Sweden finishes training camp with narrow victory

Sweden - Scotland 1 - 0 (0-0)
Sweden: Sofia Lundgren (46 Carola Söberg) - Anna Paulsson, Hanna Marklund (46 Karolina Westberg), Stina Segerström, Caroline Näfver - Salina Olsson (77 Caroline Seger),  Victoria Svensson (69 Therese Sjögran), Nilla Fischer - Josefine Öqvist (46Frida Nordin), Therese Lundin (69 Maria Aronsson), Lotta Schelin.
Goals: 1-0 Nilla Fischer (79)
National team head coach Thomas Dennerby was very pleased with his team after the match: "This was really, really good". Sweden was completely superior in an intense, high-paced match with tough duels.
"I think they managed to get over to our side of the field a total of three times in the second half", Dennerby  tried to explain the lack of goals, "so it was pretty crowded on Scotland's side". Since Carola Söberg's national team debut occured in the second half, it also became rather laid back without any opportunities to prove herself.
Scotland's attacking game lost it's driving force when Arsenal striker Julie Fleeting was forced to step off in half-time after a collision early in the first half.

Going to the week long training camp, Dennerby had stated that they were not there to win matches. Just before going away, the team had their yearly fitness tests and the camp continued with a focus on the traditional Swedish strength and fitness preseason training. They even had a training session only hours before the kick-off for the Scotland match.
In a couple of interviews before the camp, Dennerby addressed the question of the retirement of Malin Moström, Anna Sjöström and Linda Fagerström (277 caps between them). "When four midfielders leaves [he also mentions Djurgården's Elin Ekblom, who turned down any further national team assignments a couple of weeks ago], it makes the selection easier. [...] When this happens, usually somebody else steps forward and blossoms. I'm primarily thinking of Therese Sjögran. She might take that last step". Also Frida Östberg, by the way very emotional over the absence of her close friends Malin and Anna, pointed at Sjögran: "She has always excelled on training, but she has been moved around a lot in the team and maybe hasn't felt secure. I believe a lot in her."

Sweden draws Japan in first 2007 friendly

Sweden - Japan 2 - 2 (2-1)
Sweden: Caroline Jönsson - Frida Östberg, Hanna Marklund, Karolina Westberg (61 Stina Segerström), Sara Thunebro - Maria Karlsson (74 Frida Nordin), Caroline Seger (71 Salina Olsson), Therese Sjögran (61 Nilla Fischer), Josefine Öqvist - Victoria Svensson (71 Therese Lundin), Lotta Schelin (46 Maria Aronsson).
Goals: 1-0 Lotta Schelin (23), 1-1 Miyama (25), 2-1 Therese Sjögran (34 PK), 2-2 Arakawa (79)
Considering that the Swedish team arrived at Cyprus only the day before the Monday match, directly from the strict preseason training regiment at home, coach Dennerby deemed the performance satisfying against a Japan that is gearing up for their deciding World Cup qualifiers against Mexico next month.
Sweden took the lead as Lotta Schelin scored from a clever Sjögran pass but Japan could almost immideately equalize. Therese Sjögran then gave Sweden the lead again on a penalty kick after a Japanese defender handballed. Towards the end Japan took over the match and the 79th minute equalizer wasn't unexpected. "We didn't manage to keep the play up at the end of the match and lost a few simple balls", comments Thomas Dennerby, who still was satisfied with the performance over the full 90 minutes, "considering it is very early on the season". The numerous substitutions in the second half also made the Swedish game a bit more disorganised, but then substitutions is an essential part of these kind of matches.
Dennerby coped with the retirement of midfielders Moström, Sjöström and Fagerström by starting with an expected Seger/Sjögran centre with Linköping's speedy Maria Karlsson and Josefine Öqvist on the wings. Lotta Schelin took rehabbing Hanna Ljungberg's spot in the attack, but had to step down already at the halftime recess with groin pains. She said it was mostly precaution and she should be all right for the Scotland match later this week.
Victoria Svensson has inherited Malin Moström's captain's armband and was replaced in that part by Hanna Marklund when she was substituted late in the second half.

Injured Larsson replaced by Näfver

Linköping defender Sara Larsson has been forced to retire from the squad for Sweden's Cyprus training camp on Cyprus by an old calf injury, that hasn't healed altogether. Kif Örebro's Caroline Näfver, who was part of the Cyprus camp squad last year too, has been called in as replacement.

