Julia Lyckberg), Heidi Matinlassi (65 Emilia Appelqvist), Mikaela Björklund, Karolina Mats - Annette Kent (65 Emma Lindqvist), Katri Nokso-Koiviso
Goals: 0-1 Mikaela Björklund, 1-1 Malin Nykvist, 2-1 Sara Johansson, 3-1 Jennie Jonsson, 4-1 Jessica Landström
Hammarby is still undefeated this preseason, but had a hard time getting a real hold on the match in the first half. A strong Bälinge preassured and destroyed Hammarby's attempts to an organized play. In the second half it seems like Bälinge lost steam and Hammarby could take control.

KIF Örebro - Linköpings FC 1 - 1 (0-0)
Linköping: Jenny Olsson (46 Maria Cederholm) - Marie-Louise Skålberg, Frida Östberg, Charlotte Rohlin, Maria Karlsson - Anna-Kaisa Rantanen (30 Maja Krantz), Caroline Seger, Petra Larsson (60 Maria Lindström) - Ann Westermark (60 Kosovare Asllani), Maria Aronsson, Josefine Öqvist
Goals: 0-1 Caroline Seger (57), 1-1 Emelia Erixon (61)
Linköping, with several players still somewhat hampered by their tough Algarve Cup schedule, dominated but lacked the necessary edge. Örebro came to match without Stina Segerström (resting a sore thigh) and Pavlina Scasna (fever), but the new 19 year old striker Hanna Pettersson continued to impress. Linköping also lost some momentum when Finnish midfielder Anna-Kaisa Rantanen had to leave already after 30 minutes with a knee injury.

Malmö FF Dam - Stattena 1 - 0 (1-0)
Malmö: Caroline Jönsson - Therese Jönsson, Lina Rehov, Emma Wilhelmsson, Jenny Engwall (55 Nera Smajic) - Frida Nordin (75 Emelie Erlandsson), Lina Nilsson, Nanna Johansen, Emma Stålhammar - Manon Melis, Louise Östman (70 Antonia Göransson)
Goals: 1-0 Louise Östman (15)
Several Algarve Cup players rested and gave place for the back-ups to take a shot at a position as starters. But they mainly disappointed in a pale effort against the 1st division team Stattena.

Kopparbergs/Göteborg - Jitex 3 - 0 (0-0)
Göteborg: Maria Edman (46 Sandra Bjurteg) - Elin Dal-Örn (46 Marlene Sjöberg), Sofia Karlsson, Maria Nilsson, Maria Karlsson - Sofie Andersson, Lisa Ek (46 Salina Olsson), Anna Andén (46 Ingvild Stensland), Emmelie Farfa - Frida Svensson (65 Catrin Johansson), Sara Lindén
Goals: 1-0 (51) Salina Olsson, 2-0 (59) Sofie Andersson, 3-0 (78) Sara Lindén.
Ex-Damallsvenskan Jitex had so far made a great preseason, defeating several Damallsvenskan teams, and started well against Göteborg. But when Göteborg subbed in their Algarve Cup veterans after the half time break, Jitex couldn't keep up.

Bälinge IF - Danmarks IF 3 - 0 (2-0)
Bälinge: Maja Åström - Lisa Lantz, Lina Andersson, Heidi Matinlassi, Nina Engström (Ida Norström) - Linda Blom (Mikaela Bengtsson), Linda Sembrant, Anne Mäkinen, Karolina Mats - Emma Lindqvist (Jenny Jansson), Annette Kent (Moa Eriksson)
Goals: 1-0 Linda Blom, 2-0 Annette Kent, 3-0
Anne Mäkinen made her first appearence for her new team in a friendly against local 1st division side Danmarks IF and showed that in spite of hardly having touched a ball in four months, she will be of immense importance to the team. Also making a comeback after an even longer abscense from top football was Annette Kent, top goalscorer for Bälinge the 2005 season.

Kif Örebro - Qbik 4 - 0 (1-0)
Örebro: Kristin Hammarström ? Marina Pettersson, Sandra Linder, Malin Nilsson, Ingrid Ericson (Emelie Brodin) ? Rebecca Moros, Lena Andersson, Marie Hammarström, Hodan Siid Ahmed (Emelia Erixon) ? Elin Magnusson, Hanna Pettersson.
Qbik: My Axelsson - Emilia Eriksson, Jenny Hallstenson, Ann-Sofie Halvarsson, Charlotte Nygren - Sanna Backman, Anna Nilsson, Therese Björk, Malin Barrulf - Therese Lückner, Jennifer Meier
Goals: 1-0 Hanna Pettersson, 2-0 Elin Magnusson, 3-0 Elin Magnusson, 4-0 Emelia Erixon
Qbik managed to keep up with Örebro most of the first half, but fell through in the second. Örebro, missing Dowling, Segerström and Scasna, showed higher speed, better passing and more determination in the attacks. Hanna Pettersson continued to score and American trialist Rebecca Moros (Duke university, Long Island Fury) made an exciting performance.

