Swedish Cup round 5: Sunnanå defeats Djurgården on penalties

The eight matches in the fifth round of the Swedish Cup was played Tuesday evening. Predicted wins in most matches, but the three where Damallsvenskan sides faced each other became close affairs. Sunnanå - Djurgården even had to go through a ridiculous amount of penalties.
If you didn't know this already, the Swedish Cup is not a very big deal in Sweden. Neither the men's nor the women's cup tournaments are anything close to as important as they are in e.g. Norway, Germany or England. Subsequently, almost all damallsvenskan teams rests important players for cup matches, even when they are playing other Damallsvenskan sides. The rethoric is that the cup is important, and most of the coaches were displeased with their teams performance. Still, when you use your back-up goalie and decides to bring a bunch of 16 years olds from the development team, you really can't expect your players to give it their all.

AIK - Qbik 3 - 2 (1-2)

Goals: 0-1 Jeniffer Meier (8), 1-1 Sofia Simonsson (25), 1-2 Jeniffer Meier (36), 2-2 Daniella Wallander (54), 3-2 Camilla Ulander-Nilsson (60)
AIK hosted Qbik, a team they lost to in their away meet in Damallsvenskan and still decided to rest half their first team. "We've been playing three matches a week lately, and just had to give some players a rest. And it seemed like Qbik rested some of theirs too", coach Jörgen Zetterström commented. Since both sides handicapped themselves, it became a fairly close match that could have been won by either side.

IFK Värnamo - Linköpings FC 0 - 4 (0-0)
Goals: 0-1 Maria Aronsson (57), 0-2 Kosovare Asllani (60), 0-3 Tiffeny Milbrett (61), 0-4 Tiffeny Milbrett (84)
1st division side Värmano played good defense against Linköping, but finally had to concede, three goals in four minutes decided the match. Plus Värnamo's complete inability to challenge Linköping's goal.
Tiffeny Milbrett left Sweden on a high note, scoring twice in her last match before travelling back over the Atlantic. Linköping rested national team players Rohlin, Seger and Öqvist.

Bälinge - Hammarby IF 1 - 0 (1-0)
Goals: 1-0 Linda Sembrandt (31)
Bälinge had three players with Finland's national team and rested another three starters and still got a somewhat lucky win. They scored on their only real opportunity in the first half and created even less in the second. Hammarby, resting Sara Johansson, had most possession but huge problems getting through Bälinge's defense.

Hägglunds IoFK - Umeå IK 0 - 12 (0-7)
Goals: 0-1 Madeleine Edlund (1), 0-2 Ma Xiaoxu (20), 0-3 June Pedersen (22), 0-4 Elaine (24), 0-5 Ma Xiaoxu (29), 0-6 June Pedersen (35), 0-7 Madeleine Edlund (39), 0-8 Lisa Dahlkvist (50), 0-9 Lise Klaveness (65), 0-10 Linnea Ågren (70), 0-11 Linnea Ågren (81), 0-12 Own goal (90)
2nd division side Hägglunds is most known for Malin Moström and Frida Östberg, who both started their careers there. Umeå rested Marta and Hanna Ljungberg, but the team started on full throttle and never slowed down. 16 year old Linnea Ågren from the development team, who was subbed in during the second half and scored two goals, was the attraction of the match.

IF Norvalla - Kopparbergs/Göteborg 1 - 6 (0-4)
Goals: 0-1 Sara Lindén (6), 0-2 Frida Svensson (11), 0-3 Sara Lindén (30), 0-4 Sofie Andersson (44), 0-5 Frida Svensson (68), 0-6 Frida Svensson (76)
Göteborg rested Lotta Schelin, Maria Karlsson, Marlene Sjöberg and Jenny Engwall, but Norvalla still didn't have a prayer, much because of Göteborg's strong midfield. 17 year old Frida Svensson played on Lotta Schelin's position and scored four goals, Johanna Almgren played 20 minutes in her first match after her injury almost a year ago.

Karlskrona FF - LDB FC Malmö 0-2 (0-3)
Goals: 0-1 Emma Stålhammar (34), 0-2 Emma Stålhammar (35), 0-3 Manon Melis (81)
Karlskrona FF plays in the 3rd disision but has 42 straight victories since the club started in the 5th two years ago. Several of their players have Damallsvenskan experience (IF Trion 2002-2003). Malmö's Icelandic players Helgadottir and Stefansdottir were playing European Championship qualifications while Caroline Jönsson, Nilla Fischer and Therese Lundin rested. Instead they used several players from the development team.

Sunnanå SK - Djurgården 10 - 9 (3-3 ET, 2-2 FT, 0-1)
Goals: 0-1 Victoria Svensson (28), 1-1Hanna Marklund (47), 2-1 Josefin Johansson (53), 2-2 Kristin Bengtsson (81 PK), 3-2 Lisa Renberg (104), 3-3 Victoria Svensson (108)
Sunnanå and Djurgården played a draw last time they met and both teams attempts to give a handicap to the other side just seemed to make this match even closer. But Djurgården made smaller changes from their normal set-up (Nordby on national team assignment, Dalum and Bengtsson starting on the bench) than Sunnanå, that put a huge group of teenagers on the field. Strangely this seemed to benefit Sunnanå and not Djurgården. 16 years old Emelie Marklund made her debut for Sunnanå's full team and scored the deciding penalty.

