Match-day 18: 10 player Göteborg defeats Djurgården

Malmö FF - Linköping FC  2 - 2 (1-1)
Malmö: Caroline Jönsson - Lina Nilsson, Emma Wilhelmsson, Therese Jönsson, Jenny Engwall - Nanna Johansen (69 Emma Stålhammar), Nilla Fischer, Therese Sjögran, Frida Nordin - Therese Lundin, Asthildur Helgadottir
Linköping: Hedvig Lindahl - Marie-Louise Skålberg, Frida Östberg, Charlotte Rohlin, Maria Lindström (65 Maria Aronsson) - Anna-Kaisa Rantanen, Caroline Seger, Tiffeny Milbrett - Ann Westermark, Maria Karlsson, Josefine Öqvist
Goals: 1-0 Asthildur Helgadottir (26 PK), 1-1 Tiffeny Milbrett (37), 2-1 Asthildur Helgadottir (55), 2-2 Anna-Kaisa Rantanen (64)
Attendance: 580
Two evenly matched teams met in a fairly entertaining match - 11 of the starters are currently on their national team squads. Malmö had more initiative in the first half, their combinations and short-passing worked out well. Speedy winger Nanna Johansen found her way around Linköping's defense several times and when left back Maria Lindström was left behind after some 25 minutes she found no other solution than to bring Johansen down. And Nanna can do a really good-looking fall. Asthildur Helgadottir made no mistake with the penalty kick. But not long after Linköping got i free-kick and could equalise, Milbrett scoring on a rebound from Malmö keeper Caroline Jönsson. Jönsson was hit in the stomach during her clearing attempt and lied on the ground for several minutes, but could continue.
Linköping came out strong in the second half, making good use of Josefine Öqvist's speed, and beginning to take control in midfield. But Malmö's balls over the midfield to Helgadottir and Lundin were always dangerous. Malmö's second goal was a beautifull piece of cooperation between them, ended with a heel-pass from Lundin to Helgadottir. Malmö's young defense still feels immature and they sometimes had huge problems clearing the ball out of the area. This showed on both Linköping goals, the second also from a free-kick, where Linköping won back the ball after every Malmö clearing attempt.
Player of the match awards went to Therese Sjögran (today working at least as much in defense as in offense) and Linköping's defender Charlotte Rohlin (could be a national team player if the competition for  centre defense position wasn't so hard) and rightly so. They both showed compusure and control and never fell for the temptation to just kick the ball away.

Djurgården/Älvsjö - Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC  2 - 3 (1-3)
Djurgården: Bente Nordby - Sara Thunebro, Therese Brogårde, Jane Törnqvist, Dorte Dalum Jensen (46 Annemarie Norlin) - Linda fagerström, Anna Hall, Katrine Pedersen (46 Elin EKblom), Kristin Bengtsson - Laura Kalmari, Victoria Svensson
Göteborg: Maria Edman - Marlene Sjöberg, Frida Höglund, Sofia Dammström, Maria Nilsson - Emmelie Farfa, Lisa Ek (46 Frida Thydén), Jessica Julin, Camilla Schelin (55 Red card) - Lotta Schelin, Sara Lindén (52 Rebecca Ljungdahl)
Goals: 0-1 Sara Lindén (6), 0-2 Lotta Schelin (11), 0-3 Lotta Schelin (38), 1-3 Victoria Svensson (42), 2-3 Elin Ekblom (48)
Attendance: 407
Three goals for Göteborg in less than 40 minutes, Lotta Schelin behind all of them. That was enough to throw Djurgården severly off balance. Göteborg spent much of the remainder of the match defending, and defending fiercly. Djurgården had a constant pressure on Göteborg the second half, the more after Camilla Schelin was shown off the field following her second yellow, and created a lot of corners, free-kicks and other opportunities but without result. This was Djurgården's third disappointing performance in a row.

