Damallsvenskan Round IX: Umeå's 55th in undefeated streak

Bälinge - AIK 2 - 0 (1-0)
Bälinge: Veronika Svensson - Petra Vaelma, Linda Sembrant, Lina Andersson, Karolina Mats - Linda Blom (68 Heidi Matinlassi), Moa Eriksson (62 Julia Lyckberg), Anne Mäkinen, Katri Nokso-Koivisto - Emma Lindqvist (58 Annette Kent), Sanna Talonen,

Goals: 1-0 Emma Lindqvist (40), 2-0 Heidi Matinlassi (79)
Attendance: 945
Bälinge were the better side and had a really good game in the beginning. They managed to convert their advantage when Emma Lindqvist scored from a Talonen pass and Heidi Matinlassi secured the win after Annette Kent beat two AIK defenders and fed her the ball.
There were 7 former or present Finnish national team players on the field and if Laura Kalmari hadn'ät been on the injury list there would have been eight. This is to my knowledge a kind of record for Damallsvenskan.

Newcomers Falköping against Umeå could only end one way. Falköping started with a courageous high pressure, but were punished early by Marta, who throughout the whole match was even more excellent than usually. Karolina Westberg scored her third goal this season, again on a set piece. Coach Jeglert was satisfied with a secure win, but somewhat worried that the team didn't get more out of their dominance and had a tendency to fall in in Falköping's lower pace.

Västerbottenskuriren: UIK-tåget går inte att stoppa
Falköping, that regulary draws about a thousand spectators to their home games, had made a big effort to make the Umeå match a major local event, and succeeded. Over 5,000 is a huge figure for the small countryside town with around 15,000 inhabitants.
All Damallsvenskan clubs rely a lot on volunteers, but a small town club like Falköping probably more than most. There is a story (video clip) from SVT and a slide-show from Göteborgsposten that gives you a nice view of a modest but determined club.

Hammarby - Sunnanå 1 - 1 (0-1)
Hammarby: Katarina Wicksell - Malin Nykvist, Elin Sölveskog, Josefin Christensen, Annica Svensson - Jennie Jonsson - Lousie Fors, Therese Sandström, Josefin Weijner (30 Therese Dahlberg) - Jessica Landström, Sara Johansson,

Goals: 0-1 Maria Nordbrant (5), 1-1 Jessica Landström (73)
Attendance: 408
Sunnanå started good at Hammarby's arena Kanalplan, and Maria Nordbrant scored with a long high ball already after 5 minutes. The guests continued good, but couldn't profit from it and the longer the match went on the more they were pressed back. Hammarby fed Sara Johansson and Jessica Landström with long balls. This finally paid off when Sara Johansson recieved one of those and served Landström a perfect pass in the box. Both teams were rather disappointed with the result and thought they could have done better.

Goals: 1-0 Emelia Erixon (59), 1-1 Caroline Seger (64)
Attendance: 966
Neither of the coaches were very pleased with the match, even if Örebro's Holmlund had to admit that the draw against the star-loaded Linköping is another proof that they can challenge the top teams. None of the teams managed to create much in front and both coaches thought their teams were passive.
Örebro's young Emelie Erixon continues to score, this time assisted by Keeley Dowling who Holmlund still plays in the attack, and is now third in the goalscoring league, after Schelin and Marta but before big names like Hanna Ljungberg, Victoria Svensson and Asthildur Helgadottir. She silll didn't make the Sweden U21-selection and new U21 coach Lena Videkull admitted that Erixon has scored a lot the last matches, but that she is still is a too unevenplayer.

7-0, that is how good Malmö is, commented Qbik's coach Janne Jansson, who was fairly pleased with his team's performance, "much better than we played against Hammarby". Malmö was just as superior as the figures would suggest. There was a period in the middle of the match when Qbik managed to hold on to the ball, but then the excellent goalkeeper Maria Yatrakis got sent of the field for bringing down Manon Melis, who was alone with the keeper. Malmö's national team forward Therese Lundin made her come-back after a long injury period and scored, which should please national team coach Dennerby, who has picked her for the Euro qualifiers later this month.

Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC - Djurgården 3 - 2 (0-0)
Göteborg: Sandra Bjurteg - Maria Nilsson, Maria Karlsson, Jenny Engwall, Elin Dahl Örn - Sofie Andersson (60 Johanna Almgren), Anna Andén (88 Lisa Ek), Salina Olsson, Camilla Schelin (40 Marlene Sjöberg) - Lotta Schelin, Sara Lindén
Djurgården: Bente Nordby - Sara Thunebro, Jane Törnqvist, Therese Brogårde, Kristin Bengtsson - Elin Ekblom, Ariane Hingst, Anna Hall, Victoria Svensson, Emma Lundh (63 Annemarie Norlin) - Linda Forsberg
Goals: 1-0 Lotta Schelin (64), 2-0 Lotta Schelin (66), 3-0 Lotta Schelin (85), 3-1 Linda Forsberg (89), 3-2 Ariane Hingst (93)
Attendance: 602
Djurgåden had the ball, had the play, created the opportunities, had 28-7 in shots on goal. But Göteborg had Lotta Schelin. Djurgården had 60 minutes of complete domination, including three goals waved off by the referee (two off-sides, one foul). In the 64th minute Marlene Sjöberg gave Schelin a long, perfectly addressed pass and Lotta ran away from her defenders and scored. Two minutes later it was Salina Olsson who found Schelin to make it 2-0 and Djurgården lost a lot of their steam. Göteborg now managed to get some time with the ball and Schelin could finnish her hat-trick and close the match five minutes from time, this time assisted by Sara Lindén. Djurgården didn't give up and scored twice in the closing minutes, but too little, too late.
Victoria Svensson was everywhere for Djurgården in the first half and Jane Törnqvist seemed to work her way back into the national team, but they had problems getting close to Göteborg's goal (where young substitute Sandra Bjurteg made a great debut, even if she had both the sideposts and the referee to help her out) and there were a lot of misdirected shots from distance. Besides the brilliant Lotta Schelin, sporting a brand new L8 tattoo on her forearm, Marlene Sjöberg made a big difference when she entered and Jenny Engwall is getting more and more indispensible in defense.

Damallsvenskan Round VIII: AIK's first win

The better teams in damallsvenskan often claims that they know how Umeå can be defeated, and it always involves getting close and physical with Umeå's attackers. Djurgården's Benny Persson is one of those and he has also managed to pull it off a couple of times. But it is much easier to know than to do. This time it was Göteborg's management that talked widely about how Umeå's foreign players gets out of balance and starts whining when things doesn't work out for them. This launched a newspaper quarrel between Umeå and Göteborg, where Andrée Jeglertz actually admitted that Marta used to have this problem, but no longer has. It's hard to say if the public row between the clubs had any influence on the match result, but at least we got fun headlines for a while.