Lengthy thigh injury keeps Hanna away from national team

Hanna Ljungberg tells Damfotboll.com that she herself made the decision to stay back from the Cyprus camp with the national team. She has had problems with her left thigh muscle since the fall season last year. "You could notice, since I hardly ever played a full match", says Hanna. The pain in the thigh came back when she started pre-season training. Her doctors hasn't been able to see any problem other than a swelling. Hanna is now doing light rehab training to see if the pain will go away. "It is of course sad to have to stay away from the national team camp, but I felt I had to do this to be able to get well. There are other more important things coming up, that I want to be part of."

Sweden squad named for Cyprus camp

Thomas Dennerby today announced the squad for the training camp on Cyprus, February 11-18. The camp includes matches against Japan (February 12) and Scotland (February 17), but mostly hard training: "The players will continue their pre-season training programs. We're not going to Cyprus with the main purpose to defeat Scotland, we're looking much further ahead." Still, Japan will be an interesting encounter as they are building up for their March World Cup qualification matches against Mexico.
The most interesting to see in Dennerby's first 2007 squad was his choice for the midfield - how he replaced the retired trio Fagerström, Moström and Sjöström (and for the first time I noticed that they all have surnames ending in "ström". Peculiar, isn't it? Not that "ström" is an unusual part of a Swedish surname, it's probably one of the most common and an evidence of the Swedish fascination with nature: it means swiftly flowing water. But it can also mean current as in sea current or electric current. This was a ridiculously long parenthesis). So we're looking at Nilla Fischer, Frida Nordin and Salina Olsson instead. Not that exciting. And since Hedvig Lindahl isn't available, Umeå's newly signed keeper Carola Söberg makes the trip and could get her first national team cap. And Hanna Ljungberg is intentionally left out - Dennerby thinks she needs to rest.

Dennerby visited Linköping yesterday on his tour to national team players. He had talks with Sara Larsson, Frida Östberg, Caroline Seger, Josefine Öqvist, Hedvig Lindahl, Maria Karlsson and Maria Aronsson and would have liked to get a one-on-one with Linköping defender Lotta Rohlin, who unfortunately was in Germany visiting her boyfriend. "She has for a long time been playing on a consistently high level, and that's what makes a player interesting for the national team", he commented on Rohlin, who at 26 has never played for the full national team.

Dennerby says Hanna Ljungberg will be key player in China

National team head coach Thomas Dennerby visited Umeå to meet and talk with candidates for the World Cup squad. He has about 30 prospects on his list, of which 21 will make the trip to China. In Umeå he had face-to-face meetings with goalie Carola Söberg, defenders Maria Bergkvist, Anna Paulson and Karolina Westberg and forwards Hanna Ljungberg and Madeleine Edlund.
Sweden are having two big national team meetings in the spring, on Cyprus in February and the Algarve Cup in Portugal in March and Dennerby hopes he will be able to give everyone on his list a chance show themselves at at least one of these. And he has not written off the possibility that someone not on his list will impress enough to make the final team.
Dennerby also says that he has no intention to find a replacement for Malin Moström. "We will have to change our way to play." Instead of a fast offensive midfielder in the center of the field, there might be more movement on the wings. "We will have to test this during the spring". He adds that Hanna Ljungberg will be a key player: "She only played 5 of our qualification matches but scored 10 goals." His main concern is that she stays healthy and he will probably keep her out of some of the spring events in order to keep her that way.

No player bonus for World Cup qualification

When Germany qualified for the 2007 Women's World Cup in China, the players were awarded a € 200,000 bonus to be shared according to how much they have played in the qualification matches. No such thing will happen in Sweden.

"We're putting much more money into the women's football programme than to the individual players", says Swedish FA's general secretary Sune Hellströmer. "Only this year we've spent SEK 30 millions". And, unlike the men's side, participating in a World Cup is a financial loss. While a men's side get's SEK 40 millions from FIFA just for qualifying, there are no such contributions on the women's side. "The net cost for the 2003 World Cup was SEK 4 millions", says Hellströmer, "and we don't expect to make any money this time either".

Västerbottenskuriren:

On a personal note, and women's issues aside, I can't really see that defeating Iceland and Czech republic is something that is above expectations and reason for a bonus. But if we get to see them coming home with any silverware from China, I expect the players to be owerwhelmingly gratified.

