In Sunnanå there is talk about "the Tiffeny factor" and she admits that the team looks much better now than when she joined "but that's not because of me. The entire team trains hard and wants to develop." Over all she is very pleased with her time with the team and that they wants her to come back "I like it very much with the team and the coach and I get just the kind of freedom on the pitch that makes me a good player."
Milbrett will return back to USA next week after first spending some time as a tourist in Stockholm and watching "my new friend Hanna Marklund playing for Sweden against my old friend Cristina Sinclair and Canada". She will return to Sunnanå in August.

QBIK signs Jennifer Meier
Dave Mosson, QBIK's coach, talks in a five minute interview with a local TV station about his team and himself. He says that the season so far has been a big learning experience, and that they will do better when the league restarts in July. Jennifer Meier's experience will be a big asset for the club. Mosson, who is a big local profile in football, has never coached a women's side before. He says that at this level the main difference is that for men football is a job while women needs to find other motivation than financial compensation. Team spirit, finding friends and spending time together in the team becomes much more important.

Anna Nilsson scored 32 goals for QBIK last season in the 1st division. Not until the sixth match came her first Damallsvenskan goal and QBIK's first win. QBIK showed guts and determination when they managed to win the game in spite of Själevad's early goal from a penalty kick, and coach Dave Mosson mentioned especially midfielder Lisa Mellberg.

Mallbacken's decision to try a bold 4-3-3 against Sunnanå didn't work out at all the first half. The Mallbacken players semed marked by their row of defeats and played without confidence. In the second half Sunnanå seemed to relax too much and when Mallbacken's icelandic midfielder Erla Arnadóttir reduced to 1-2 the game turned around. Arnadóttir, new with the team, seems to finally have found her playmaker position.

Hammarby took an early lead from a corner kick, but AIK managed to stand up pretty well in the first half, showing a good passing play. In the second it wasn't enough and when Salina Olsson scored Hammarby's third goal on a bicycle kick, her 8th in 6 games, it was a done deal. Hammarby's coach En Perlskog is very satisfied with his team's performance so far, in 4th place going into the break.

Just an hour after the UEFA Women's Cup final you could watch this match, and it looked much the same. A great Umeå show the first half with 3 goals in the first 20 minutes. Malin Moström and Marta impressed greatly and Linköping didn't have much to show for their 5 national team players. Except goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl, who did a couple of great saves. Slower pace in the second, but still a safe Umeå win.

Two teams with strong defense against each other, which didn't give that many scoring opportunities. Emma Stålhammar scored a great goal from distance to give Malmö the upper hand. Örebro pushed forward in the second and dominated that half, but their forwards got stuck in Malmö's defense. "We were playing to complicated", Örebro coach Pia Sundhage explained, "trying to get the ball inside the box instead of just taking the long shot, so we didn't get to as many finishes as our advantage should have given us". Malmö's Anders Johansson praised his defense and satisfied that they managed to get a good hold on Kristine Lilly.
This was the last match for Örebro's americans Kristine Lilly, Kate Markgraf and Mary Frances Monroe. It's a 50/50 chance they'll come back after the break, says both Sundhage and Markgraf

Djurgården/Älvsjö lose Women's Cup to Potsdam
Turbine Potsdam: Nadine Angerer - Britta Carlson, Inken Becher, Sonja Fuss - Navima Omilade, Ariane Hingst, Jennifer Zietz, Viola Odebrecht - Anja Mittag, Conny Pohlers (74 Cristiane), Petra Wimbersky (79 Karolin Thomas).
Djurgården/Älvsjö: Maja Åström - Helen Fagerström (46 Helen Curtsdotter), Jane Törnqvist, Malin Nykvist, Sara Thunebro (46 Linda Lekander) - Ann-Marie Norlin (53 Anna Hall), Elin Ekblom, Linda Fagerström - Venus James, Victoria Svensson, Kicki Bengtsson
Goals: Petra Wimbersky 1-0 (2), Conny Pohlers 2-0 (9), Kicki Bengtsson 2-1 (10), Conny Pohlers 3-1 (16)
Attendance: 8,664
Turbine Potsdam attack impressed a lot in the first half with a good pace and well thought and executed passes with mostly just one or two touches. Djurgården/Älvsjö showed themselves vulnerable on the wings, where their defenders often got turned by Potsdam's Mittag and Wimbersky (Djurgården substituted both their wingbacks at halftime). Their proposed 4-3-3 soon (as so often happens with 4-3-3 tactics) soon looked more like 4-5-1 with Victoria Svensson alone at top, which is not her best position. At halftime they changed to a more conservative 4-4-2 which stabilized their defense, but didn't help much in the attack. The kind of scoring chances that they managed to create in the Stockholm leg of the final didn't show this time.
All in all a really great performance by Turbine Potsdam while Djurgården/Älvsjö disappointed both themselves and their fans, just as they have in the Damallsvenskan, where they will spend the break on a modest 6th place.