Training matches: Lindén scores 5

Kopparbergs/Göteborg - Dalsjöfors 5 - 2 (2-0)
Göteborg (starters): Maria Edman - Maria Karlsson, Maria Nilsson, Sofia Karlsson, Elin Dahl-Örn - Emmelie Farfa, Lisa Ek, Anna Andén, Sofie Andersson - Sara Lindén, Frida Svensson
Goals: 1-0 Sara Lindén (28), 2-0 Sara Lindén (35), 3-2 Sara Lindén (62), 4-2 Sara Lindén (83), 5-2 Sara Lindén (90)
Göteborg's striker Sara Lindén scored 5 against her old team Dalsjöfors (1st division) in a match that was much harder for Göteborg than the figures would imply. Coach Pringle, who was without four of his most important players (Lotta Schelin, Salina Olsson, Marlene Sjöberg and Ingvild Stensland, all in Algarve), has big expectations for his new striker. She joined the team already last year, but has now got used to the premier league pace and should be able to take the next step.

Goals: 1-0 Maria Nordbrant, 2-1 Lina Johansson
Four players (Hanna Marklund and 3 U19 players) away on national team assignments, but Sunnanå was still strong enough to defeat 1st division top side Umeå Södra. Good performances from Maria Nordbrant, who scored one and set up the other, and Anna Bodén.
Damfotboll.com: Sunnanå - Umeå Södra 2-1

Malmö FF - Husie 3 - 0
Malmö: Helena Ivarsson (82 Linnéa Söderström) - Jenny Engwall, Malin Levenstad, Emma Wilhelmsson, Nera Smajic - Emelie Ölander (55 Therese Frostander), Therese Jönsson, Lina Nilsson, Emma Stålhammar - Manon Melis, Louise Östman
Goals: 1-0 Emma Stålhammar (70), 2-0 Therese Jönsson (75), 3-0 Therese Jönsson (85)
The remnants of Malmö, reinforced by players from their farm team, played well in spite of having 7 players in Algarve. Husie fought back well in the defense, but didn't manage much in the attack. Still, it took time for a makeshift Malmö team to wear the 1st division side down and score the goals. Midfielder Lina Nilsson and Dutch forward Manon Melis were singled out by their coach Jörgen Pettersson.

Training matches: "Mediocre" Umeå defeats Sunnanå

Sunnanå SK - Umeå IK 0 -3 (0-1)
Sunnanå:
Umeå: Ulla-Karin Rönnlund - Emma Berglund, Johanna Frisk, Anna Paulsson, Maria Bergkvist - Ramona Bachman, Lisa Dahlqvist (55 Emelie Konradsson), Lise Klaveness, Elaine (46 Erika Karlsson) - Marta, Madeleine Edlund
Goals: 0?1 Madelaine Edlund (30), 0?2 Marta (54), 0?3 Ramona Bachman (63).
Umeå's coach Jeglertz called his team's performance "mediocre", playing still-standing and owning the ball without creating very much. Defense worked well, though, and Anna Paulsson was yet again the best Umeå had to offer. But since Sunnanå, according to their coach Kega Israelsson, played "passive" and with a huge percentage missed passes in midfield, Umeå took an easy win.

Malmö FF - BK Skjold 2 - 0 (1-0)
Malmö: Caroline Jönsson - Therese Jönsson, Dóra Stefánsdóttir, Emma Wilhelmsson, Nera Smajic - Nanna Johansen (46 Emma Stålhammar), Nilla Fischer, Therese Sjögran, Frida Nordin - Manon Melis (65 Louise Östman), Therese Lundin
Goals: 1-0 Nanna Johansen, 2-0 Therese Lundin
Malmö, just back from a refreshing training camp on the Spanish south coast, had no problems defeating Danish premier division side Skjold. The Danish team concentrated on defending and made things a bit difficult for Malmö, that could have been more patient in their attacks. Malmö's defense contained Skjold's few attacks and Caroline Jönsson in goal didn't get a single shot. Dutch striker Melis set up both goals.

Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC - Kif Örebro 1 - 3 (0-2)
Göteborg: Maria Edman - Maria Karlsson, Maria Nilsson, Marlene Sjöberg, Catrin Johansson (60 Lisa Ek) - Emmelie Farfa, Sofia Karlsson, Salina Olsson, Sofie Andersson - Sara Lindén, Lotta Schelin
Örebro: Kristin Hammarström ? Marina Pettersson, Stina Segerström (Emelie Brodin), Malin Nilsson, Ingrid Ericson ? Emelia Erixon (Qarolina Nähl), Lena Andersson, Marie Hammarström, Elin Magnusson (Moa Åkesson) ? Hodan Siid Ahmed (Linda Höglund), Hanna Pettersson.
Goals: 0-1 Hanna Pettersson (3), 0-2 Malin Nilsson (37), 1-2 Emmelie Farfa (56), 1-3 Lena Andersson (69)
What seemed to be a rather unfocused Göteborg was chocked by Örebro's start and coach Pringle decided to change formation already after 15 minutes, from their experimental 3-5-2 to a more defensive 4-4-2. It still didn't help much against Pia Sundhage's players, that used fast counters and a defense that managed to keep Lotta Schelin from scoring.

Goals: 1-0 Maria Aronsson (42), 2-0 Josefine Öqvist (68), 3-0 Anna-Kaisa Rantanen (89)
A big improvement from the draw against Hammarby, concluded Linköping's coach Danierl Petterson and 3 goals could have been more. Bälinge, playing without Anne Mäkinen, didn't manage to threaten Linköping's new goalkeepers Maria Cederholm and Jenny Olsson, who played a half each.