Qbik - Jitex BK  1 - 1 (0-0)
Qbik:
Jitex: Kristin Luckenbill - Sofia Lindorsson, Amelie Rybeck, Emma Herbring, Caroline Lindblad - Therese Björk, Malin Normelli, Leah Robinson, Therese Bjurenlind - Katie Eriksson, Sara Sjöstedt
Goals: 1-0 Maureen Mmadu (52), 1-1 Leah Robinson (89)
Attendance: 578
The could-be relegation deciding match ended in a draw, that probably disappointed both sides, but Qbik the most. Qbik had a 1-0 lead, seemingly controlling the match and not really bothered by Jitex sparse attacks. But still, when the game was almost over, they made a crucial miss in marking and communication in the defense and the match ended with Qbik's 9th draw this season.

Sunnanå SK - Mallbackens IF  2 - 0 (1-0)
Sunnanå: Åsa Berglund - Sandra Berggren, Hanna Marklund, Rebecca Smith, Kicki Viklund (90 Amanda Stenerkrans) - Maria Nordbrandt (83 Johanna Lindahl) , Anna Bodén, Sanna Frostevall, Alexandra Nilsson (73 Carro Marklund) - Madde Edlund, Lina Johansson
Mallbacken:
Goals: 1-0 Madelene Edlund (18), 2-0 Sanna Frostevall (77)
Attendance: 557
Sunnanå won without impressing. When Madelene Edlund scored from a chance ball and gave her team the lead, Sunnanå's defense with Hanna Marklund and Rebecca Smith dominated the match. Mallbacken didn't manage to create much forward and Sunnanå's chances come mostly from Mallbacken's mistakes.

Match-day 17: Last minute win for Umeå

Linköping FC - Umeå IK  0 - 1 (0-0)
Linköping:
Umeå:  Sofia Lundgren - Anna Paulson, Karolina Westberg, Sanna Valkonen, Maria Bergkvist - Anne Mäkinen, Malin Moström, Lisa Dahlqvist (53 Elaine) - Anna Sjöström, Hanna Ljungberg, Lise Klaveness
Goals: 0-1 Maria Bergkvist (93)
Attendance: 3,427

Linköping showed more will and determination and their speedy forwards, not the least Josefine Öqvist on the right wing, created more work for Sofia Lundgren in Umeå's goal than she usually gets in a couple of matches. Öqvist, who didn't impress against Djurgården last weekend, seemed much more at ease against meå's defense. Milbrett, in an offensive midfield position, showed vision and creativity.
Umeå, on the other hand, played at their best calm and safe, at their worst slow and inefficient. Linköping's new centre defense composition Charlotte Rohlin-Frida Östberg, where Rohlin impressed most, contained Hanna Ljungberg and made her seem rather unthreatening. Umeå's usually well working 4-3-3 this time left Ljungberg alone in the centre, to far away from both the wingers and the midfield. Marta's absence from Umeå's attack (yellow card suspension) was very visible. Some time into the second half Umeå substituted Lisa Dahlqvist for Elaine and changed to a 4-4-2, putting Klaveness together with Ljungberg. It still didn't change the picture much.
But in spite of creating much more forward than Umeå, Linköping never managed to break Sofia Eriksson's shut-out. Instead Umeå, in the 3rd minute of extra-time, was awarded a free-kick as Linköping's Rohlin for once was more harsh against Hanna Ljungberg than the situation called for. Anne Mäkinen took a long shot against the far post, where a completely unmarked Maria Bergkvist could score the winner for Umeå.
Linköping's Josefine Öqvist, in my opinion up til then one of their most usefull player, were some 20 minutes into the second half substituted for (as usual) Ann Westermark. She was visibly unhappy with being brought off the field and that's gold worth for any TV reporter waiting on the side-line. Josefine said some well (or maybe not that well) chosen words about her coach's decision. Coach Karlsson commented, somewhat irritated, "You couldn't have waited two minutes for her to calm down?"