Tyresö FF - KIF Örebro 0 - 1 (0-1)
Goals: 0-1 Keeley Dowling (35)
A pretty much full Kif Örebro team, missing only the Hammarström sisters, narrowly defeated 2nd division side Tyresö. Coach Holmlund, who chose to put Keeley Dowling in the attack together with Emelia Erixon, was probably pleased with his unorthodox use of the merited defender Dowling, but disappointed with the match: "A really bad 2nd division match."

National team: Roster for Hungary and Romania matches announced

Hanna Ljungberg, Sara Larsson and Therese Lundin are all back on the national team squad after injuries. The squad is for both the away game in Romania on June 16 and the only home match this year, against Hungary June 20.

Goalkeepers:
Caroline Jönsson, LDB FC Malmö
Sofia Lundgren, AIK

Defenders:
Hanna Marklund, Sunnanå SK
Anna Paulson, Umeå IK
Sara Larsson, Linköpings FC
Charlotte Rohlin, Linköpings FC
Stina Segerström, Kif Örebro
Sara Thunebro, Djurgården
Karolina Westberg, Umeå IK
Frida Östberg, Linköpings FC

Midfielders:
Nilla Fischer, LDB FC Malmö
Frida Nordin, LDB FC Malmö
Caroline Seger, Linköpings FC
Lotta Schelin, Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC
Therese Sjögran, LDB FC Malmö
Josefine Öqvist, Linköping FC

Forwards:
Sara Johansson, Hammarby IF
Hanna Ljungberg, Umeå IK
Therese Lundin, LDB FC Malmö
Victoria Svensson, Djurgården

It could be noted that the division in midfielders and forwards isn't really as strict as it seems from my list. Fischer, Nordin, Seger and Sjögran are pretty much exclusively midfield, but Schelin and Öqvist can just as likely show up in the attack. And all attackers except Lundin has played in the midfield for their clubs, more or less frequently. Malmö and Linköping dominates the roster with 5 players each and my tip is that at least half the team will come from those clubs when the matches start.

Milbrett returns to America, White to Sweden

After the contracted 8 rounds in Damallsvenskan for Linköping FC, Tiffeny Milbrett returns to America to join Vancouver Whitecaps in the W-league. The club wishes her luck and hopes to see her in Linköping's blue outfit again, maybe already this fall.
Linköping:

Just like her former US U21 teammate Keeley Dowling (Örebro), Kacey White was dropped from the US national team residency camp recently. The twice capped midfielder now returns to her 2006 club Bälinge, where she is eagerly awaited as a replacement for the finnish striker Sanna Talonen, who will leave for USA (college) in a few weeks. White will stay with Bälinge for at least the next 7 Damallsvenskan rounds, until July 11. Kacey White was generally considered Bälinge's best player 2006.

Damallsvenskan Round VIII: AIK's first win

The better teams in damallsvenskan often claims that they know how Umeå can be defeated, and it always involves getting close and physical with Umeå's attackers. Djurgården's Benny Persson is one of those and he has also managed to pull it off a couple of times. But it is much easier to know than to do. This time it was Göteborg's management that talked widely about how Umeå's foreign players gets out of balance and starts whining when things doesn't work out for them. This launched a newspaper quarrel between Umeå and Göteborg, where Andrée Jeglertz actually admitted that Marta used to have this problem, but no longer has. It's hard to say if the public row between the clubs had any influence on the match result, but at least we got fun headlines for a while.

AIK - Falköpings KIK 2 - 0 (2-0)

AIK: Sofia Lundgren - Linda Lekander, Sanna Valkonen, Frida Höglund, Madelene Göras - Anna Lundin (65 Sofia Simonsson), Jessica Juhlin, Madelene Wedin, Ingrid Bohlin - Nazanin Vaseghpanah (83 Lina Hedqvist), Freja Egerbrant
Falköping: Malin Andersson - Nettan Hofling, Karin Neuman, Elin Osbeck, Emma Eriksson, Sandra Krantz (70 Josefin Alfsson), Madeleine Tegström, Camilla Sanderheim, Sofia Fröjdstedt (83 Charlotte Abrahamsson), Linnea Liljegärd, Cynthia Uwak
Goals: 1-0 Jessica Julin (16), 2-0 Nazanin Vaseghpanah (24)
Attendance: 564
If AIK was ever going to win a match this season, this was the best opportunity. Home match against the presumed weakest side in the league. But it wasn't easy. Falköping started strong and impressed, pressuring high in the midfield and a pacy attacking play. But AIK, with Valkonen and Höglund playing the main parts, defended skilfully. And after 15 minutes Nazanin Vaseghpanah escaped her defender and found team captain Jessica Julin with a pass. Julin who had been left unnoticed by Falköping's defense had no problems scoring. Less than 10 minutes later a similar defense error allowed Vaseghpanah to head in a cross from Anna Lundin. Falköping's strong attack with Sandra Krantz, Linnea Liljegärd and Cynthia Uwak continued to worry AIK, but Jessica Julin played a key role on the defensive midfield position to fend off the attacks.