Djurgården - China 2 - 0 (1-0)
Djurgården: Bente Nordby (76 Sofia Åhman) - Dorte Dalum Jensen, Jane Törnqvist, Therese Brogårde, Sara Thunebro (46 Malin Engdahl) - Kristin Bengtsson, Anna Hall, Linda Forsberg, Elin Ekblom (46 Annemarie Norlin) - Emma Lundh (63 Anna Lagerberth), Victoria Svensson (76 Mia Jalkerud).
Goals: 1-0 Emma Lundh, 2-0 Victoria Svensson
Damfotboll.com reports that Djurgården won their training match in Algarve against China Friday evening. The first goal by Emma Lundh from close range and the other from a long-shot by Victoria Svensson. Djurgården's sport director Mikael Söderman thought his team had a good grip over the match, particulary in the second half and was very pleased with the defense, where Jane Törnqvist and Therese Brogårde was almost impenetrable in the centre and Sara Thunebro and Dorte Dalum Jensen took good care of the outside.

Jitex - Falköping  4 - 1 (1-1)
Goals: 0-1 Linnea Liljegärd
Former Damallsvenskan side Jitex dominated the encounter, except for the first 10 minutes when a somewhat sloppy defending gave Falköping the lead. Falköping had big problems, especially in the second half, when they only managed to create one single scoring opportunity.

Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC - Qbik 6 - 1 (3-0)
Göteborg: Sandra Bjurteg - Maria Karlsson, Sofia Dammström, Sofia Karlsson - Catrin Johansson (60 Julia Larsson), Emmelie Farfa, Salina Olsson, Ingvild Stensland, Anna Andén - Sofie Andersson, Sara Lindén
Qbik:

In spite of usual starters Lotta Schelin and Marlene Sjöberg staying home with colds, Göteborg played out Qbik, that couldn't keep up with the pace. Göteborg tried out an offensive 3-5-2 formation and gave youngsters like back-up goalie Sandra Bjurteg and on the outfield Catrine Johansson, Anna Andén and Julia Larsson a chance to prove themselves. Göteborg coach Martin Pringle was pleased with what he saw and says the team only needs an experienced centre defender to be complete. Qbik's assistant coach thought his team made it a little bit too easy for the opposition, but "we met a better team".

AIK - Djurgården/Älvsjö  1 - 6 (0-3)
AIK: Sofia Lundgren - Madelene Göras (70 Anna Karlsson), Sanna Valkonen, Frida Höglund, Madeleine Wedin (75 Hanna Jöhnk) - Lina Hedkvist (75 Anna Bohlin), Jessica Julin, Laura Kalmari, Danielle Wallander - Freja Egebrant (75 Anna Lundin), Sofia Simonsson

After playing three matches against minnows, AIK faced their first real test in a friendly derby against Djurgården. Djurgården were better on every position and out-played AIK in the first half. In the second AIK started better and even managed to produce a couple of good situations on front of goal, including Hanna Jöhnk's goal on a Valkonen free-kick. Djurgården, that throughout the game played fast and aggressive football, finished off the match with a 5 minute 3 goal explosion. AIK's captain Jessica Julin was disappointed "too much girlie football" and national team coach Thomas Dennerby, who watched the game, expressed about the same thing when he said that AIK seemed to have a little-sister complex towards Djurgården.
Sanna Valkonen got hurt early in the match, but decided to keep on playing with what was later discovered to be a broken toe. The injury will probably keep her from any football for a month.

Goals: 1-0 Marijke Callebaut (7), 1-1 Anna-Kaisa Rantanen (14)
Both teams declared themselves satisfied with the match, characterized by good attacking play from both sides. Hammarby's Sara Johansson made her first appearence for the season after a few months on the injury list and Linköping tested both their new goal-keepers.

Umeå:  Carola Söberg (46 Ulla-Karin Rönnlund) - Emma Berglund, Johanna Frisk, Anna Paulsson, Karolina Westberg (20 Maja Johansson) - Lisa Dahlqvist, Emelie Konradsson (46 Elaine), Lise Klaveness, June Pedersen (46 Maria Bergkvist) - Erika Karlsson, Madeleine Edlund
Umeå's first match in Trondheim was played on the evening after a 10 hour overland trip. They still started good, but when Westberg had to step off with a sprained foot already after 20 minutes, the Norwegians took over and were maybe the ones closest to a victory. Coach Jeglertz was satisfied with the defense, but the offense lacked both deep and width. Several players made their first match for Umeå, which might explain some nervousness. Marta rested with a sore thigh, everybody else got time on the field.

Trondheim Ørn - Umeå IK 1 - 3 (0-2)
Umeå: Carola Söberg - Emma Berglund, Johanna Frisk, Anna Paulsson, Maria Bergkvist (60 June Pedersen) - Lisa Dahlqvist, Elaine, Lise Klaveness, Marta - Erika Karlsson (Emelie Konradsson), Madeleine Edlund (75 Maja Johansson)
Goals:  0-1 Madeleine Edlund (20), 0-2 Erika Karlsson (30), 1-2 Ann Iren Mørkved (52 PK), 1-3 Marta (73)
In the second match against the Norwegian top side, the Umeå players were eager to go home with a win. A better attacking play with the outside defenders joining in and contributing with the width in the attacks. Erika Karlsson and Madeleine Edlund also cooperated better than the match before. The big difference was of course the precense of Marta, here as an attacking midfielder. Jeglertz once again satisfied with the defence and pointing out that the attack will be even better when Hanna Ljungberg, Ramona Bachman and Ma Xiaoxu joins in.