AIK - Falköpings KIK 2 - 0 (2-0)

AIK: Sofia Lundgren - Linda Lekander, Sanna Valkonen, Frida Höglund, Madelene Göras - Anna Lundin (65 Sofia Simonsson), Jessica Juhlin, Madelene Wedin, Ingrid Bohlin - Nazanin Vaseghpanah (83 Lina Hedqvist), Freja Egerbrant
Falköping: Malin Andersson - Nettan Hofling, Karin Neuman, Elin Osbeck, Emma Eriksson, Sandra Krantz (70 Josefin Alfsson), Madeleine Tegström, Camilla Sanderheim, Sofia Fröjdstedt (83 Charlotte Abrahamsson), Linnea Liljegärd, Cynthia Uwak
Goals: 1-0 Jessica Julin (16), 2-0 Nazanin Vaseghpanah (24)
Attendance: 564
If AIK was ever going to win a match this season, this was the best opportunity. Home match against the presumed weakest side in the league. But it wasn't easy. Falköping started strong and impressed, pressuring high in the midfield and a pacy attacking play. But AIK, with Valkonen and Höglund playing the main parts, defended skilfully. And after 15 minutes Nazanin Vaseghpanah escaped her defender and found team captain Jessica Julin with a pass. Julin who had been left unnoticed by Falköping's defense had no problems scoring. Less than 10 minutes later a similar defense error allowed Vaseghpanah to head in a cross from Anna Lundin. Falköping's strong attack with Sandra Krantz, Linnea Liljegärd and Cynthia Uwak continued to worry AIK, but Jessica Julin played a key role on the defensive midfield position to fend off the attacks.

Goals: 1-0 Anna Hall (44), 2-0 Linda Forsberg (50)
Attendance: 783
The first half was an even affair, but not very well played. Both teams seemed stressed and made a lot of mistakes and passes were often off target. But close to the end of the first half Elin Ekblom managed to find Anna Hall with a good pass from her right side. Hall made no mistake and Djurgården could leave for halftime with a 1-0 lead and a discouraged Malmö team. And only five minutes in the second Djurgården could decide the match with a goal from Linda Forsberg, assisted by a nice cooperation from Djurgården's wingers Kristin Bengtsson and Elin Ekblom.
Those who watched the match said that Malmö seemed drained, more mentally than physically, by the Umeå match 4 days earlier and coach Pettersson was very disappointed with some of his players lack of dedication. Djurgården's Benny Persson was satisfied and looks forward to facing Umeå.

Attendance: 527
Linköping got off to a great start with Mmadu's header from a set piece, but Bälinge came back almost immedeately. First Annette Kent headed in a Mäkinen free-kick and then Linda Blom gave Sanna Talonen a perfect pass behind Linköping's defense line. A semi-upset (defeating Linköping doesn't qualify as a real upset this season) seemed to be on it's way. But Linköping finally was rewarded for their dominance and Sara Larsson equalised as she pushed in a pass from Josefine Öqvist and then Öqvist could score herself, as she from 30 meters noticed Bälinge's goalie a bit off position. Still, not really satisfying play from Linköping according to coach Pettersson while Bälinge did their best performance so far this season, forwards Kent and Talonen singled out.

Two sides that really needed a win met in Karlstad. A lot of the match was characterized by what you could call tennis - high balls bouncing back and forth from defense to defense. Qbik was creating a few opportunities in the beginning, but when Sara Johansson headed in a goal following a cornershot after a little bit more than 20 minutes, Hammarby also took over the match. Qbik lost much of their heart while Hammarby's defense made a good performance. Qbik lost three players to injuries; Ifeoma Dieke with a foot injury and Therese Lückner and Lisa Mellberg with knee problems.
Btw, I use the website damfakta.se for line-ups and match-stats. As far as I understand the site is managed by EFD, the association of Damallsvenskan clubs and should be accurate. But Qbik's Dieke has according to newspaper reports played at least two games for her new club now, including this, but is not to be found on the line-ups. Things like that really bothers my inner accountant.

Örebro had to leave forward engine Pavlina Scasna at home, but made the surprising choice to let just returned defender Keeley Dowling take her place. Sunnanå made a strong performance, dominated midfield and didn't let Örebro much into the game. But Örebro took relly goo care of their opportunities and scored 3 goals on 3 chances according to a disappointed Sunnanå coach. Emelia Erixon is really hot at the moment (7 goals in the league so far) and national team coach Thomas Dennerby praised her - "She has been developng a lot and is really fast, one of the fastest in the league" - but didn't really sound like he seriously considered her for a national team spot.

Attendance: 2,046
Umeå started with a really great first half, showing off a speedy, aggressive and agile attack. After only 30 minutes they were 4 goals up, Marta and Ma scoring two each. Ma hadn't convinced before this game and can still look a bit sluggish, but now showed her quality as a goalscorer. After 40 minutes Hanna Ljungberg had to leave the pitch, bleeding from an eyebrow after heading into Göteborg's defender Marlene Sjöberg. After that Umeå slowed down and mostly wnet through the motions in the second half. Still Karolina Westberg could make it 5-0 after a set piece before Göteborg ran through a somewhat unfocused Umeå defense in the last minutes.
Göteborg didn't get the best preparation as a air traffic strike forced them to take the overnight train to Umeå and goalie Maria Edman walked off with an injury when coach Pringle already had used all his substitutions and had to use outfield player Camilla Schelin as replacement. But none of this really affected the outcome.
Umeå's forced rotation of their non-EU players this time gave Elaine the opportunity to rest in the stands. When coach Jeglertz was asked when he would rest Marta he answered: "We rested her in a cup match. I think that is enough rest for her." Marta is extremely important for Umeå. When the team works great she is the hub that everything moves around and when it doesn't work as good, like against Malmö, she is the one that still decides the match in Umeå's favour.

Damallsvenskan Round VII: Lucky win for Umeå

"I know the entire Swedish football community want's us to lose, but we don't intend to please them" was Umeå coach Andrée Jeglertz' words before the early league final against Malmö. And after the match, he conceded that it was a lucky win, but "you earn your luck". And he appearently meant that Umeå had some luck due from the Arsenal matches. Pity Malmö had to pay, they did a pretty good performance.
And this might be the right time to explain some football fundamentals. The game is about scoring goals, and more precisely more goals than the other team. Nothing else is important unless it helps you score. Being good at football is being good at outscoring your opponent, there is no other way. Malmö created more, dominated midfield and made better passes against Umeå yesterday. But they were not a better team. The best team is the one that scores the most goals.