For the first time in his life Hammarby coach En Perlskog fielded a defense line with five players, and sometimes it looked even more. Djurgården/Älvsjö owned the ball most of the match, but had problems penetrating Hammarby's defense. The set-up made for a pretty boring game, both goals came from set pieces, but it worked for Hammarby. Djurgården's play overall not looking good for the upcoming Potsdam game.
The meagre 242 crowd at the stadium cann partly be explained by the fact that Hammarby's and Djurgården's men played their derby at the same time in Stockholm.

Linköping opened strong, as so often before, and Örebro never came into the match in the first half. In the halftime break Örebro decided to go for a more direct type of play, but it took until the last 20 minutes before it began to pay off. Two long passes Kristine Lilly reduced the deficit to 1 goal and Örebro throwed everything into attack in extratime and they managed to force in the equalizer on a defenders mistake. Really good show by Lilly, who hasn't been that impressive until now, and a really disappointed Linköping again lost what seemed a safe lead. "We had complete control of the match, then the last five minutes we played like little girls."

Attendance: 1,382
Djurgården/Älvsjö had their three first forward choices in the stands (Victoria Svensson and Sara Johansson injured, Laura Kalmari not available since she's already played UEFA Cup matches for Umeå), and suffered a lot in the attack. Potsdam had most of the possession and showed a good passing play while Djurgården/älvsjö relied on defense and counters, where Kicki Bengtsson created a lot of dangerous opportunities but never managed to score, partly because of great play from Potsdam's keeper Nadine Angerer, but also because Bengtsson, as she herself commented, lacked edge in her finishes "It's several years since I played forward last." Djurgårdens other attacker Venus James, probably out of her sick-bed a little to early, seemed tired and uninspired. Conny Pohlers exploited a couple of defensive mistakes to get Potsdam the lead, but not until Mittag's great shot from the edge of the area they seemed to get the upper edge. Djurgården/Älvsjö, though disappointed, took comfort in the idea that if Potsdam can score twice away, so can they next weekend.

Tight defense from the home team made it hard for Umeå to get good scoring position. Of their about 25 shots at goal the vast majority was shot from safe outside the penalty area. In the beginning Sunnanå did surprisingly good contesting Umeå for posession of the midfield, but as the match went along Umeå dominated more and more and Madde Edlund and Tiffeny Milbrett became very lonely in the attack Hanna Marklund (player of the match) in Sunnanå's defense seemed untroubled by the injury she recieved in the Linköping match, but had to leave the pitch in the second half to avoid making the injury worse. Umeå was as a whole the much better side with a very offensive Moström and Marta, who was behind much of Umeå's attack but seldom came to any dangerous finishes.

Mallbacken managed to play a good game against Djurgården/Älvsjö, better play, daring to keep the ball and try to build the attacks rather than just opting for the long ball. Spirits are high in Sunnanå after defeating the league leaders Linköping. Hanna Marklund was named player of the match for her team to which she comments: "We had to play a lot of defense, so I got a lot to do". One of the deciding points for Sunnanå was the player moves in halftime: forward Mirre Marklund came in for her sister Carro and took Milbrett's place in the attack, while Tiffeny was placed in a midfield position. "Our forward momentum became much better after that", says coach Kega Isaksson.

Sunnanå's coach "Kega" Isaksson had before the match stated that they had respect for Linköping, but that he was certain that they could pull off a much better game thn they did in their narrow defeat to KIF örebro the last match. And Tiffeny Milbrett had in no uncertain terms told the team that everyone was entitled to the occational bad day, but not fighting was not accepted. In the beginning of the Linköping match you couldn't tell if the pep talk had worked. Linköping opened strong and had 4 corners in the first five minutes. Maria Karlsson scored on a Josefine Öqvist pass and Josefine healed in a goal of her own. Sunnanå's Carina Holmberg kept them in the match with a volley from an unsuccessfull Linköping clearing attempt, but Linköping still looked like the much better team. But in the second half Linköping began to be pressured by the physically stronger Sunnanå, with Tiffeny Milbrett moved down to the midfield, and their 4-3-3 began to look more like 4-4-2. Sunnanå managed to capitalize on their playing advantage to equalise and finally score the winning goal - a ball intercepted by Tiffeny Milbrett, who made an opening pass to Madelaine Edlund who didn't make any mistakes one on one with Hedvig Lindahl. Sunnanå's captain Hanna Marklund had to leave the pitch by the end of the game with a bleedning thigh, but was still happy and convinced she'll be playing again this weekend.