Djurgården - LDB FC Malmö 2 - 0 (1-0)
Djurgården: Bente Nordby - Kristin Bengtsson, Jane Törnqvist, , Therese Brogårde, Dorte Dalum Jensen - Elin Ekblom (88 Anna Lagerberth), Ann-Marie Norlin, Anna Hall,Linda Forsberg - Emma Lundh (60 Sara Thunebro), Victoria Svensson
Malmö: Caroline Jönsson - Therese Jönsson, Malin Levenstad, Emma Wilhelmsson, Lina Nilsson - Nanna Johansen (61 Dora Stefansdottir), Nilla Fischer, Therese Sjögran, Frida Nordin - Asthildur Helgadottir (81 Emelie Ölander), Emma Stålhammar (61 Manon Melis)
Goals: 1-0 Anna Hall (44), 2-0 Linda Forsberg (50)
Attendance: 783
The first half was an even affair, but not very well played. Both teams seemed stressed and made a lot of mistakes and passes were often off target. But close to the end of the first half Elin Ekblom managed to find Anna Hall with a good pass from her right side. Hall made no mistake and Djurgården could leave for halftime with a 1-0 lead and a discouraged Malmö team. And only five minutes in the second Djurgården could decide the match with a goal from Linda Forsberg, assisted by a nice cooperation from Djurgården's wingers Kristin Bengtsson and Elin Ekblom.
Those who watched the match said that Malmö seemed drained, more mentally than physically, by the Umeå match 4 days earlier and coach Pettersson was very disappointed with some of his players lack of dedication. Djurgården's Benny Persson was satisfied and looks forward to facing Umeå.

Bälinge: Veronika Svensson - Petra Vaelma, Linda Sembrant, Lina Andersson, Karolina Mats - Linda Blom, Moa Eriksson (22 Mikaela Björklund, 58 Emma Lindqvist), Katri Nokso-Koivisto, Anne Mäkinen - Annette Kent (79 Nina Engström), Sanna Talonen,
Goals: 1-0 Maureen Mmadu (10), 1-1 Annette Kent (24), 1-2 Sanna Talonen (24), 2-2 Sara Larsson (62), 3-2 Josefine Öqvist (70)
Attendance: 527
Linköping got off to a great start with Mmadu's header from a set piece, but Bälinge came back almost immedeately. First Annette Kent headed in a Mäkinen free-kick and then Linda Blom gave Sanna Talonen a perfect pass behind Linköping's defense line. A semi-upset (defeating Linköping doesn't qualify as a real upset this season) seemed to be on it's way. But Linköping finally was rewarded for their dominance and Sara Larsson equalised as she pushed in a pass from Josefine Öqvist and then Öqvist could score herself, as she from 30 meters noticed Bälinge's goalie a bit off position. Still, not really satisfying play from Linköping according to coach Pettersson while Bälinge did their best performance so far this season, forwards Kent and Talonen singled out.

Goals: 0-1 Sara Johansson (22)
Attendance: 406
Two sides that really needed a win met in Karlstad. A lot of the match was characterized by what you could call tennis - high balls bouncing back and forth from defense to defense. Qbik was creating a few opportunities in the beginning, but when Sara Johansson headed in a goal following a cornershot after a little bit more than 20 minutes, Hammarby also took over the match. Qbik lost much of their heart while Hammarby's defense made a good performance. Qbik lost three players to injuries; Ifeoma Dieke with a foot injury and Therese Lückner and Lisa Mellberg with knee problems.
Btw, I use the website damfakta.se for line-ups and match-stats. As far as I understand the site is managed by EFD, the association of Damallsvenskan clubs and should be accurate. But Qbik's Dieke has according to newspaper reports played at least two games for her new club now, including this, but is not to be found on the line-ups. Things like that really bothers my inner accountant.

Attendance: 538
Örebro had to leave forward engine Pavlina Scasna at home, but made the surprising choice to let just returned defender Keeley Dowling take her place. Sunnanå made a strong performance, dominated midfield and didn't let Örebro much into the game. But Örebro took relly goo care of their opportunities and scored 3 goals on 3 chances according to a disappointed Sunnanå coach. Emelia Erixon is really hot at the moment (7 goals in the league so far) and national team coach Thomas Dennerby praised her - "She has been developng a lot and is really fast, one of the fastest in the league" - but didn't really sound like he seriously considered her for a national team spot.

Attendance: 2,046
Umeå started with a really great first half, showing off a speedy, aggressive and agile attack. After only 30 minutes they were 4 goals up, Marta and Ma scoring two each. Ma hadn't convinced before this game and can still look a bit sluggish, but now showed her quality as a goalscorer. After 40 minutes Hanna Ljungberg had to leave the pitch, bleeding from an eyebrow after heading into Göteborg's defender Marlene Sjöberg. After that Umeå slowed down and mostly wnet through the motions in the second half. Still Karolina Westberg could make it 5-0 after a set piece before Göteborg ran through a somewhat unfocused Umeå defense in the last minutes.
Göteborg didn't get the best preparation as a air traffic strike forced them to take the overnight train to Umeå and goalie Maria Edman walked off with an injury when coach Pringle already had used all his substitutions and had to use outfield player Camilla Schelin as replacement. But none of this really affected the outcome.
Umeå's forced rotation of their non-EU players this time gave Elaine the opportunity to rest in the stands. When coach Jeglertz was asked when he would rest Marta he answered: "We rested her in a cup match. I think that is enough rest for her." Marta is extremely important for Umeå. When the team works great she is the hub that everything moves around and when it doesn't work as good, like against Malmö, she is the one that still decides the match in Umeå's favour.