Hammarby IF - Djurgården 1 - 2 (0-1)

Hammarby: Katarina Wicksell - Malin Nykvist, Josefin Christensen, Elin Sölveskog, Annica Svensson - Jennie Jonsson - Lousie Fors, Therese Sandström, Josefin Weijner (73 Andrea Comaneci) - Sara Johansson, Anna Lindblom (46 Jessica Landström)

Goals: 0-1 Elin Ekblom (10), 0-2 Victoria Svensson (52), 1-2 Jessica Landström (85)
Attendance: 1,001
Ariane Hingst picked up a loose ball from Hammarby's defense ten minutes into the match and gave it to Elin Ekblom, who directly shot what might have been meant as cross but ended in net. Djurgården continued to dominate but hammarby managed to defend until another defensive mistake gave the ball to Victoria Svensson inside the penalty area. Hammarby started to get more offensive towards the end of the match, much thanks to Jessica Landström, and with only minutes left Sara Johansson outrun Jane Törnqvist, setting up Jessica Landgren who didn't have any problems making it 1-2. Hammarby continued to press against Djurgården's goal the remaining minutes, but Djurgården was never really threatened.

Only seconds into the match, Bälinge's Sanna Talonen could profit from a mistake by Sunnanå's Rebecca Smith. After that the guests had a good period and they could almost run through Bälinge's defense at will. First Kicki Wiklund and then Lina Johansson went solo to score and Johansson even passed Bälinge's unlucky goalie Veronika Svensson. But in the second half Bälinge got more stability in their game, much thanks to Anne Mäkinen. Bälinge's Finnish winger Nokso-Koivisto equalised with a lucky goal that seemed like a pass, misjudged by Sunnanå's keeper. After that Bälinge pushed for a victory, but Sunnanå managed to fend them off.

Had it not been for great goal-keeping by Maria Yatrakis the figures had been a lot more embarrasing for Qbik. It was play against one goal most of the match, but it took a penalty for Örebro to decide the match. And Yatrakis even saved that, but Örebro's Emelia Erixon (5 goals this season) was first on the rebound. Falköping has over and over again showed that they can be difficult to break. In the first half they managed to frustrate Göteborg and shut out their usually dangerous attack and even got the lead after a direct free-kick by junior attacker Linnea Liljegärd. But something happened in Göteborg's locker-room at halftime ("We got a good telling-off", revealed Lotta Schelin). After 5 minutes Lotta Schelin scored on the rebound from a Sara Lindén penalty shot and 5 minutes later Sofie Andersson got lucky with a really long shot, when Falköping's players were standing still waiting for the whistle for a free-kick. Now in the lead Göteborg played with much more confidence and a couple of Schelin sisters cooperations resulted in two more goals before Lotta (now 9 goals in 7 matches) completed her hat-trick. Göteborg's fullback Marlene Sjöberg didn't have much problems neutralizing Falköping's Cynthia Uwak, who played her first match from start. Falköping's coach Krister Engström was very disappointed with the refereeing, which he claimed gave Göteborg their two first goals.

Match of the week: the two top sides, great crowd (actually a Malmö all-time high!), vocal fans from both sides, nice weather, entertaining and exciting play. Malmö owned the midfield with Sjögran and Fischer making players like Klaveness and Ljungberg (once again in her new Moström position) fairly unvisible and their teenage defense once again were playing tight and coordinated. Umeå still came through on the wings and were a lot more efficient in front of goal than Malmö. Both Helgadottir and Melis were probably brought on from the injury list a little premature and didn't look their best. Ramona Bachman (who was picked over Ma Xiaoxu, since coach Jeglertz gave priority to the wings, which he considered Malmö's weakest point) scored her first Damallsvenskan goal somewhat against the run of the play. After Lina Nilsson's equaliser, set up by a great performance by Therese Sjögran, Malmö almost camped on Umeå's half and created lots of opportunities. But the match was ultimately decided by, who else, Marta, who's dangerous pass in front of goal probably would have reached an Umeå player if Lina Nilsson hadn't made her failed attempt to clear it, an attempt that ended in an own goal. After that Malmö's players lost most of their energy and the game faded out. Umeå's Andrée Jeglertz praised Malmö and called his victory "lucky" while Malmö's Jörgen Pettersson stated that you have to score more than once with eight or nine great chances if you want to defeat Umeå.

Damallsvenskan Round VI: Cynthia Uwak's Swedish debut

This is starting to look a bit familiar. A top that already seems to have ran away from the rest (only new is that Linköping has been replaced by Sunnanå!), Umeå with 6 straight wins, Malmö and Djurgården undefeated. The next two rounds (the first already on Wednesday) Malmö will be playing both Umeå and Djurgården. I know it is early, but those two matches might be crucial for the outcome of the championship battle. Malmö hasn't been shy about their chances against Umeå after the last two wins - "We are a better team", says Therese Sjögran - but they have almost all their forwards on the injury list. Let's guess that this will still look familiar next week.

Djurgården - Kif Örebro 1 - 0 (0-0)

Djurgården: Bente Nordby - Sara Thunebro, Therese Brogårde, Jane Törnqvist, Dorte Dalum Jensen - Elin Ekblom, Ariane Hingst (76 Linda Forsberg), Anna Hall, Kristin Bengtsson (60 Annemarie Norlin) - Emma Lundh, Victoria Svensson
Örebro: Kristin Hammarström - Ingrid Ericson, Stina Segerström (83 Marina Pettersson), Sandra Linder, Caroline Näfver - Malin Nilsson, Lena Andersson, Marie Hammarström, Elin Magnusson - Pavlina Scasna, Emelia Erixon (64 Hodan Siid-Ahmed)
Goals:
1-0 Victoria Svensson (56)
Attendance: 437
Rikard Holmlund return to Damallsvenskan was fairly successful in the first half, when his Örebro kept Djurgården at arms length, not allowing their first shot on goal until the 32nd minute, when Ariane Hingst's shot touched the woodwork. Djurgården started to get more out of their possession in the second half and Victoria Svensson (who turned 30 the day before) could finally score, heading in a cross from Elin Ekblom. All in all a decent Damallsvenskan match, that Djurgården maybe should have managed to get a bigger win. Rikard Holmlund commented his first match with Örebro "I hate to lose, but they were stronger today". National team coach Thomas Dennerby was present, watching a fairly large group of presumptive World Cup players, Swedish and foreign.