"We were standing still a bit too much in the first half", Umeå coach Andrée Jeglertz excused himself after the 7-0 win, "but we had a good match and did some good looking goals". Even if there are more competetive teams in Damallsvenskan this year, there is still a big difference between Umeå and a newcomer like AIK. Things are beginning to look dire for AIK, but coach Christer Söderberg says that they were never relying on getting points from the upper half teams they've played so far.

Mallbacken - Djurgården/Älvsjö 0-2 (0-1)
Mallbacken:
Djurgården/Älvsjö: Maja Åström - Helene Fagerström, Malin Nykvist, Jane Törnqvist, Sara Thunebro - Ann-Marie Norlin - Linda Fagerström, Elin Ekblom, Kristin Bengtsson - Marijke Callebaut, Laura Kalmari
Goals: Elin Ekblom 1-0 (43), Laura Kalmari 2-0 (90, PK)
Red card: Therese Stolpe, Mallbacken
Attendance: 689
With three attackers absent (Johansson, Svensson and James) Djurgården/Älvsjö had big problems finding their way through Mallbacken's fighting defense. A long shot be midfielder Ekblom gave them the lead by the end of the first half and a penalty kick that Kalmari converted at the end of the second was probably less than expected by the Women's Cup finalists.
Hammarby - QBIK 3-2 (1-1)
Hammarby: Kattis Wicksell - Hanna Olsson, Jossan Christensen, Annelie Norén, Tanja Meidal - Elin Hären, Jennie Jonsson, Christina Forssell, Linda Forsberg - Salina Olsson (88 Lisa Arnell), Jessica Landström (45 Louise Fors).
QBIK:
Goals: Salina Olsson 1-0 (8), Jenny Hallstenson 1-1 (16), Salina Olsson 2-1 (56), Jenny Hallstenson 2-2 (62), Salina Olsson 3-2 (78)
Attendance: 312
Jenny Hallstensson's two equlizers almost gave QBIK their first Damallsvenskan point, against the run of the play, while Salina Olsson's hat trick in front of national team assistant coach Thomas Dennerby probably put her back in the running for a spot on the Euro squad.

Damallsvenskan turnover grows rapidly
Umeå IK is the by far biggest club financially with a close to SEK 10 millions turnover, but Djurgården/Älvsjö is growing fastest, doubling their 2003 incomes to reach SEK 3,7 millions.
Other interesting figures: UEFA Women's Cup is a big source of income - if you reach the final. Umeå made SEK 1 million, while Djurgården/Älvsjö and Malmö FF that also participated in the tournament last year didn't make any money. The average compensation for a Damallsvenskan player was SEK 24,000 - more than twice as much as the year before.

New and longer article published today, tuesday. The finalization of Rech's transfer, that was discussed already this winter, was delayed because she had to work things out with the german armed forces, where she is employed. In the end she had to resign from the armed forces altogether, but she hopes it will be possible for her to come back. Sunnanå's management says they are very happy that things worked out. Bianca Rech will mean a lot to the team.

Kopparbergs/Göteborg were disappointed with yet another draw, the more since they had the upper hand and should have converted more of their opportunities.

A big relief seems to be the most common feeling with Umeå's players after the 1-0 win over Djurgården/Älvsjö. Hanna Ljungberg admits that they were very tense before the match, having lost 4 matches of 5 to Djurgården/Älvsjö last season, and it showed in the match where both sides played a restrained and defensive game. From Djurgården/Älvsjö the view is that a (goalless) draw would have been a result that better corresponded to the events on the field.

KIF Örebro was the better team, particularly in the midfield with Mary Frances Monroe and Marie Hammarström, and made good use of the set pieces. But Sunnanå is extremely dangerous up front and Tiffeny Milbrett is gold worth for the club.

Criminally boring! is the verdict from a local columnist after the QBIK-Mallbacken match. And the players admit it wasn't any great entertainment they gave. QBIK coach Dave Mosson once again wants to emphazise that the team needs strengthening. "I don't think the board realised how big the step is from 1st division to Damallsvenskan".