Kopparbergs/Göteborg - Stattena 4 - 1 (1-1)
Göteborg: Maria Edman - Maria Karlsson, Maria Nilsson, Sofia Karlsson, Marlene Sjöberg - Emmelie Farfa, Ingvild Stensland, Anna Andén, Frida Svensson - Sara Lindén, Sofie Andersson
Goals: 1-0 Sara Lindén (29), 2-1 Sofie Andersson (55), 3-1 Sara Lindén (73), 4-1 Cathrine Johansson
Kopparbergs/Göteborg played their first training match this season on their home (artificial) turf against 1st disision Stattena. Lotta Schelin and Salina Olsson was missing (on Cyprus with Sweden), but Ingvild Stensland (almost directly from Norway's Cyprus camp), played her first for the club. As a central midfielder (her preferred position - one of the reasons for her leaving Kolbotn was that she often had to play defense there) she impressed without really shining. But coach Martin Pringle was more than satisfied "She has been better than expected".
In Schelin's absence last season newcomer Sara Lindén could shine: she both scored and assisted and, as she herself pointed out, could have scored a couple of more. The last goal was scored be the only 15 years old sub Cathrine Johansson, usually playing for minor league Ytterby, but maybe something for Damallsvenskan already this year?

Goals: 1-0 Freja Egebrant (11), 2-0 Lina Hedqvist (39)
AIk played their third training match in a week and this time against an established 1st division club, Sundsvalls DFF. Coach Jörgen Zetterström was this time pleased with his team and the figures could have been greater. Laura Kalmari once again played midfield and was behind both AIK's goals.

With four starters missing (Stina Segerström and Caroline Näfver with Sweden at Cyprus, Keeley Dowling and Pavlina Scasna not joined the team yet), a lot of untried players got the chance. Örebro maybe had some problems changing from the small areas in the indoor game, but Jitex was also tougher and more motivated.

Malmö: Stephanie Öhrström - Emelie Ölander, Malin Levenstad, Emma Wilhelmsson, Nera Smajic - Lina Nilsson (60 Emma Herbring), Dóra Stefánsdóttir (65 Lina Rehov), Therese Jönsson, Nanna Johansen - Emma Stålhammar (70 Cecilia Kotte), Ásthildur Helgadóttir (46 Louise Östman)
With half the Malmö starters on national team assignments (besides Caroline Jönsson, Nilla Fischer, Therese Sjögran, Frida Nordin and Therese Lundin on Cyprus, Manon Melis is with the Dutch national team, preparing for a friendly against Italy) a full force Brøndby was to strong. But, as coach Petersson noted, it is good that national team players are gonme and other players have to step up. All Malmö players that were fit also got time on the field. Noteable appearences from "guests" Asthildur Helgadottir (you could notice that she is a long way from match fit) and Emma Nerbring (still a Jitex player, but has permision to train and play training matches with Malmö FF).

Goals: Lollo Fors 3, Marijke Callebaut 3, Elin Sölveskog, Therese Sandström, Jessica Landström, Jennie Jonsson
Hammarby continues to try out their 4-2-3-1 formation and it seems to work. The difference between Swedish and Finnish top leagues is big, but usually not this big. Assistant coach Daniel Kalles-Pettersson was especially satisfied with the dedication of the team, even towards the end of the match, when the lead was huge.

Training matches: AIK draws Tyresö

Yes, I know, you have never heard of Tyresö. Neither have I, at least not in women's football (but I have an uncle who used to own a summer house there). But it turns out they won their regional 3rd division last season and will play the 2nd (one of the six regional divisions) this season. In other words, they have just qualified in among the top 100 women's football teams in Sweden.

Tyrseö FF - AIK 2 - 2 (2-1)
AIK: Jenny Lundqvist - Madeleine Wedin, Sanna Valkonen, Frida Höglund, Camilla Ulander Nilsson - Madelene Göras, Lina Hedkvist, Jessica Julin, Anna Thörnvall (60 Ulrika Hultman) - Freja Egebrant, Sofia Simonsson
Goals: 1-1 Jessica Julin (7), 2-2 Sanna Valkonen (57)
Ok, with 10 players on the injury list or otherwise unavailable, AIK had to call in a junior (Thörnvall) and an already retired player (Hultman) to get a full team. Still, there were plenty of experience in the team that went to Tyresö Tuesday evening. Tyresö was mostly on the defense, but their counters could be dangerous, as their first minute goal showed. Jessica Julin could equalise within short and then AIK gave Tyresö the lead again with a missed clearing attempt following a Tyresö corner kick. Sanna Valkonen saved AIK from a very embarrasing defeat as she headed in the tieing goal from a Lina Hedkvist free kick.
AIK is in the middle of a heavy training period with emphasis on strength and condition and it showed in their ball handling, where there were a lot of mistakes.