4 points in six matches for pre-season championship contender Linköping. "They can definitely forget the gold now", commented TV4's Pontus Kåmark after the draw at Sunnanå. Sunnanå got the opening they could only wish for, when Anna Bodén scored from 25 meters less than a minute after kick-off. They continued to create scoring opportunities as Bodén and Frostevall in midfield fought down Linköping's Seger and Mmadu. Linköping still managed to equalize, Mmadu tapping in the ball from a free-kick. Then the cold, the rain and the wind began to drain the will and power from both teams and they both seemed satisfied to preserve their point.

Umeå, where in particular the defense seemed unprepared for a real match, was caught napping by Hammarby. Two Hammarby goals in less than ten minutes and very close to a third, Sara Johansson and Belgian midfielder Marijke Callebaut cooperating on all three occasions. But Hammarby lost Callebaut to a hip injury and Umeå began, slowly, to gear up. Marta equalized with one of her trademark direct corner-kicks and after that the game was over for Hammarby. They continued to try to move forward, but had increasingly big problems fending off Umeå's attacks. In spite of being down two goals, there was never any real worry on Umeå's bench. "We made too many mistakes in the beginning of the match, but we knew they would get tired in the second half", said assistant coach Steve Galloway. Umeå's young Norwegian talent June Pedersen replaced Ramona Bachman and scored her first two Danmallsvenskan goals.

AIK was predicted to reach at least a mid-table position after their impressive pre-season signings, but after five matches they were at the bottom of the table with only two points and one goal. The match against Göteborg didn't change this. Defensively their game worked ok, but they completely lack the power and the dedication in front of goal that Göteborg showed when they forced in the first goal in a penalty zone shuffle. And just to make things worse, their only goalscorer so far, Finnish star Laura Kalmari, had to leave the field with a thigh muscle rupture.

Falköping has successfully played Örebro and Linköping at home and for quite some time it seemed like they would manage to repeat this with Malmö. A very determined defensive with 10 players on their own half at all times controlled the first half, slowing down Malmö and making them mostly play sideways in the midfield. But apparently the guests solved the problem during the half-time, because in the second half Malmö managed to tear through Falköping's defense. Nigerian star Cynthia Uwak made her long awaited Damallsvenskan debut, subbing in with 20 minutes left as a winger, but couldn't do much to change her team's fate. Malmö got their fourth forward on the injury list (joining Helgadottir, Lundin and Östman) when Manon Melis had to leave with a sprained foot. Uwak commented after the match that she was not impressed by Malmö's national team players "I can already see that it won't be hard to score on Caroline Jönsson". Maybe some kind of retaliation for Hanna Ljungberg's likewise unimpressed comments about Uwak's fellow Nigerians Mmadu and Ikidi after Umeå's win over Linköping?

"Probably the worst first half the team has ever played", was Bälinge's coach's verdict and Qbik's Janne Jansson said that three of the four goals were goals that shouldn't occur in a premier division match. In other words, two teams that both had big problems getting their play to work and instead making lots of individual mistakes. They both seemed more scared of losing than eager to win.

Umeå conceded their first Damallsvenskan goal this season and almost also their first points. A late goal by Marta (who else?) saved the day for the champions, but Örebro were close not only in scoring but also in the play. they played close and aggressive and didn't give Umeå the space they are used to. Örebro's incoming coach Rikard Holmlund watched the match from the stands and was satisfied "but there are details to work on".

An entertaining match with plenty of both goodies and mistakes. Falköping's Sandra Krantz goal after less than 2 minutes, when she picks up a sloppy Hammarby pass and scores is a good example. The match is decided when Falköping's Elin Osbeck stops the ball with her hand and Hammarby gets a penalty kick.

Göteborg has been touted as one of the presumtive top sides this season, but didn't show much of that against Malmö. Malmö soon conquered the midfield and their tight defense, ordered to never let anyone have to deal with Lotta Schelin alone, shut of Göteborg's dangerous attack. At the same time they have both speed and power in their attack. The picture changed a bit towards the end of the match, when Göteborg's coach Martin Pringle ordered a 3-5-2 formation to win back the midfield, while Malmö's defense started to tire from their power-draining tactics. Schelin managed to escape twice, scoring once and forcing a good save from Caroline Jönsson once.

Finally Linköping's first win. Mmadu and Ikidi impressed for Linköping as they played their old club Qbik. Linköping had the match in their hands most of the 90 minutes, but there were a period after Qbik's second half goal when the match could have taken a turn. But a combination between Mmadu, Milbrett and Öqvist, the best goal of the match, gave Linköping back the initiative.

Umeå changed back to their old successfull 4-3-3, now with Hanna Ljungberg in the old Malin Moström position. It worked better than expected. Hanna's cooperation with Marta in the attack worked great and the Brazilian forward set up 3 of Hanna's 4 goals. Bälinge's rather offensive tactics led to what their home town paper called "a tea-party in the penalty zone" and made it easier than neccesary for Umeå.

Damallsvenskan round IV: Falköping wins again (!)

Weird. Falköping, a team I thought would be hard pushed to get any points at all, took their second win while Linköping, that everybody but me thought was a championship contender, could see their fourth straight defeat. On the other hand Malmö and Djurgården have already, predictably, stumbled against minnows and Göteborg goes from embarrasing away defeats to convincing home victories. Umeå still hasn't really joined in, but in spite of their inability to score internationally, I can see a repeat of last year's dominance.

Falköping continues to impress at home. An early penalty goal gave them the upper hand against an Örebro team, that didn't look completly focused. Defensive failures set up both Falköping's goals and it took more than the first half before Örebro could take the predicted grip on the match. Then it was too late. Falköping backed down and was content to guard their lead. "I was never worried", said Falköping coach Krister Engström.
The small town Falköping probably hasn't much else to offer a Sunday afternoon, but the home crowds of over 1,000 in both their matches so far is impressing.

"This is the best 90 minutes we've played so far", commented Göteborg's coach Martin Pringle. Coming from the 3-0 defeat against Örebro, it was a determinated Göteborg that showed up. The defense, where Jenny Engwall now seems to have accostumed to her new role in the centre, didn't allow Hammarby's attack anything, the midfield won almost everything and the attack was swift and efficient. Göteborg's speedy wingers Farfa and Andersson tore apart Hammarby's defense and Schelin and Lindén up front got a lot of space. Schelin now seems to be back at her old self, scoring 2 and setting up 2.

A match, that Sunnanå dominated while Qbik had big problems getting anything done against the guest's stoppers Marklund and Smith. Good defense by Qbik, and in particular by their keeper Yatrakis, still kept the score even until the last minutes. And Sunnanå isn't really that hot up front.. The deciding goal came after a corner-shot shuffle, where Yatrakis first seemed to have the ball under control and then not. She wanted a free-kick for being attacked by a Sunnanå player while holdning the ball, but the referee allowed the goal. Then her Greek temper, as she put it herself, kicked in. But her very vocal protests earned her nothing but a yellow card. Qbik's coach Jansson that the Sunnanå win wasn't unearned, but agreed with his keepers protests.