Damallsvenskan Round VII: Lucky win for Umeå

"I know the entire Swedish football community want's us to lose, but we don't intend to please them" was Umeå coach Andrée Jeglertz' words before the early league final against Malmö. And after the match, he conceded that it was a lucky win, but "you earn your luck". And he appearently meant that Umeå had some luck due from the Arsenal matches. Pity Malmö had to pay, they did a pretty good performance.
And this might be the right time to explain some football fundamentals. The game is about scoring goals, and more precisely more goals than the other team. Nothing else is important unless it helps you score. Being good at football is being good at outscoring your opponent, there is no other way. Malmö created more, dominated midfield and made better passes against Umeå yesterday. But they were not a better team. The best team is the one that scores the most goals.

Hammarby IF - Djurgården 1 - 2 (0-1)

Hammarby: Katarina Wicksell - Malin Nykvist, Josefin Christensen, Elin Sölveskog, Annica Svensson - Jennie Jonsson - Lousie Fors, Therese Sandström, Josefin Weijner (73 Andrea Comaneci) - Sara Johansson, Anna Lindblom (46 Jessica Landström)

Goals: 0-1 Elin Ekblom (10), 0-2 Victoria Svensson (52), 1-2 Jessica Landström (85)
Attendance: 1,001
Ariane Hingst picked up a loose ball from Hammarby's defense ten minutes into the match and gave it to Elin Ekblom, who directly shot what might have been meant as cross but ended in net. Djurgården continued to dominate but hammarby managed to defend until another defensive mistake gave the ball to Victoria Svensson inside the penalty area. Hammarby started to get more offensive towards the end of the match, much thanks to Jessica Landström, and with only minutes left Sara Johansson outrun Jane Törnqvist, setting up Jessica Landgren who didn't have any problems making it 1-2. Hammarby continued to press against Djurgården's goal the remaining minutes, but Djurgården was never really threatened.

Attendance: 499
Only seconds into the match, Bälinge's Sanna Talonen could profit from a mistake by Sunnanå's Rebecca Smith. After that the guests had a good period and they could almost run through Bälinge's defense at will. First Kicki Wiklund and then Lina Johansson went solo to score and Johansson even passed Bälinge's unlucky goalie Veronika Svensson. But in the second half Bälinge got more stability in their game, much thanks to Anne Mäkinen. Bälinge's Finnish winger Nokso-Koivisto equalised with a lucky goal that seemed like a pass, misjudged by Sunnanå's keeper. After that Bälinge pushed for a victory, but Sunnanå managed to fend them off.

Had it not been for great goal-keeping by Maria Yatrakis the figures had been a lot more embarrasing for Qbik. It was play against one goal most of the match, but it took a penalty for Örebro to decide the match. And Yatrakis even saved that, but Örebro's Emelia Erixon (5 goals this season) was first on the rebound. Örebro's new coach Rikard Holmlund, leading his first home match in Damallsvenskan for several years, was fairly pleased with his team: "there were periods when we played really well."

Falköping has over and over again showed that they can be difficult to break. In the first half they managed to frustrate Göteborg and shut out their usually dangerous attack and even got the lead after a direct free-kick by junior attacker Linnea Liljegärd. But something happened in Göteborg's locker-room at halftime ("We got a good telling-off", revealed Lotta Schelin). After 5 minutes Lotta Schelin scored on the rebound from a Sara Lindén penalty shot and 5 minutes later Sofie Andersson got lucky with a really long shot, when Falköping's players were standing still waiting for the whistle for a free-kick. Now in the lead Göteborg played with much more confidence and a couple of Schelin sisters cooperations resulted in two more goals before Lotta (now 9 goals in 7 matches) completed her hat-trick. Göteborg's fullback Marlene Sjöberg didn't have much problems neutralizing Falköping's Cynthia Uwak, who played her first match from start. Falköping's coach Krister Engström was very disappointed with the refereeing, which he claimed gave Göteborg their two first goals.

Match of the week: the two top sides, great crowd (actually a Malmö all-time high!), vocal fans from both sides, nice weather, entertaining and exciting play. Malmö owned the midfield with Sjögran and Fischer making players like Klaveness and Ljungberg (once again in her new Moström position) fairly unvisible and their teenage defense once again were playing tight and coordinated. Umeå still came through on the wings and were a lot more efficient in front of goal than Malmö. Both Helgadottir and Melis were probably brought on from the injury list a little premature and didn't look their best. Ramona Bachman (who was picked over Ma Xiaoxu, since coach Jeglertz gave priority to the wings, which he considered Malmö's weakest point) scored her first Damallsvenskan goal somewhat against the run of the play. After Lina Nilsson's equaliser, set up by a great performance by Therese Sjögran, Malmö almost camped on Umeå's half and created lots of opportunities. But the match was ultimately decided by, who else, Marta, who's dangerous pass in front of goal probably would have reached an Umeå player if Lina Nilsson hadn't made her failed attempt to clear it, an attempt that ended in an own goal. After that Malmö's players lost most of their energy and the game faded out. Umeå's Andrée Jeglertz praised Malmö and called his victory "lucky" while Malmö's Jörgen Pettersson stated that you have to score more than once with eight or nine great chances if you want to defeat Umeå.

New Hammarby goalie and other news

Hammarby has signed Swiss international goalkeeper Kathrin Lehmann. She has 31 caps for Switzerland and has played in German top clubs like Turbine Potsdam and Bayern München. "Sweden is the country I always wanted to play soccer in. Hammarby is a well organised club, with big soccer traditions and many young and wild talents", the 27 years old says in her new club's press release. She will join Hammarby when the international transfer window opens July 1.
Lehman is also a merited ice-hockey forward with 140 caps. Last season she won the Swedish championship with the Stockholm side AIK.