Kif Örebro wins Futsal Championship

Kif Örebro defeated Damallsvenskan newcomers Falköpings KIK 7-3 in the Swedish Futsal Championships to win their third straight indoor gold. Goals by Marie Hammarström (3), Lena Andersson, Hodan Siid-Ahmed and Emelia Erixon (2), but most important was probably goalkeeper Kristin Hammarström, with her fast and attacking play beside her traditional good goalkeeping. Sandra Krantz (2) and Linnea Liljegärd scored for Falköping.
Most Damallsvenskan sides doesn't compete in the futsal tournament, since in interfers with their preseason build-up, but Örebro coach Pia Sundhage finds room to do both. She has earlier stated that some aspects of futsal, the speed and the technical demands on the players, are good for their outdoor game. And it is also important to learn to win.

Training matches: Hammarby defeats Djurgården

The teams are slowly getting out on the big fields for their first preseason matches.  Malmö FF's early February première was this wekend followed by the Stockholm sides AIK, Djurgården/Älvsjö and Hammarby and in the far north Sunnanå found their way to the indoor but full size pitch at Arcushallen. Some comforting and some slightly worrying results for the clubs, but this is still early days.

AIK - Gamla Upsala SK  4 - 0 (0-0)
AIK: Jenny Lundqvist - Anna Karlsson (34 Jessica Julin), Madeleine Wedin, Camilla Ulander Nilsson, Hanna Jöhnk - Lina Hedkvist, Laura Kalmari, Sanna Valkonen, Anna Törnvall - Freja Egebrant, Sofia Simonsson
Goals: 1-0 Lina Hedkvist (52), 2-0 Camilla Ulander Nilsson (58), 3-0 Freja Egebrant (76), 4-0 Lina Hedkvist (79)
Gamla Upsala SK, or Gusk as they are usually known as, is a 2nd division club that finished last season winning promotion to the 1st. This is still a side that even last years, unloaded version of AIK should have had no problems with. A bit worrying then, that the re-loaded AIK was held goalless for the entire first half. There were more luck in front of goal in the second half with Laura Kalmari (curiously put in the midfield) setting up two of the goals and it ended in a comfortable win. Sofia Lundgren was called up for the Swedish national team, but otherwise all AIK's high profile signings participated.

Malmö FF - Östers IF 7 - 2 (5-2)
Malmö: Stéphanie Öhrström - Therese Jönsson (Jenny Engwall), Malin Levenstad (Lina Rehov), Emma Wilhelmsson, Nera Smajic (Emelie Ölander) - Frida Nordin (Emma Stålhammar), Nilla Fischer (Cecilia Kotte), Therese Sjögran (Dóra Stefánsdóttir), Nanna Johansen - Therese Lundin (Louise Östman), Manon Melis
Goals: 1-0 Nanna Johansen (15), 2-2 Manon Melis (22), 3-2 Therese Lundin (28), 4-2 Frida Nordin (37), 5-2 Manon Melis (39), 6-2 Louise Östman (51), 7-2 Louise Östman (67)
After a chaotic start for Malmö with missed passes, bad communication and an own goal, they were down 1-2 against the 1st division club Öster after 20 minutes. But they worked themselves back and had according to coach Petersson "30 minutes of brilliant football". Even after the extensive substitutions in halftime, when the four players that would join the national team camp at Cyprus left the field, Malmö continued to dominate. The two new for the year forwards Melis and Östman scored their first goals for the team. Caroline Jönsson rested and Stéphanie Öhrström, usually with Malmö's local competitors Husie IF, tended the goal, which might indicate that she will fill the back-up position for Linköping bound Jenny Olsson.

Alvik - Sunnanå SK  1 - 3 (0-2)
Goals: 0-1 Lisa Renberg, 0-2 Jenny Marklund, 1-3 Emma Jonsson
Alvik, relegated from 1st division after last season, hosted as usual a winter mini-tournament in Arcushallen.
With some minor injuries (Maria Nordbrandt, Sanna Frostevall and Mirjam Marklund) as well as several players going to or coming from national team duties (Hanna Marklund for Sweden, Rebecca Smith for New Zealand and Maggie Esseryd for the Lappish national team), Sunnanå fielded a mostly Sörböle (Sunnanå's farm club) team, but were still pretty comfortable. Goalscorers Lisa Renberg and Jenny Marklund are both new signings for 2007.

Sunnanå - Grand Bodø 2 - 1 (2-1)
Goals:
1-0 Lina Johansson, 2-1 Rebecca Smith
In their second match this weekend Sunnanå played Norwegian premier division side Grand Bodø. Sunnanå still fielded a pretty young team, but Rebecca Smith was now deemed fit enough after her transglobal journey and scored the deciding goal. Coach Isaksson was all in all very pleased with his team's performance, especially with some of his young new recruits like Lisa Renberg and Josefin Johansson.