AIK, missing striker Laura Kalmari, showed up with a very defensive 4-5-1 and kept a very aggressive pressure on Malmö's attackers and midfield. The tactics worked, much with the help from great goalkeeping by Sofia Lundgren. Close to the end of the match it seemed like Linköping would earn their first point for the season. They had even been the best side for large parts of the match, with Caroline Seger and Josefine Öqvist looking good and forcing Bente Nordby in goal to great saves. Victoria Svensson's goal for Djurgården was soon followed by Josefine Öqvist's equaliser, where she dribbled through Djurgården's defense. But just 5 minutes from time, Linköping's defense lost guard of Emma Lundh at a free-kick and the young striker could convert Victoria Svensson's pass.
"This is so frustrating I can hardly explain it", sighed Linköping's coach Daniel Pettersson after the match. "We were playing a really great game, but it still didn't help."

Damallsvenskan round III: Umeå gives Linköping third straight defeat

Linköping - Umeå IK 0 - 2 (0-0)
Linköping: Jenny Olsson - Sara Larsson, Charlotte Rohlin, Marie-Louise Skålberg, Frida Östberg - Ann Westermark (74 Maria Karlsson), Caroline Seger, Petra Larsson (57 Faith Ikidi), Maureen Mmadu - Maria Aronsson (69 Tiffeny Milbrett), Josefine Öqvist
Umeå: Carola Söberg - Anna Paulsson, Johanna Frisk, Karolina Westberg, Maria Bergkvist - Elaine Moura, Lisa Dahlqvist (58 Hanna Ljungberg), Lise Klaveness (78 June Pedersen), Marta da Silva - Ma Xiaoxu (88 Erika Karlsson), Madelaine Edlund
Goals: 0-1 Hanna Ljungberg (66), 0-2 Madelaine Edlund (87)
Attendance: 3,021
A tight first half, where none of the sides managed to create much was followed by more of the same in the second. Still, Umeå managed to get the necessary goals. A nice cooperation between Hanna Ljungberg and Madeleine Edlund made the first (the Swedish FA's site gives the goal to Ljungberg, so I'm sticking with that, even if it looks like it was edlund from the video. And from what Hanna says) and young Norwegian June Pedersen served Edlund a great cross to head in shortly before the end. In front of a big crowd, that could have deserved a better match, defenders Frisk and Westberg impressed most in Umeå while hard-working Öqvist and Östberg looked good for Linköping. There were also two casualties from the match - Linköping's Petra Larsson had to leave with a muscle rupture in the thigh and will be out of action for a few weeks while Umeå's successfull striker Madelaine Edlund crashed with Linköping goalie Jenny Olsson just before the final whistle and had to limp off the pitch.
"When Linköping are not doing good", Umeå coach André Jeglertz said, "they have problems finding a rhytm in their play. And I think you could notice that tey felt the pressure meeting us, coming from two defeats". Linköping's Daneil Pettersson agreed somewhat, all the talk about gold, even if it hasn't been by themselves, has put a pressure on the players that they've had problems coping with. But he still regarded the match against Umeå as a big step forward compared with last week against Falköping. This while Jeglertz found relief in that they won in spite of never playing really good.

Goals: 0-1 Ariane Hingst (52), 1-1 Sanna Frostevall (79)
Attendance: 1,011
A disappointing result for Djurgården, that really thought they had the match in their hands. But scoring on Sunnanå can be a problem, the more when defenders Marklund and Smith has a good day. But finally Djurgården's pressure paid off Ariane Hingst could head in the ball, converting a Sara Thunebro corner-kick. But just 10 minutes from the end Sunnanå's fullback Sandra Berggren took an offensive run and managed to create her team's first corner. Anna Bodén placed the ball perfectly to a free-standing Sanna Frostevall.
Djurgården's coach Benny Persson was disappointed with the result: "We should have won this. We had three or four really good chances that we should have scored on", while Sunnanå celebrated the result like a win.

Damallsvenskan round III: Örebro bounce back

Kif Örebro - Kopperbergs/Göteborg FC 3 - 0 (0-0)
Örebro: Kristin Hammarström - Caroline Näfver, Stina Segerström, Sandra Linder, Ingrid Ericson - Elin Magnusson, Marie Hammarström, Lena Andersson, Hodan Siid-Ahmed - Pavlina Scasna, Hanna Pettersson (66 Emelia Erixon)
Göteborg: Maria Edman - Jenny Engwall, Maria Nilsson (76 Camilla Schelin), Maria Karlsson, Marlene Sjöberg - Sofie Andersson, Lisa Ek (67 Anna Andén), Salina Olsson, Emelie Farfa - Lotta Schelin, Sara Lindén
Goals: 1-0 Emelia Erixon (68), 2-0 Emelia Erixon (75), 3-0 Emelia Erixon (80)
Attendance: 785
Kif Örebro seemed to have recovered nicely from the pounding they recieved at Malmö a week ago. They were much tighter in defense and midfield, without really making any changes. Sara Linder in defense had been commissioned to shut out Göteborg's dangerous Lotta Schelin, who was not her usual self, still somewhat jet-lagged from her China trip last weekend. Örebro had the upper hand over a slow and uncreative Göteborg (injured Stensland visibly missing) most of the match, but didn't score until substitute forward Emelia Erixon came on with 25 minutes left. She ran through Göteborg's defense and scored three times in less than 15 minutes. She recieved good balls from Scasna and Näfver and was fast and accomplished enough to beat her defenders.

Falköping:

Goals:
1-0 Linda Blom (19), 2-0 Sanna Talonen (31)
Attendance: 616
Bälinge hadn't won a Damallsvenskan match since they played Sunnanå in June last year, a winless streak of 15 matches, so coach Zaine Söderlund was pleased and relieved after the final whistle. Falköping came from their surprise defeat of Linköping, but didn't have much to show for it in the first half. Bälinge's Mäkinen and Matinlassi dominated midfield and both goals came from well placed long passes. Linda Blom scored from a Petra Vaelma cross and Anne Mäkinen set up Sanna Talonen with a free kick. Veronika Svensson tended the goal for Bälinge in spite of her hurting finger, but didn't have much to do. In the second half Bälinge lost some of their forward movement and became more passive, something that could have proved fatal against a better team than Falköping.