Kif Örebro's defender Keeley Dowling will rejoin her Swedish club. Dowling got called up for the USA national team this winter and has spent the last months in residency camp in California. But she has been hampered by a knee injury and has not been picked for any of the training matches. Her knee now seems to be better and she is supposed to leave for Sweden within short.

Bälinge's defender Fanta Cooper, who left the club after the 2006 season, has signed for Jersey Sky Blue in the American W-league, joining other ex-Damallsvenskan players like Denise Reddy, Formiga and Erla Arnadottir.

Damallsvenskan Round VI: Cynthia Uwak's Swedish debut

This is starting to look a bit familiar. A top that already seems to have ran away from the rest (only new is that Linköping has been replaced by Sunnanå!), Umeå with 6 straight wins, Malmö and Djurgården undefeated. The next two rounds (the first already on Wednesday) Malmö will be playing both Umeå and Djurgården. I know it is early, but those two matches might be crucial for the outcome of the championship battle. Malmö hasn't been shy about their chances against Umeå after the last two wins - "We are a better team", says Therese Sjögran - but they have almost all their forwards on the injury list. Let's guess that this will still look familiar next week.

Djurgården - Kif Örebro 1 - 0 (0-0)

Djurgården: Bente Nordby - Sara Thunebro, Therese Brogårde, Jane Törnqvist, Dorte Dalum Jensen - Elin Ekblom, Ariane Hingst (76 Linda Forsberg), Anna Hall, Kristin Bengtsson (60 Annemarie Norlin) - Emma Lundh, Victoria Svensson
Örebro: Kristin Hammarström - Ingrid Ericson, Stina Segerström (83 Marina Pettersson), Sandra Linder, Caroline Näfver - Malin Nilsson, Lena Andersson, Marie Hammarström, Elin Magnusson - Pavlina Scasna, Emelia Erixon (64 Hodan Siid-Ahmed)
Goals:
1-0 Victoria Svensson (56)
Attendance: 437
Rikard Holmlund return to Damallsvenskan was fairly successful in the first half, when his Örebro kept Djurgården at arms length, not allowing their first shot on goal until the 32nd minute, when Ariane Hingst's shot touched the woodwork. Djurgården started to get more out of their possession in the second half and Victoria Svensson (who turned 30 the day before) could finally score, heading in a cross from Elin Ekblom. All in all a decent Damallsvenskan match, that Djurgården maybe should have managed to get a bigger win. Rikard Holmlund commented his first match with Örebro "I hate to lose, but they were stronger today". National team coach Thomas Dennerby was present, watching a fairly large group of presumptive World Cup players, Swedish and foreign.

4 points in six matches for pre-season championship contender Linköping. "They can definitely forget the gold now", commented TV4's Pontus Kåmark after the draw at Sunnanå. Sunnanå got the opening they could only wish for, when Anna Bodén scored from 25 meters less than a minute after kick-off. They continued to create scoring opportunities as Bodén and Frostevall in midfield fought down Linköping's Seger and Mmadu. Linköping still managed to equalize, Mmadu tapping in the ball from a free-kick. Then the cold, the rain and the wind began to drain the will and power from both teams and they both seemed satisfied to preserve their point.

Hammarby:

Umeå, where in particular the defense seemed unprepared for a real match, was caught napping by Hammarby. Two Hammarby goals in less than ten minutes and very close to a third, Sara Johansson and Belgian midfielder Marijke Callebaut cooperating on all three occasions. But Hammarby lost Callebaut to a hip injury and Umeå began, slowly, to gear up. Marta equalized with one of her trademark direct corner-kicks and after that the game was over for Hammarby. They continued to try to move forward, but had increasingly big problems fending off Umeå's attacks. In spite of being down two goals, there was never any real worry on Umeå's bench. "We made too many mistakes in the beginning of the match, but we knew they would get tired in the second half", said assistant coach Steve Galloway. Umeå's young Norwegian talent June Pedersen replaced Ramona Bachman and scored her first two Danmallsvenskan goals.

AIK was predicted to reach at least a mid-table position after their impressive pre-season signings, but after five matches they were at the bottom of the table with only two points and one goal. The match against Göteborg didn't change this. Defensively their game worked ok, but they completely lack the power and the dedication in front of goal that Göteborg showed when they forced in the first goal in a penalty zone shuffle. And just to make things worse, their only goalscorer so far, Finnish star Laura Kalmari, had to leave the field with a thigh muscle rupture.

Falköping has successfully played Örebro and Linköping at home and for quite some time it seemed like they would manage to repeat this with Malmö. A very determined defensive with 10 players on their own half at all times controlled the first half, slowing down Malmö and making them mostly play sideways in the midfield. But apparently the guests solved the problem during the half-time, because in the second half Malmö managed to tear through Falköping's defense. Nigerian star Cynthia Uwak made her long awaited Damallsvenskan debut, subbing in with 20 minutes left as a winger, but couldn't do much to change her team's fate. Malmö got their fourth forward on the injury list (joining Helgadottir, Lundin and Östman) when Manon Melis had to leave with a sprained foot. Uwak commented after the match that she was not impressed by Malmö's national team players "I can already see that it won't be hard to score on Caroline Jönsson". Maybe some kind of retaliation for Hanna Ljungberg's likewise unimpressed comments about Uwak's fellow Nigerians Mmadu and Ikidi after Umeå's win over Linköping?