Sweden qualifies for China 2007

Sweden - Czech republic  2 - 0 (2-0)

Sweden: Caroline Jönsson Malmö FF - Frida Östberg Linköping FC, Hanna Marklund Sunnanå SK, Stina Segerström KIF Örebro, Sara Thunebro Djurgården/Älvsjö - Therese Sjögran Malmö FF, Malin Moström Umeå IK, Caroline Seger Linköping FC (85 Nilla Fischer Malmö FF), Lotta Schelin Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC - Hanna Ljungberg Umeå IK (62 Josefine Öqvist Linköping FC), Victoria Svensson Djurgården/Älvsjö (77 Therese Lundin Malmö FF).
Goals: 1-0 Hanna Ljungberg (5), 2-0 Hanna Ljungberg (30)

Before the match media tried to build up tension, branding it a do-or-die game. But Czech and KIF Örebro star Pavlina Scasna was closer to the truth when she calmly analyzed "If we play on the top of our ability and Sweden has a really bad day and we get the first goal, we might be able to shake them". Already when Hanna Ljungberg headed in the first goal from a great Caroline Seger pass, it was obvious that none of Pavlina's conditions were there. The Czech side hardly managed a single dangerous attempt on Sweden's goal and, in spite of not scoring at all during the last hour of play, Sweden played an attractive, inventive football with a good game flow. Seger, who has made some rather pale performances lately, did great in midfield and Lotta Schelin showed speed and skill.

Post-match comments were very positive. There has been reason to worry about the national team, but this match showed something else, something that gives great promises for Chine 2007. Coach Dennerby has had two major tasks since he took over last summer: qualify for the World Cup and start the generation change. The first one wasn't really that big a task, but sports writers across the Swedish media gives him praise for the manner in which he performed his second task. Lotta Schelin and Caroline Seger, that got their first taste of the national team under Marika Domanski Lyfors, have now established themselves in the starting eleven while this years newcomers Stina Segerström and Sara Thunebro have impressed. Dennerby himself says that next years squad for the World Cup is pretty much set already, but there is still place for one or two new players.

Johansson and Dowling called up for national teams

Sweden one step closer to World Cup

World Cup Qualification: Iceland - Sweden 0 - 4 (0-1)
Sweden: Caroline Jönsson Malmö FF - Frida Östberg Linköping FC, Hanna Marklund Sunnanå SK, Stina Segerström KIF Örebro, Sara Thunebro Djurgården/Älvsjö - Lotta Schelin Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC (72 Josefine Öqvist Linköping), Malin Moström Umeå IK (80 Anna Sjöström Umeå IK), Caroline Seger Linköping FC, Therese Sjögran Malmö FF - Hanna Ljungberg Umeå IK (Therese Lundin Malmö)), Victoria Svensson Djurgården/Älvsjö.
Goals: 0-1 Malin Moström (13 PK), 0-2 Sara Thunebro (62), 0-3 Victoria Svensson (80), 4-0 Hanna Ljungberg (86)
Sweden gained an easy victory against an uninspired Iceland. As usual recently Sweden had a much better second half than first, where the lone goal came from Victoria Svensson winning a penalty in a situation that could have been waved away by another ref. Sweden wasn't brilliant, but used the wings fine and you could see some nice combinations between midfield and forwards. A really good Ljungberg-Moström-Svensson one resultet in the third goal. Sara Thunebro (who alternates between defending and attacking in her Djurgården/Älvsjö) showed a lot of attacking spirit as an outside defender.

A fun little story claims that there was some uncertainty among the players weather an eventual tie in the group with Czech republic would be decided on goal difference or head-to-head. Caroline Jönsson claimed head-to-head, but when the players asked coach Dennerby he claimed goal difference was the tie-breaker. He didn't correct himself until the last minutes of the match. But should it really be necessary to trick the team into scoring??

Erla Arnardottir (Mallbacken) and Asthildur Helgadottir (Malmö FF) played for Iceland.

I don't know if there still is something unclear with internet rights for Sweden match clips, but there definitely is a problem. Hardly anything gets published. But, as a little comfort, here is a clip from the Finland-Denmark match, courtesy of the Finnish network YLE. Finland defeated Denmark 2-1, home goals by Laura Kalmari (Djurgården/Älvsjö) and Minna Mustonen (Bälinge). Sanna Valkonen (Umeå), Jessica Julin (Göteborg), Anne Mäkinen (Umeå) and Anna-Kaisa Rantanen (Linköping) also played and for Denmark Katrine Pedersen (Djurgården/Älvsjö) and Nanna Johansen (Malmö FF).