Attendance: 509
The first 20 minutes the match was a fairly open game, but then Malmö proved heavier, stronger and more efficient. The turning point was Asthildur Helgadottir's 1-0 header from a Frida Nordin corner-shot. Malmö took over the match and the hosts very rarely managed to threaten Malmö's goal. Hammarby's young midfielder Lollo Fors had to leave the field with a groin injury and late in the first half Malmö's Dutch striker Manon Melis was downed in the penalty area. Helgadottir scored on the penalty, but Melis had to leave with knee pains. In the second half Malmö continued to press back Hammarby and Helgadottir was attributed a third goal following a shuffle in the box. After the match Helgadottir said she hadn't touched the ball, and the goal was given to Therese Sjögran. Late in the game Malmö's young defender Malin Levenstad used more force than necessary to stop Sara Johansson in the penalty area and got a red card, a decision a more experienced defender probably wouldn't have made, being 3 goals up and just minutes from the end. Hammarby's Annica Svensson executed the penalty to give Hammarby a consolation goal.

Qbik dominated the first half, but had problems findning the goal. Instead the decision would come in the second half, where AIK was much better and got the first goal. But Qbik used their counters well, first Anna Nilsson and then Damallsvenskan's youngest player, 15 years old Sanna Backman, found German striker Jennifer Meier in front of an open goal.
Qbik's coach commented that the win was very important for the team, a team that had to wait almost the entire season for their first win last year.

Damallsvenskan round II: Hanna Ljungberg scores again

Umeå's UEFA Women's Cup schedule made it necessary to move their 2nd round match to today, April 15. The remaining 5 matches will be played on Wednesday, April 18.

Umeå - Sunnanå 3 - 0 (2-0)
Umeå: Carola Söberg - Anna Paulson, Karolina Westberg, Johanna Frisk, Maria Bergkvist - Lisa Dahlqvist (70 Emelie Konradsson), Elaine, Lise Klaveness, Marta - Madeleine Edlund (75 Erika Karlsson), Ma Xiaoxu (62 Hanna Ljungberg)
Sunnanå: Åsa Berglund - Sandra Berggren, Hanna Marklund, Sanna Frostevall, Magdalena Esseryd - Kicki Wiklund, Anna Bodén, Carina Holmberg (72 Rebecca Smith), Alexandra Nilsson (46 Maja Johansson) - Lina Johansson (65 Emma Jonsson), Maria Nordbrandt.
Goals: 1-0 Lise Klaveness (26), 2-0 Marta (38 PK), 3-0 Hanna Ljungberg (63)
Attendance: 2,549
The new Umeå hosted local competitors Sunnanå and looked a lot like the old Umeå, brushing off their rivals just like they've been for several years now. The match showed very clearly just how much a key player Marta has become since Malin Moström moved from the pitch to the stands. From her new midfield position she probably won't be scoring so much this year, but all goals today had Marta's sign on them. A perfect ball to Lise Klaveness' forehead made the first goal. Then Hanna Marklund had to use excessive force to stop Marta inside the penalty area, and Marta executed the penalty-kick herself. And finally she served Hanna Ljungberg, just seconds after the Sweden striker entred as a second half substitute, the ball in a can't miss-position.
In spite of Marta's huge impact, Moström and Mäkinen are visibly missing in a midfield, that seems less powerfull than before, in spite of being made up by 4 players instead of 3 last year. Ma Xiaoxu shows promise, but still hasn't gelled in to the team. So when Hanna Ljungberg should get her minutes, it was Ma who had to leave, not her lesser known forward colleague Edlund.
The nice spring weather drew a good crowd to the Gammliavallen arena. One can only hope the conditions will be as good next weekend, when Arsenal LFC will be guesting. And with Marta as good as she is now and Hanna Ljungberg scoring again, the conditions for a good Umeå performance are looking bright.

Damallsvenskan Première

The first match-day the 2007 season gave us decent crowds and mostly expected winners, maybe except for Göteborg defeating Linköping, the most hyped team in the preseason predictions. Also some complaining over the inability from FIFA, UEFA and the Swedish Football Association to make a coordinated schedule for international games. Several starters were not with their clubs, but playing qualification matches for the 2007 World Cup, 2009 European Championship or 2008 U19 European Championship. Sunnanå and Falköping even rescheduled their would-be season opener, since Falköping was missing their main forward star Linnea Liljegärd while Sunnanå was missing defender Rebecca Smith (with New Zealand playing WWC qualifications) and three Swedish U19 players.

AIK - Djurgården 0 - 3 (0-1)
AIK: Sofia Lundgren - Madelene Göras, Frida Höglund, Sanna Valkonen, Linda Lekander - Lina Hedkvist, Jessica Julin, Freja Egebrant (85 Anna Bohlin), Madeleine Wedin (69 Danielle Wallander) - Sofia Simonsson, Laura Kalmari

Attendance: 1,263
In front of what is a new record home crowd for AIK's ladies, Djurgården showed that they in spite of AIK's ambitious signings still are better on as good as every position. Djurgården had problems getting their game, in particular their attack, to work in the first half, partly due to the alterations in the set-up they had to make, missing forward Emma Lundh (with Sweden U-19) and midfielder Ariane Hingst (with Germany) as they were. But Victoria Svenssonm, who was uncertain before the game, complaining over a sore foot, showed that she still is a world class finisher and Kicki Bengtsson, prepared to play anywhere but in goal, knows how to find her, setting up two of the goals. On the AIK side Laura Kalmari was dangerous, getting a goal disallowed for offside, Sanna Valkonen and Frida Höglund excellent in defense and Sofia Lundgren probably had more work than she usually had in a whole season with Umeå. Somewhat in contrast to the result, AIK was fairly pleased with their performance, the more since it is a new team while Djurgården's Benny Persson excused his team's performance with that it was a season opener. It will get better.

"It seems like the last day's turbulence in the club got to us at the field", commented a disappointed Malmö coach their narrow win. Malmö dominated the first half, when Bälinge's players seemed to have a big problems finding each other on the field, and Asthildur Helgadottir scored the winner in the penalty box shuffle that followed a Nera Smajic free-kick. Malmö's strong centre midfield with Sjögran and Fischer neutralised Bälinge's Mäkinen most of the time. But in the second half the game turned, with Bälinge pressuring against Malmö's goal. Bälinge's forward duo Talonen and Kent broke through the guest's defense more than once and Malmö's victory was only saved by some great goalkeeping from Caroline Jönsson. In the closing seconds of the match Bälinge's Annette Kent got the ball from Anne Mäkinen in a great position and everyone, including herself, thought it would be a goal. But Jönsson did a great save to tip it from the upper corner and out to a resultless cornerkick for Bälinge. Malmö's coach Pettersson was pleased with his team's attitude in the second half, they didn't play well but they kept fighting, while Bälinge's Zaine Söderlund was disappointed in the result and thought that his side should at least had one point.