"Probably the worst first half the team has ever played", was Bälinge's coach's verdict and Qbik's Janne Jansson said that three of the four goals were goals that shouldn't occur in a premier division match. In other words, two teams that both had big problems getting their play to work and instead making lots of individual mistakes. They both seemed more scared of losing than eager to win.

Umeå conceded their first Damallsvenskan goal this season and almost also their first points. A late goal by Marta (who else?) saved the day for the champions, but Örebro were close not only in scoring but also in the play. they played close and aggressive and didn't give Umeå the space they are used to. Örebro's incoming coach Rikard Holmlund watched the match from the stands and was satisfied "but there are details to work on".

An entertaining match with plenty of both goodies and mistakes. Falköping's Sandra Krantz goal after less than 2 minutes, when she picks up a sloppy Hammarby pass and scores is a good example. The match is decided when Falköping's Elin Osbeck stops the ball with her hand and Hammarby gets a penalty kick.

Göteborg has been touted as one of the presumtive top sides this season, but didn't show much of that against Malmö. Malmö soon conquered the midfield and their tight defense, ordered to never let anyone have to deal with Lotta Schelin alone, shut of Göteborg's dangerous attack. At the same time they have both speed and power in their attack. The picture changed a bit towards the end of the match, when Göteborg's coach Martin Pringle ordered a 3-5-2 formation to win back the midfield, while Malmö's defense started to tire from their power-draining tactics. Schelin managed to escape twice, scoring once and forcing a good save from Caroline Jönsson once.

Finally Linköping's first win. Mmadu and Ikidi impressed for Linköping as they played their old club Qbik. Linköping had the match in their hands most of the 90 minutes, but there were a period after Qbik's second half goal when the match could have taken a turn. But a combination between Mmadu, Milbrett and Öqvist, the best goal of the match, gave Linköping back the initiative.

Umeå changed back to their old successfull 4-3-3, now with Hanna Ljungberg in the old Malin Moström position. It worked better than expected. Hanna's cooperation with Marta in the attack worked great and the Brazilian forward set up 3 of Hanna's 4 goals. Bälinge's rather offensive tactics led to what their home town paper called "a tea-party in the penalty zone" and made it easier than neccesary for Umeå.

Swedish Cup: Expected wins with unexpected line-ups

The premier division teams join the Swedish Cup in the fourth round to play teams that have survived the three initial rounds. Since they are playing second, third and even fourth rate teams, the damallsvenskan sides often take the opportunity to field domething else than "their best side", that the rules of the cup expects them to do.

Bollstanäs - Hammarby 0 - 3 (0-0)
Goals: 0-1 Josefin Christensen (59), 0-2 Marijke Callebaut (62), 0-3 Sara Johansson (85)
Hammarby guested Bollstanäs, currently 10th place (1-2-2) in the 1st division north. They had some problems in the first half with the northern Stockholm team, where Linda Fagerström (former Hammarby, Djurgården and Sweden midfielder) now plays retirement football, but shifted to a higher gear in the second.

Glanshammar - Qbik 0 - 4 (0-1)
Goals: 0-1 Jennifer Meier (33), 0-2 Anna Nilsson (53), 0-3 Julia Spetzmark (75), 0-4 Rebecca Jonsson (86)
It was play against one goal when Qbik met 2nd division side Glanshammar. Coach Jansson took the opportunity to test some players that haven't got that much time so far this year, among them defender Lovisa Eriksson and young forward Julia Spetsmark.

A very experimental Malmö team had no problems with local 2nd division BK Vången. Midfielders Therese Sjögran and Nanna Johansen played in the attack while they fielded a completely new midfield (Cecilia Kotte, Dóra Stefánsdóttir, Emma Herbring and Lina Nilsson). Reports talks about "a very relaxed pace" from the Malmö side, but at least they got to show off their (infamous) new away kits.

Team Hudik - Bälinge 0 - 3 (0-2)
Goals: 0-1 Emma Lindqvist (31), 0-2 Lisa Lantz (44), 0-3 Emma Lindqvist (57)
Bälinge left 7 starters at home when they travelled north to face 2nd division club Team Hudik, but did still not impress their coach Ali Amini. "We were challenged through almost the entire match", he says, but still defends the decision to use mostly back-up players.

IK Tun - Kif Örebro 0 - 8 (0-4)
Goals: 0-1 Hanna Pettersson (6), 0-2 Caroline Näfver (12), 0-3 Emelia Erixon (16), 0-4 Hanna Pettersson (35), 0-5 Emelia Erixon (46), 0-6 Emelia Erixon (65), 0-7 Hanna Pettersson (78), 0-8 Hanna Pettersson (87)
Örebro was an exception as they went to IK Tun (3rd division) with their best squad. This was also new coach Rikard Holmlund's first on the sideline, so he probably wanted to get to know his team.

Rågsved - Djurgården 0 - 10 (0-2)
Goals: 0-1 Elin Ekblom (6), 0-2 Elin Ekblom (24), 0-3 Anna Lagerberth (50), 0-4 Victoria Svensson (59), 0-5 Maria Järkeryd (72), 0-6 Ariane Hingst (75), 0-7 Maria Järkeryd (78), 0-8 Ariane Hingst (87), 0-9 Victoria Svensson (90), 0-10 Kristin Bengtsson (91 PK)
Djurgården gave back-up keeper Sofia Åhman the chance and rested couple of starters who had minor injuries (Dalum, Lundh and Engdahl), but were still very superior to 2nd division hosts Rågsved, the more as the match lasted and the difference in strenghth and stamina became clear.