Hammarby - Djurgården/Älvsjö 2 - 1 (1-0)
Hammarby: Katarina Wicksell - Annica Svensson, Elin Sölveskog, Karolina Rinman, Josefin Christensen - Jennie Jonsson, Malin Nykvist - Therese Sandström, Lollo Fors, Marijke Callebaut - Lisa Björkvik
Djurgården: Sofia Åhman - Dorte Dalum Jensen, Jane Törnqvist, Therese Brogårde, Malin Engdahl (46 Anna Lagerberth) - Kristin Bengtsson, Anna Hall, Linda Forsberg, Anne-Marie Norlin - Emma Lundh, Elin Ekblom
Goals: 1-0 Louise Fors, 1-1 Dorte Dalum Jensen, 2-1 Therese Sandström
A decimated Djurgården, missing their national team players Bente Nordby, Sara Thunebro and Victoria Svensson, had to call in players fron the farm club Älvsjö AIK to fill the bench. The club still only has 15 players contracted for 2007. Hammarby on the other hand only sems to be missing Sara Johansson (rehabbing after a stress fracture late last season) and tried out their new 4-2-3-1 formation, where I suppose the forward 1 is for Sara when she returns. Djurgården had, as so often when these two meet, the ball most of the time, but Hammarby's 4-2 in the defense made it difficult for Djurgården to break through. In Hammarby's attack Louise Fors made it difficult for Djurgården's defense and close to the halftime break she created a penalty for herself to kick in goal. Dorte Dalum equalised in the middle of the second half, assisted by Elin Ekblom but Therese Sandström could give Hammarby a not undeserved win on a longshot with 10 minutes left. Hammarby's new coach Anders Bengtsson was not surpring very pleased, singling out Annica Svensson and Louise Fors for special praise, while Djurgården was more quiet about the match.

Training matches: Malmö draws Kolbotn

Malmö FF - Kolbotn IL 2 - 2 (1-1)
Malmö: Caroline Jönsson - Therese Jönsson (80 Lina Nilsson), Malin Levenstad, Emma Wilhelmsson, Nera Smajic - Nanna Johansen (66 Anna Mörstam), Therese Sjögran, Nilla Fischer, Emma Stålhammar (76 Dora Stefansdottir) - Manon Melis (52 Frida Nordin), Therese Lundin
Goals: 1-0 Nanna Johansen, 1-1 Solveig Gulbrandsen, 1-2 Ingvild Landvik Isaksen, 2-2 Therese Sjögran (PK)
The first out-door match of the year was played on a windy and rainy field just north of Malmö. Norwegian champions and UEFA Cup semifinalists Kolbotn went south for what is getting to become their traditional pre-season starters against Malmö FF and Danish perennial champions Brøndby. The Brøndby match was cancelled due to snow, but the Malmö match was played.
In spite of the lousy weather and it being the first big field match in quite a while for both teams, they put up a pretty good match. Malmö's coach Jörgen Petersson was pleased (which is unusual), especially with the back-line, where Therese Jönsson (who just days before signed for another 2 years with the club) and Malmö debutant Nera Smajic impressed on the outsides. The other debutant, Manon Melis, did good under the circumstances but will be better when she has adapted to the faster play in Sweden. "I had to run a lot", Manon commented after the match. "It's a big difference from the league in Holland, it's much faster." Petersson also wants to match her carefully - moving from from Holland to Malmö has doubled the training intensity for her - so 50 minutes a match is as much as she will get for a while.

UEFA Women's Cup: Umeå brush Kolbotn away

Umeå IK  -  Kolbotn IL  6 - 0 (2-0)
Umeå: Sofia Lundgren - Anna Paulsson, Karolina Westberg (62 Lisa Dahlqvist), Johanna Frisk, Maria Bergkvist - Lise Klaveness (83 Erika Karlsson), Malin Moström, Anne Mäkinen - Anna Sjöström (71 June Pedersen), Hanna Ljungberg, Marta
Goals: 1-0 Marta (12), 2-0 Hanna Ljungberg (24), 3-0 Anne Mäkinen (48), 4-0 Malin Moström (55), 5-0 Marta (77), 6-0 Hanna Ljungberg (90+2)
Attendance: 762

Another brilliant performance from Umeå, who in the second half almost seemed to be able to score at will. The Kolbotn players was brought along as extras, something for Umeå to stand out against. "They were simply better than us, but going down 1-11 is really embarassing" said Kolbotn's Solveig Gulbrandsen

Sanna Valkonen, for the last five seasons one of the first picks in an Umeå starting 11, spent the entire match in the bench. Not that she was actually needed, Kolbotn had only two real shots at Umeå's goal, but it smells a bit of retribution for announcing her move to AIK just days before the game.
Valkonen's fellow countrywoman Mäkinen, tired but satisfied in the postgame interview, also became a bit vague when the final against Arsenal came up "I don't know if I'm with the club by then. I have to go home and do some thinking."
Marta, happy as ever, gave a more positive answer to the question about next year: "There's a good chance I'll stay. We just have to talk to [Umeå manager] Roland [Arnqvist] about some details."