With a brilliant Pavlina Scasna, Örebro had the necessary edge in the beginning of the match, creating lots of scoring opportunities. The match lost some of it's intensity as the time went, but Marijke Callebaut's direct free-kick in the 64th minute brought the intensity back in the match and the finish was a thrill, with Sara Johansson almost equalising in extratime.
More than anything else, this was Pia Sundhage's farewell match to Kif Ötrebro, and her players did their best to make it a farewell on a high note (literally a high note, as you will be aware if you check out the video clip). A visibly moved Sundhage got a big send-off before going to China for her new job as assistant national team coach.

An already from the beginning handicapped Linköping (long-time injury victims Hedvig Lindahl and Anna-Kaisa Rantanen missing) lost another key player when Sara Larsson limped off the pitch after only 10 minutes. The remaining Linköping defense had huge problems with Göteborg's Lotta Schelin and midfielders Stensland and Olsson won the battle with Linköping's Seger. Linköping had several chances to even the score, but both Öqvist and Milbrett missed good opportunities. Göteborg's defense is supposed to be their weakest link, but last minute signee Jenny Engwall, in an unaccustomed centre defense position, helped a lot.

Nobody had seriously expected anything else than the safe win for Umeå against favoured for relegation Qbik that it turned out to be. But Qbik were happy with keeping the score down in the first and with their first 20 second half minutes, when they actually were challening Umeå. Umeå, as usual, upped the score in the last minutes of the match when their superior strength and stamina settled the game. In Qbik goalkeeper Maria Yatrakis got most of the praise, but coach Janne Jansson pointed out that "she has to be this good in every match if we're going to avoid relegation". Umeå's Jeglertz was happy with the cooperation between forwards Ma and Edlund and that his defense managed to contain Qbik's counter attacks. And of course that Hanna Ljungberg played in a match for the first time in 5 months.

Four goals from Lotta Schelin took her past Victoria Svensson, Asthildur Helgadottir and Mafrta in the goal-scoring list to make her the scoring queen of the season with 21 goals. Schelin once again showed her importance for her team when she played a major patrt in 5 of their 6 goals. Bälinge, where Minna Mustonen was really dangerous in the attack, kept up fairly good with the visitors at least the first half of the match, but visibly missed their regular goalkeeper Maja Åström.

After a couple of really disasterous matches (against Qbik and Mallbacken), Hammarby got their act together and defeated newly crowned cup winners Linköping. Hammarby started with a defensive 4-5-1, but pretty soon took command over a surprisingly pale and inefficient Linköping, that maybe still were celebrating their cup win. Milbrett and Öqvist had several chances good opportunities and should have scored, but their missed opportunities reflected their teams performance. If Linköping had won, they would have passed by Djurgården, who were losing at Sunnanå, and won the 2nd place and a possible UEFA Cup spot next fall (that is, if Umeå wins the whole thing and Sweden gets a second team in the competition). There had been some speculation before the match, if Pia Sundhage really wanted to kick her former club Jitex out of Damallsvenskan. The match put an end to that kind of speculations. Örebro has been on a roll lately and didn't have much problems with Jitex. Dowling and Segerström in centre defense were flawless and Pavlina Scasna excelled in the attack.

Malmö kept up with Umeå the first 30 minutes and even had the best scoring chances. The two quick Umeå goals within a minute killed the match. Even if Malmö even after that managed to fight back, Umeå  dominated and showed why they are one of the best teams in the world. Faster play, better movement in the team, better delivered and better recieved passes - a great team machine but also better individual skills on almost every player, not just Marta (who was in an extraordinary form). For the first time you could hear a Malmö coach using the phrase "a valuable experience" after an Umeå match.

A big crowd came to watch the relegation deciding derby. Both teams knew what was at stake and it marked the play. Qbik's first goal came from a missed clearance of a Jennifer Meier cross. Mallbacken pressed for an equaliser (and needed a winning goal too, to avoid relegation), but great play from Maria Yatrakis in goal saved the day for Qbik. That, and substitute Linda Gull's late goal from a Jennifer Meier assist.

Djurgården had decided to keep Pedersen and Dalum Jensen with the team, instead of letting them join Denmark's national team on a tournament in Korea, because the last match would decide the second place in the league. And Djurgården were everywhere and won almost everything, except the goalscoring. Just like the Malmö match the weekend before, they had huge problems converting attacks to goals. Instead Sunnanå could score on fast counters, where Edlund showed both her speed and shooting skills. Finally Sara Thunebro managed to score on a direct free-kick and Laura Kalmari head in a beautifull pass from Kicki Bengtsson to equalise. But only minutes later Rebecca Smith (who had been great in defense the whole match) scored the final goal on a pass from Madelene Edlund. Still, Hammarby's victory over Linköping saved the day and the second place for Djurgården.

The match between the league's two dominant powers the last 4 years turned out to be a good one, fast and well played. Djurgården started as the better team, but already towards the end of the first half Umeå began to take control, even if the never dominated. Marta was behind both Umeå's goals, setting up Hanna Ljungberg for the first and scoring the second herself. It was a lot of Marta this match, working hard, winning balls on Umeå's own half and directing the attacks. Djurgården's coach Benny Persson noted after the match that his players had been too kind to Marta, giving her too much space. Some previous matches between the teams has shown that it is possible to shut Marta out of the game, but that requires a tougher attitude and harder work than Djurgården showed this time.

Linköping dominated big against a rather pale Bälinge and the win was thoroughly deserved. Bälinge's rookie goalkeeper Christina Lundholm got a rough first match as starting goalkeeper and the numbers probably wouldn't have been so big if injured Maja Åström had played.

The point with possession, somebody said, is that if the other team doesn't get the ball, they can't score. Malmö FF played that game with success. All the goals came from set pieces, but the key to Malmö's win was not letting Göteborg play their game. Malmö's coach Jörgen Petersson revealed that the key to disarm Göteborg's dangerous Lotta Schelin was not in marking Lotta (even if it was obvious that Malmö's Jenny Engwall had that task), but in cutting off Jessica Julin from the play. If there doesn't come any balls to Göteborg's midfield hub, she can't feed them to Schelin.

In their 20th Damallsvenskan match this season, Qbik finally managed to win. Anna Nilsson could pick up a misdirected kick from Hammarby's goalie Katarina Wicksell and score already 12 minutes from start. The early goal gave Qbik courage and even if Hammarby had most of the possession, Qbik created more forward. But mostly it was fighting to defend the lead for Qbik. Anna Nilsson could late in the game put in the insurance goal on a rebound from a Rebecca Jonsson shot and without that insurance Hammarby's late goal would have meant Qbik's 10th draw. Instead it became their first victory, enormously important in the relegation struggle.