Reigning Cup champions Linköping rested some of their stars against 3rd division Åtvidaberg, but could still show internationals like Tiffeny Milbrett, Maria Karlsson, Maureen Mmadu and Faith Ikidi on the field. A pitifull first half, according to coach Daniel Pettersson, changed to a much better second, when they scored 4 in less than 15 minutes.

Brommapojkarna - AIK 0 - 1 (0-0)
Goals: 0-1 Sofia Simonsson (48)
AIK rested three of their national team players and tried an unusual 4-2-3-1 set-up. They encountered unexpected problems from hosting Brommapojkarna (2nd division), that defended fiercly but lacked edge in their attack. And the edge in the attack seems to be also AIK's problem, in Damallsvenskan as well as against 2nd division teams.

Alvik - Umeå IK 0 - 3 (0-1)
Goals: 0-1 Ma Xiaoxu (24), 0-2 Ma Xiaoxu (62), 0-3 Lise Klaveness (86)
Umeå's squad isn't big enough to give room for much changes in the line-up, so they went north with the usual suspects to face Alvik (2nd divison). There were never any problems for the team, but they were surprisingly inefficiant in front of goal. When goalie carola Söberg late in the game had to leave with a foot injury, 159 centimeters tall Hanna Ljungberg was the only one left on the bench and had to put on the goal-keeper gloves. Bit her defense is good and she was only tested once.

European Championship qualifications: Bad match, good result against Italy

Italy - Sweden 0 - 2 (0-1)
Sweden: Caroline Jönsson - Anna Paulsson, Hanna Marklund, Stina Segerström, Frida Östberg - Caroline Seger, Nilla Fischer - Therese Sjögran (90 Maria Aronsson') - Josefine Öqvist (72 Sara Johansson), Victoria Svensson, Lotta Schelin (76 Frida Nordin)
Goals: 0-1 Caroline Seger (42), 0-2 Nilla Fischer (90')
Attendance: 1,200
20 minutes good play and two goals, headed by midfielders Seger and Fischer, assisted by Östberg and Svensson respectively. That concludes the upsides of a match that according to those who watched it was mostly boring. The Swedish attack seemed stale and uninventive and struggled against a strong Italian defense. The Swedish defense on the other hand was more or less flawless and only allowed one single scoring opportunity for the Italians. They got the job done, but performances like this doesn't really inspire confidence in the team as China is approaching.
This match wasn't very well publicized in Sweden. Even if RAI was at the venue and aired it in Italy, no Swedish broadcaster bought the rights for Sweden. There were only two newspapers (Sydsvenskan and Göteborgsposten) and one TV station (TV4) covering the match. Which means that most of the reports were based on interviews with Thomas Dennerby.

UEFA Women's Cup: Scoreless Umeå lose final

Arsenal LFC - Umeå IK 0 - 0 (0-0)
Umeå: Carola Söberg - Anna Paulson, Karolina Westberg, Johanna Frisk, Maria Bergkvist - Lisa Dahlqvist (55 Madeleine Edlund), Elaine, Lise Klaveness, Ma Xiaoxu (71 Ramona Bachman) - Marta, Hanna Ljungberg
Attendance: 3,467
An enjoyable afternoon. Decent weather, friendly crowd with a sort of full-house feeling to it. Appearently it is supposed to be possible to force almost another 1,000 spectators in to the stands, but I really wouldn't have wanted to be there in that case. The queue to the hamburger stand was already long enough and it was still possible to move around a bit. There was a substantial Swedish precense at the match. According to Umeå, they had sold close to 100 tickets to fans and from the looks (and sound) of it, there were several hundred more that made the trip to Borehamwood on their own. For someone like me, that really didn't have that much invested in the match, it was also an enjoyable match, even if it wasn't top quality until Umeå finally found their game the last 15-20 minutes. Hard-working Arsenal defense, from the midfielders down to a sometimes excellent and sometimes just plain lucky Byrne in goal, and a referee that at a few occasions looked a bit more lenient than was called for decided the match in Arsenal's favour.
Match reports in English can be found at e.g.
UEFA, Arsenal and The FA. But I suppose you've figured that out already. My ambition was to post reports from London, but that city has so much more to offer than Internet cafes.
Post-game reports in Sweden went along the lines of "We were better, but it is the goals that count" to "We were robbed by the ref!". Two first half handballs and Anita Asante's blatant holdning of Hanna Ljungberg in the second all went unnoticed. Apart from that, most of the post-match press was about Umeå's 16 years old Swiss talent Ramona Bachman, who did great the 20 minutes she played. In Damallsvenskan, she is usually left outside the match squad, since only 3 non-EU players are allowed and those spots has been reserved for Marta, Elaine and Ma.

Damallsvenskan round IV: Falköping wins again (!)

Weird. Falköping, a team I thought would be hard pushed to get any points at all, took their second win while Linköping, that everybody but me thought was a championship contender, could see their fourth straight defeat. On the other hand Malmö and Djurgården have already, predictably, stumbled against minnows and Göteborg goes from embarrasing away defeats to convincing home victories. Umeå still hasn't really joined in, but in spite of their inability to score internationally, I can see a repeat of last year's dominance.