Qbik's Anja Mittag scored as Germany defeated Ireland 3-0. Pavlina Scasna (KIF Örebro) scored the opener when Czech republic defeated Belorussia 3-0. Lise Klaveness (Umeå) played the first half for Norway as they secured qualification with a 1-1 draw at Ukraine. And Bälinge's Amy Vermeulen got her first cap as she started for Canada in their 0-1 victory over France.

Good second half for Sweden, lots of good combinations. But Portugal is of course a suitable team to test your attack against. Lundin and Schelin proved to be a good substitution for injured Ljungberg and Svensson, and Sjögran and Seger impressing on midfield.

I'm off to catch a plane now, back on the net next weekend, at the latest .

Nilla Fischer to replace Victoria Svensson in Portugal match

Djurgården/Älvsjö's Victoria Svensson has decided to take sick-leave from Sweden's World Cup qualifier against Portugal next weekend with a sore achilles tendon, that will probably take a week or two to heal. Malmö's Nilla Fischer will replace.

Westberg back on national team for Portugal match

Karolina Westberg replaces Frida Östberg, who is suspended after recieving two yellow cards in the earlier World Cup qualification matches, for the match against Portugal on May 7. That is the only change of the squad that defeated Czech republic last weekend.

If Hanna Marklund gets to start, and I think we can rely on that, it will be her 100th national team match.

Goalkeepers: Caroline Jönsson, Malmö FF, Hedvig Lindahl, Linköping.

Goals: 1-0 Pavlina Scasna (2), 1-1 Sara Larsson (23), 1-2 Lotta Schelin (62), 2-2 Alexandra Mouchova (67), 2-3 Lotta Schelin (69)

- "It wasn't my best national team match, but deciding an important match like this feels great". Lotta Schelin certainly lived up to expectations when she scored two goals for Sweden, filling in for injured Hanna Ljungberg in Sweden's attack.

Defeating Czech republic was much harder work than expected but coach Thomas Dennerby was satisfied with one thing: "We got the work done. But it was never a great match."

The Czech team got a great start when player of the match Pavlina Scasna barely two minutes into the game beat Stina Segerström to the ball and put it just beyond the reach of Sweden's goalkeeper Caroline Jönsson. Sweden continued to have problems in defense and were on several occations saved by good goalkeeping from Jönsson. Sweden equalised after 22 minutes when Sara Larsson headed in a hard, well placed corner kick by Linda Fagerström and began to gain control of the midfield, but didn't manage to create much up front.

In the middle of the second half the match was decided, when Lotta Schelin twice ran through the somewhat shaky Czech defense to score from well placed assists by Victoria Svensson and Anna Sjöström. But the Czech also knew the importance of the match and kept working for at least an equaliser. They managed once, when Alexandra Mouchova shot from close range following a corner kick where the Swedish team once again were having big problems winning the ball and getting it out of the penalty area, and had other close shots but Sweden managed to hold on to their lead.

"We're not in the World Cup yet, but I think we've opened the door slightly", was Dennerby's answer when asked about the significance of the win. But the match also showed that qualifying for the big events is no longer a formality for Sweden. The competition is closing up.

Djurgården/Älvsjö striker Laura Kalmari, celebrating her 100th appearence for the Finnish national team, got a hattrick when Finland defeated Poland 5-1. Sanna Valkonen and Anne Mäkinen (Umeå), Jessica Julin (Göteborg) and  Anna-Kaisa Rantanen (Linköping) also started and Bälinge's Minna Mustonen joined as a second half substitute.

Dennerby: It's essential that we defeat Czech republic

- "This match is extremely important. The team that wins will be in a very good position to qualify for the World Cup in China", says national team head coach Thomas Dennerby before the qualifier against Chech republic on Saturday. Should Sweden fail to qualify to the World Cup, interest for the women's game would surely drop significantly, he emphasizes.

Dennerby expects the Chech to defend deep on their own side, so the key to success is keep up pace and movement. It's also important to be able to keep the ball to the ground and avoid high balls to the forwards, since the Chech backline is rather tall.

The starting line-up will not be released until an hour before the match, but Dennerby says that the team that played the  Algarve Cup match against France is pretty much what comes to mind. Except injured Hanna Ljungberg, where he toys wth the idea of playing Lotta Schelin in her position.