UEFA Women's Cup: Umeå already ready for the final

Kolbotn IL - Umeå IK  1 - 5 (1-1)
Umeå: Sofia Lundgren - Anna Paulsson, Karolina Westberg, Sanna Valkonen, Maria Bergkvist - Lise Klaveness, Malin Moström, Anne Mäkinen, Anna Sjöström (78 Lisa Dahlqvist) - Hanna Ljungberg, Marta
Goals: 0-1 Hanna Ljungberg (2), 1-1 Trine Rönning (35), 1-2 Lise Klaveness (54), 1-3 Marta (67), 1-4 Hanna Ljungberg (77), 1-5 Marta (89)
Attendance: 762
Kolbotn suffered a crushing defeat and the TV interviewers couldn't even get the Umeå players (trained to never take anything for granted and never focus on anything than the next match) to question their spot in the finals, that will be played in April next year.
The small Sofiemyr stadium, just south of Oslo, offered a hard and spotwise icy pitch on the cold but sunny Saturday afternoon. Initially players of both teams had problems with the surface and there were some "Bambi on ice" moments before they adapted the play to the surface. But already before that Umeå had taken the lead. Lise Klaveness suddenly was completely free with Kolbotn's keeper and tried to chip her, but hit the goalbar. Hanna Ljungberg was speedy on the rebound and could score after less than two minutes of play. Umeå continued to play good and had a couple more close shots, including a Hanna Ljungberg header, that was saved on or maybe even a bit behind the goalline by a defender. But around 30 minutes into the first half, Kolbotn began to get their play working and Trine Rønning's equaliser was followed by a very good Norwegian period and 1-1 seemed a fair half-time result.
Hanna Ljungberg, interviewed in half-time, thought 1-1 was a good result and wouldn't mind bringing that home to Umeå for the return match.
Umeå had started with a 4-4-2, trying to match Kolbotn's strong 3 player midfield and getting through on the wings. But the more they played on in the second half, the more players they pushed up in their attacks and they often looked more like 4-3-3 and even 4-2-4 when in possession. After 10 minutes of the second half Hanna Ljungberg found Lise Klaveness, who again managed to get free behind the Kolbotn defense line, with a perfect pass to score and give Umeå the lead. After that it was almost play against one goal. Marta out-ran the Kolbotn's defense from what seemed an impossible position. She was at least 5 after two Norwegian defenders, trying to catch a long pass from Anna Sjöström, but beat them to the ball and scored a beautifull goal, shot from the edge of the area.
Ten minutes later Kolbotn's defense again failed to get Umeå's fast attackers off-side and Hanna Ljungberg could get around the keeper and shoot into the open goal. Kolbotn's defensive tactics, with the defense-line high up in the field trying to pressure already in midfield and setting up offside-traps for the forwards, failed completely. "Gutsy, but stupid tactics" as the TV commented, pointing out that Umeå's pacy attack took all the advantage they could from the setup.
Another Kolbotn weakness was their somewhat unreliable goalkeeping. Just before time, Kolbotn keeper Lise Beate Bye got in her head that she, instead of just kicking the ball to the nearest player, should challenge Marta in the penalty area. Marta of course won the ball and could score the fifth and final goal for Umeå.

Swedish Cup final: Linköping crush Umeå's dreams of a treble

Umeå IK - Linköping FC  2 - 3 (0-1)
Umeå: Sofia Lundgren - Anna Paulsson, Sanna Valkonen, Karolina Westberg, Maria Bergkvist - Lisa Dahlkvist (63 Lise Klaveness), Malin Moström, Anne Mäkinen - Anna Sjöström, Hanna Ljungberg, Marta

Goals: 0-1 Maria Aronsson (18), 1-1Sanna Valkonen (47), 1-2 Maria Aronsson (49), 1-3 Josefine Öqvist (62), 2-3 Sanna Valkonen (87)
Attendance: 731
A lot of the pre-match talked been around the possibility for Umeå to win the treble, Swedish league, Swedish Cup and UEFA Cup, with the UEFA Cup as the uncertain factor. But Linköping showed there are ways to defeat Umeå. The used the same recipe that Djurgården/Älvsjö with success used 2004 and 2005. Playing aggressive from the start, keeping very close, pressuring hard and high to disturb Umeå's playmaking midfield and making fast counters when Umeå lose possession. Linköping dominated most of the fiorst half, as Umeå had problems getting back in the game after Maria Aronsson headed a goal from a cross by Maria Karlsson. When Sanna Valkonen could equalise only minutes into the half, heading in an Anne Mökinen free-kick, the match could have turned, but almost immideately after another Maria Karlsson-Maria Aronsson combination gave Linköping the lead again. And at least on TV it looks like the Umeå defense gives Aronsson all the time in the world to dribble her way through to goal. And when Josefine Öqvist caught a careless Umeå pass in midfield, advanced 25 meters on her own and fired away from just outside the area to make it 1-3, the match was over. Umeå pressured, Linköping defended and Hedvig Lindahl saved everything except a late Valkonen goal.
This was Linköping's first title, and part of the reason they won might be found in just that fact. They wanted it more.

Attendance: 2,053

With a 6-1 win from the first quarter-final leg, Umeå didn't have to make too much of an effort, but still played great in the first half, fast passes, good movement and almost never giving the ball away. This gave them a solid 3-0 lead in just a little bit more than 20 minutes. In the second half Umeå's pace slowed and they seemed satisfied just to guard their lead for the rest of the match. The Dutch team's coach Rik de Groot commented that Umeå was by far the best team they've ever played and joked that he would have needed all his 17 players on the field to get an even match.

Elsewhere, Arsenal defeated Breidablik 4-1, thus advancing to the semifinals with a 9-1 aggregate. Another semifinalists will be Kolbotn, that came back from being under 3-0 in their away match against reigning champions Frankfurt, to make it 3-2 and advancing on away goal from the 4-4 aggregate. Also Turbine Potsdam managed to win their home leg, but 2-1 was not enough since Brøndby brought a 3-0 home win with them.
Umeå will play Kolbotn in their semifinal, first leg at Kolbotn November 4 and the second at home November 12. Umeå got a 2-1 win against the Norwegian team in their encounter in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Cup in September.