Falköpings KIK - KIF Örebro 2 - 0 (2-0)
Falköping: Malin Andersson - Nettan Hofling, Karin Neuman, Elin Osbeck, Emma Eriksson, Terese Larsson (87 Sandra Krantz), Madeleine Tegström, Cecilia Abrahamsson (68 Josefine Alfsson), Camilla Sanderheim (78 Charlotte Abrahamsson), Sofia Fröjdstedt, Linnea Liljegärd
Örebro: Kristin Hammarström - Ingrid Ericson, Stina Segerström, Sandra Linder, Caroline Näfver - Elin Magnusson, Lena Andersson, Marie Hammarström (78 Malin Nilsson), Hodan Siid-Ahmed (58 Hanna Pettersson) - Pavlina Scasna, Emelia Erixon
Goals: 1-0 Linnea Liljegärd (7 PK), 2-0 Linnea Liljegärd (42)
Attendance: 1,110
Falköping continues to impress at home. An early penalty goal gave them the upper hand against an Örebro team, that didn't look completly focused. Defensive failures set up both Falköping's goals and it took more than the first half before Örebro could take the predicted grip on the match. Then it was too late. Falköping backed down and was content to guard their lead. "I was never worried", said Falköping coach Krister Engström.
The small town Falköping probably hasn't much else to offer a Sunday afternoon, but the home crowds of over 1,000 in both their matches so far is impressing.

Attendance: 643
"This is the best 90 minutes we've played so far", commented Göteborg's coach Martin Pringle. Coming from the 3-0 defeat against Örebro, it was a determinated Göteborg that showed up. The defense, where Jenny Engwall now seems to have accostumed to her new role in the centre, didn't allow Hammarby's attack anything, the midfield won almost everything and the attack was swift and efficient. Göteborg's speedy wingers Farfa and Andersson tore apart Hammarby's defense and Schelin and Lindén up front got a lot of space. Schelin now seems to be back at her old self, scoring 2 and setting up 2.

Qbik - Sunnanå SK 0 - 1 (0-0)
Qbik: Maria Yatrakis - Anna Nilsson, Lisa Mellberg, Jenny Hallstenson, Rebecca Johnson (68 Sanna Backman), Therése Lückner (46 Elin Sandgren), Amelie Rybäck, Charlotte Nygren, Elin Ragnvaldsson (90 Julia Spetsmark), Therése Björk, Jennifer Meier

Goals: 0-1 Carina Holmberg (90)
Attendance: 507
A match, that Sunnanå dominated while Qbik had big problems getting anything done against the guest's stoppers Marklund and Smith. Good defense by Qbik, and in particular by their keeper Yatrakis, still kept the score even until the last minutes. And Sunnanå isn't really that hot up front.. The deciding goal came after a corner-shot shuffle, where Yatrakis first seemed to have the ball under control and then not. She wanted a free-kick for being attacked by a Sunnanå player while holdning the ball, but the referee allowed the goal. Then her Greek temper, as she put it herself, kicked in. But her very vocal protests earned her nothing but a yellow card. Qbik's coach Jansson that the Sunnanå win wasn't unearned, but agreed with his keepers protests.

AIK - LDB FC Malmö 0 - 0 (0-0)
AIK: Sofia Lundgren - Madelene Göras, Frida Höglund, Sanna Valkonen, Linda Lekander - Lina Hedqvist, Ingrid Bohlin, Jessica Juhlin, Sofia Simonsson (76 Madelene Wedin), Anna Lundin - Freja Egerbrant
Malmö: Caroline Jönsson - Emelie Ölander, Dora Stefansdottir, Therese Jönsson, Lina Nilsson - Frida Nordin (76 Nanna Johansen), Therese Sjögran, Nilla Fischer, Emma Stålhammar - Asthildur Helgadottir (82 Louise Östman), Manon Melis (90 Emma Herbring)
Attendance: 247
AIK, missing striker Laura Kalmari, showed up with a very defensive 4-5-1 and kept a very aggressive pressure on Malmö's attackers and midfield. The tactics worked, much with the help from great goalkeeping by Sofia Lundgren. Malmö's Atshildur Helgadottir had to leave ten minutes from the end with a hurting knee, but she will probably be fit again in time for the next match.

Djurgården - Linköpings FC 2 - 1 (0-0)
Djurgården: Bente Nordby - Sara Thunebro (82 Malin Engdahl), Therese Brogårde, Jane Törnqvist, Dorte Dalum Jensen - Elin Ekblom, Ariane Hingst (82 Ann-Marie Norlin), Linda Forsberg, Kristin Bengtsson - Emma Lundh (88 Anna Hall), Victoria Svensson,
Linköping: Jenny Olsson - Sara Larsson, Charlotte Rohlin, Marie-Louise Skålberg (90 Faith Ikidi), Frida Östberg - Ann Westermark, Maureen Mmadu, Tiffeny Milbrett, Caroline Seger - Maria Aronsson (54 Maja Krantz), Josefine Öqvist,
Goals: 1-0 Victoria Svensson (48), 1-1 Josefine Öqvist (54), 2-1 Emma Lundh (85)
Attendance: 734
Close to the end of the match it seemed like Linköping would earn their first point for the season. They had even been the best side for large parts of the match, with Caroline Seger and Josefine Öqvist looking good and forcing Bente Nordby in goal to great saves. Victoria Svensson's goal for Djurgården was soon followed by Josefine Öqvist's equaliser, where she dribbled through Djurgården's defense. But just 5 minutes from time, Linköping's defense lost guard of Emma Lundh at a free-kick and the young striker could convert Victoria Svensson's pass.
"This is so frustrating I can hardly explain it", sighed Linköping's coach Daniel Pettersson after the match. "We were playing a really great game, but it still didn't help."