A one-sided game, where almost all of the play was on Hammarby's half of the field. Hammarby's coach En Perlskog said that Malmö, against all predictions, seemes to have their best team in several years. Malmö showed a varied and efficient play with the cooperation between Therese Sjögran and Formiga as their main force. Players and coach alike were extremely pleased with both result and play and coach Anders Johansson mentioned particulary the defense line, reconstructed after national team players Sara Larsson and Karolina Westberg left the club last year.

A defensive, maybe overcautious, approach from both sides, that seemed more bent on not losing than on winning, made for a fairly uneventfull match. Towards the end of the game both sides tried to find more attacking opportunities and shortly before the end Mallabacken substitution Linda Wallin found the goal.

With a 1 degree temperature and snow in the air the conditions for a good game and a big crowd could have been better. KIF Örebro started best, scored from a set piece already after 4 minutes and dominated the midfield play with Mary Frances Monroe playing an essential role. Tiffeny Milbrett and Madeleine Edlund were dangerous in Sunnanå's attack, but Örebro's defense managed to contain them most of the time. Örebro's two first goals came off set pieces where Sunnanå's defense should have been better marking. In the second half Sunnanå started to play wider and getting crosses in behind Örebro's defense line. This worked out and when the game reached a 3-3, after a Tiffeny Milbrett hat trick draw in would not have been an unfair result. But Örebro's youngster Lisa Dahlqvist headed in the last goal from a corner kick.

A tough and tight match, more exciting than entertaining, where Djurgården/Älvsjö came out defeated for the second game in a row, something that's never happened the club before. With Victoria Svensson still on the injury list Djurgården's attack was somewhat handicapped with a lone Sara Johansson running on long passes. On the other hand Umeå's attack had big problems dealing with Djurgården's defense, where Jane Törnqvist probably strengthened her chances for a national team spot a good deal. Umeå's winning goal came off a Malin Moström penalty kick, awarded after Sara Thunebro handballed a shot from Anne Mäkinen.

Once again a direct free-kick from Therese Kapstad saved the day for Själevad. Själevad was much under pressure the first half and their defense, where brasilian Marina played the full match only 24 hours after she arrived in Sweden, had a lot of work keeping Göteborg's Lotta Schelin and Heidi Kackur from goal. Lotta Schelin was the big player of the match.

Safe win over Holland for Sweden

Goals: 1-0 Sara Larsson (29), 2-0 Öqvist (32)
Attendance: 4023
Sweden dominated throughout the match (something like 60-40 in possession, and I think 6-0 in corners), but had sometimes problems playing through the deep dutch defense. They also didn't manage to keep up the pressure the whole match, but had a couple of really good periods in the middle of the first half and towards the end of the match. The first goal was from a well placed corner kick by Malin Andersson that Sara Larsson headed in with the back of her head. The second emanated from a misunderstanding between Holland's goalkeeper Wissink and a defender that resulted in a loose ball that the always alert Josefine Öqvist placed in goal.

Injury-stricken OBIK looking abroad for reinforcements
QBIK's neighbour club Mallbacken is also looking for reinforcements, mainly to replace injured midfielder Frida Broström, but they will mostly be looking for domestic players.
QBIK might already have found a new player. Lisa Mellberg, who after contributing to the clubs promotion to Damallsvenskan decided to leave the team and focus on her job, is training with the club again. She says she's much more motivated now than she was last winter, but has not yet decided on if she will take up playing again.

Both Denmark and Sweden had before the match stated that this match was to try out players for the final European Championship squads. Both teams started without several of their big names, which seemed to effect Denmark the most, having less depth in their squad than Sweden. Sweden dominated the first half, playing with high pressure and mostly killing Denmark's attempts already in the midfield. Sweden played something that looked more like 4-2-3-1, with Josefine Öqvist (enthusiastic, running on everything but need to be sharper in the finish) at the top, then the announced 4-4-2. Hanna Ljungberg seemed to have some defensive assignments, mainly trying to disturb the communication between the danish defense and midfielder Louise Hansen, which worked out fine but made her rather invisible in the forward play. In the second Denmark subbed in first team players like Merete Pedersen and Cathrine Paaske Sørensen, and the match became more even. Still very few danish dangerous shots. Positive from the swedish side was Lotta Schelin as technical winger and Nilla Fischer teaming up with Malin Moström in the centre mid. And for you who doesn't read swedish: it's the danish national team coach who calls Lotta Schelin "a female Zlatan".