UEFA Women's CUP: Hanna hat-tricks as Umeå runs over Saestum

SV Saestum - Umeå IK 1 - 6 (0-2)
Umeå: Sofia Lundgren - Anna Paulsson, Karolina Westberg, Sanna Valkonen, Johanna Frisk - Anne Mäkinen, Malin Moström, Lise Klaveness (50 Lisa Dahlqvist) - Anna Sjöström, Hanna Ljungberg (70 Johanna Andersson), Marta (70 Erika Karlsson)
Goals: 0-1 Hanna Ljungberg (8), 0-2 Marta (43) 0-3 Hanna Ljungberg (63), 0-4 Marta (64), 0-5 Hanna Ljungberg (66), 0-6 Anna Sjöström (70), 1-6 Shirley Smith (84)

Umeå has effectively secured advancement to the UEFA Women's Cup semifinals by defeating Dutch champions Saestum 1-6 on the road. "It looks pretty good at least", comments Hanna Ljungberg. But a 6 goal defeat at home isn't just unlikely, it's as close to impossible as anything can get in this game.

Saestum had a sharp attack and were good with the ball and Umeå had to work hard for their goals in the first half. But as the game went along the Dutch players grew more and more tired and Umeå's superior strength and stamina made the difference. After the formidable goal explosion between the 63rd and 66th minute, taking Umeå from a 2 goal to a 5 goal lead, Saestum more or less gave up. Marta's 4-0 goal was a great solo performance, taking the ball at midfield, getting past 3 defenders and finishing by dribbling the Saestum keeper before putting the ball in goal.

In other UEFA Women's Cup QF's today Arsenal defeated Breidablik on Iceland with a clear 5-0 and like Umeå more or less securing their semifinal appearence. The two Wednesday matches were closer. Norwegian Kolbotn got the upper hand in their encounter with reigning UEFA champions, German FFC Frankfurt, with a 2-1 win and Danish Brøndby defeated German champions Turbine Potsdam 3-0. A bit surprising that both German teams lost, but last year both Turbine and Frankfurt managed to come back from defeats in their first semifinal matches and advance to the final. I doubt Turbine will repeat it this year, but Frankfurt managed to get that important away goal and has a good chance to repair their loss at home next week.

A cold and rainy evening, but Umeå made one of their best performances this season, with a virtual exhibition of a versatile and inventive attacking game. Örebro was more out-played than when they visited Umeå last week. In the second half the game was a bit more subdued, as Umeå substituted several key players.

Umeå's victory means that the Swedish FA will look for another date, and possibly venue, for the cup final. The original Nevember 11 date will crash with Umeå's possible semifinal match in UEFA Women's Cup the same weekend, and, seriously, noone expects them go lose their quarters to Saestum.

The Linköping players were all smiles after the match. Winning a spot in the Swedish Cup final is not only the young club's greatest achievement so far, but the greatest achievement for any Linköping football team ever, male or female.

Linköping opened strong with a creative and aggressive play and, their trademark, a lot of running forward with the ball and early on took what seemed a convincimg lead. But a goalkeeper mistake gave Göteborg the opportunity to reduce and yet another Lotta Schelin goal made it even. But Linköping came out for the second half in the same spirit as they started the first. Their wing forwards Ann Westermark and Josefine Öqvist both had a great day and together with midfielders Seger and Milbrett they made the difference. But Göteborg never gave up. After Sara Lindén made it 4-3, Linköping's goal was under constant pressure the 5 extratime minutes.

UEFA Women's Cup: Umeå wins group 2

Umeå IK defeated hosts Kolbotn 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. Umeå started with an early goal from Lise Klaveness in the 4th minute and dominated the play during the first half. In the second half Kolbotn came out better organised and managed to score an equaliser 7 minutes from end and pushed on for the goal that would give them the group win. But instead Umeå got the last minute goal from an Anne Mäkinen direct free-kick.

Umeå's group win puts them against group 3 runners-up, Dutch champions Saestum, in the quarterfinal. Even if Saestum isn't one of the well-known heavyweights of UEFA Women's Cup, they played a tie in their match against Turbine Potsdam and were only one goal away from winning the group.

Goals: 1-0 Maria Aronsson (11), 2-0 Josefine Öqvist (30), 3-0 Tiffeny Milbrett (57), 3-1 Sofia Simonsson (90)
In only a few days Linköping managed to change the picture completely. They had made big changes in their set-up for the Wednesday night Swedish Cup match; Rantanen as right back, Östberg and Milbrett in midfield and, after a surprisingly fast recovery, Hedvig Lindahl back in goal. She had been told by her doctor that there was a 80-20 chance that her groin would be ok, and she decided to play.
Linköping seemed set to show that they are better than they showed in their 6-2 loss last weekend and started with speed and determination and pretty soon had a firm grip on the match. Djurgården on the other hand seemed taken by Linköping's transformation and had one of those it's-really-hard-to-tell-if -they-care-at-all performances.

Umeå players were less than happy with Sunnanå, that showed up without 6 of their usual starters. "This is a competition match, they shopuld use their best team", said Umeå's Klaveness, "This is like they're not even trying to win". Umeå very rarely let Sunnanå borrow the ball, but once again this season showed their problems scoring against teams using deep defense.

Örebro had problems getting their play together until they some time into second half subbed in Lena Andersson in midfield and their passes started reaching the targets. Östman equalised and Scasna, who has became almost invaluable for Örebro, once again scored a winner.