Both teams knew the match could be decisive in the relegation struggle, and it showed. It was two nervous teams that walked on the pitch and it wasn't really the beautiful game they played. A lot of long balls without any address and missed passes from both teams. Mallbacken still managed to get a grip on the match during the first half, but it was Jitex that scored. Katie Eriksson - Jitex untiring attacker - ran through Mallbacken's defense and fired a shot that Carola Söberg in goal couldn't hold. Jitex midfielder Amelie Olausson got a shot on it that hit both goalposts before it landed in goal. Olausson played only her second match this season. The 30 year old, who is the club's fitness trainer, had decided to quit playing after contributing to Jitex promotion last year but been persuaded by the coaches to return to the field. After the goal the match turned and Jitex had most of the scoring chances, including a penalty kick from Leah Robinson, that goalie Söberg caught.

KIF Örebro has never lost to Sunnanå during the 4 years they've played in Damallsvenskan. Not this time either. Sunnanå, missing Hanna Marklund to a yellow card suspension,  played a tough physical game but had problems getting anything done in their offensive third of the field. Örebro's Marie Hammarström and Pavlina Scasna made the difference. Hammarström scored directly from a free-kick and Scasna was instrumental in the fast counter Örebro started after a Sunnanå corner-kick and made it an easy finish for Louise Östman.

With Jenny Engwall out on yellow card suspension, Malmö had to field yet another teenager in defense, Lina Rehov. Still, the defense did their job well (much thanks to Caroline Jönsson, though) but Malmö's much more merited midfielders got outplayed by Örebro's Lena Andersson and Marie Hammarström. Malmö produced very little forward while Örebro's Scasna once again showed how dangerous she is up front. Örebro's Sundhage was pleased with her team's first ever point against Malmö, while Malmö's Jörgen Petersson thought that his midfield played more nervous and cautious than usual, partly because of the young defense line. He also repeated what he has said several times before; people are having too high expectations on his team, paying more attention to the club's name than to the young and unexperienced squad. A player like Malin Levenstad, 17 years old who had never started for the first team before this season, is replacing Denise Reddy, who had hundreds of matches in Damallsvenskan.

The inauguration of Kopparbergs/Göteborg's new home arena, Valhalla, attracted soccer profiles, local celebrities, a lot of youth teams and enough regular punters to make the small arena look almost sold out. Umeå took control of the match from the start, and when Hanna Ljungberg scored a typical Hanna Ljungberg goal (set up be Lise Klaveness) making it 0-2 already after some 20 minutes you could hear a big sigh from the crowd "Oh no, not one of those games again". But Göteborg tried to be patient, hold on to the ball when they got it and build their attacks carefully. It paid off when Sara Lindén managed to reduce both to 1-2 and 2-3, partly maybe because of a somewhat unexperienced Umeå defense (Maria Bergkvist injured and Karolina Westberg with a virus was missing). In the second half Göteborg even managed to create more situations in front of goal than Umeå did. "Unnecessary exciting", commented Umeå's coach André Jeglertz. It also seems like Umeå is matching their players very carefully in Damallsvenskan: 45 minutes Hanna Ljungberg and 30 minutes Marta seems almost like just enough exercise to keep them in shape for the UEFA cup matches.

The match was originally planned to be televised. But Umeå's early championship win made TV4, that owns the broadcasting rights, schedule a more interesting promotion-struggle match from the men's second tier. The network offered to show the match, if they could move kick-off 2 hours. Göteborg declined, since it by then wasn't possible to change everything around the inauguration ceremony.

Djurgården was in an extraordinary good mood and out-played Qbik over 90 minutes. Qbik didn't have a single shot on goal in the entire match. Still, partly helped by good work from Maria Yatrakis in goal, they were only two goals down after the first half and came out to the second determined to work their way back inte the game. But it only took Victoria Svensson 30 seconds to find Anne-Marie Norlin unmarked by Yatrakis left goal-post. After that, Djurgården continued to play a fast, aggressive game and Victoria Svensson sealed the match with a 10 minute hat-trick against a very tired Qbik.

After a rather uneventfull first half with a lot of playing mistakes from both sides, Hammarby was the team that came out more aggressive and determined in the second. Emma Lundh, one of Hammarby's teenage talents, scored her first Damallsvenskan goal after great foot-work in the panalty area, leaving two defenders behind her. After Sara johansson made it 2-0, Hammarby dominated the match with a long row of attacks.

After a tight, but not always that well played match with few scoring opportunities, Mallbacken could force in a tieing goal in the last minutes of the match and win an important point in the relegation struggle. Mallbacken, that had to start without their midfield engine Erla Arnadottir (playing in USA for Iceland's national team), ran a lot and worked hard but not always very contructive in their effort to equalise Bälinge's early lead. Finally Bälinge's keeper Maja Åström was knocked down in a duel with two Mallbacken players and Kristie Swaving put the ball in an open goal. Åström, who injured her hand in the encounter, was very upset with the referee after the match.
Bälinge's point finally put them out of even a theoretical risk of relegation, 10 points away from the relegation line with 3 matches left to play.

Attendance: 2,078
With a comfortable 3-0 win, Umeå secured the championship 4 matches from the end of the season. Örebro's coach Pia Sundhage commented that Umeå really are too good for the rest of the teams in Damallsvenskan. "It's really not good for the league with such a superiority for one team." But on the other hand people has been saying that since Öxabäck (6 championships in the 70's and 80's) dominated.

Umeå took control of the match from the start, determined to decide the championship. Örebro managed to hold back Umeå the first 30 minutes. The first goal was very much a trademark Umeå goal. Örebro's Dowling, on one of her offensive excursions, lost the ball to Umeå's Valkonen, who passed it on to Moström, who continued forward and gave a great pass to Marta, who had escaped her defender and could score undisturbed. All this in less than 10 seconds from Valkonen's break to Marta's goal. Shortly after Marta scored directly from a corner kick and the rest was mostly a wait for the championship celebrations.

Match-day 18: Sara Johansson leads Hammarby to victory

Attendance: 502
Hammarby's Sara Johansson was tearing huge holes in Bälinge's defense, where usually reliable Fanta Cooper and Lina Andersson probably played their worst match so far this season. The first goal came when Bälinge's defense managed to stear the ball in own goal, trying to clear up after a powerfull Sara Johansson shot. Bälinge managed to equalise on a fast counter, but Hammarby continued to dominate. After Louise Fors' penalty goal Bälinge tried to make it a tie again, making offensive substitutions. But Hammarby's Johansson killed the match when she dribbled through Bälinge's defense and scored alone with Maja Åström in a nice solo performance.