Mallbacken:
Malmö: Caroline Jönsson - Therese Jönsson, Emma Wilhelmsson, Malin Levenstad, Jenny Engwall - Nanna Johansen (70 Emma Stålhammar), Therese Sjögran, Nilla Fischer, Frida Nordin - Therese Lundin (87 Lina Nilsson), Ásthildur Helgadóttir
Goals: 0-1 Asthildur Helgadottir (20), 0-2 Asthildur Helgadottir (58)
Attendance: 761
It was pay-back time for Malmö, who suffered a 0-1 loss to Mallbacken in their home leg this season. They started fast, controlled the game and soon enough took the lead, Asthildur Helgadottir exploiting a defensive mistake from Mallbacken. But Mallbacken hadn't given up. After the half-time they came back more offensive with more speed and more players higher up in the field. This however made then vulnerable to counters and Malmö's speedy winger Nanna Johansen could give Asthildur Helgadottir a perfect cross to head in goal.

Match-day 17: Örebro draws Djurgården

Hammarby IF - Sunnanå SK 1 - 1 (1-0)
Hammarby: Katarina Wicksell - Annica Svensson, Carolina Rinman, Linda Forsberg, Caitlin Fisher (59 Elin Sölveskog) - Louise Fors, Therese Sandström, Jennie Jonsson, Marijke Callebaut, Sara Johansson - Emma Lundh (66 Jessica Landström)
Sunnanå: Åsa Berglund - Sandra Berggren, Hanna Marklund, Rebecca Smith, Kicki Wiklund (89 Maggie Esseryd) - Maria Nordbrandt (73 Alexandra Nilsson), Carina Holmberg (78 Carolina Marklund), Sanna Frostevall, Anna Bodén - Madde Edlund, Lina Johansson
Goals: 1-0 Sara Johansson (45), 1-1 Maria Nordbrandt (51)
Attendance: 252

Sunnanå had a weak start, creating almost nothing forward. Hammarby dominated the first half, but had problems getting past Sunnanå's defense with Hanna Marklund in their attempts to reach Sara Johansson. Finally, in the 45th minute, their work paid off as Lollo Fors dribbled through Sunnanå's defense on the left side and finished with cross to the forward-rushing Sara Johansson, who headed in 1-0.
Something must have been said at half-time in Sunnanå's locker-room, because they looked much better in the second half. After only a few minutes their attacks had resulted in a corner-kick, where Maria Nordbrandt could score from a rebound. The more time passed, the more careful the teams played, seemingly more anxious to keep the point they ahd than eager to earn another one.

Goals: 1-0 Katie Eriksson (18), 1-1 Minna Mustonen (22)
Attendance: 166

Ater five defeats in a row, Jitex managed to get a point and, at least temporarly, move out of the relegation zone. But the match was a lot about two teams without much self-confidence. After the two early goals - Jitex Katie Eriksson heading in a corner-kick from Therese Björk and Bälinge's Minna Mustonen converting a great Kacey White pass - the first half was uneventfull. The home side started to get the upper hand in the second half, but their attacks never resulted in anything more than forcing Maja Åström ion Bälinge's goal to a couple of good saves.

KIF Örebro - Djurgården/Älvsjö  2 - 2  (1-1)

Örebro: Kristin Hammarström - Ingrid Ericson, Stina Segerström, Keeley Dowling, Caroline Näfver - Lena Andersson, Marie Hammarström, Hodan Siid-Ahmed (66 Sandra Persson), Elin Magnusson - Emelia Erixon, Pavlina Scasna
Djurgården:  Bente Nordby - Kristin Bengtsson, Jane Törnqvist, Therese Brogårde, Sara Thunebro - Linda Fagerström, Katrine Pedersen (79 Mimmi Nordlander-Andersson), Anna Hall, Dorte Dalum Jensen (46 Anne-Marie Norlin) - Victoria Svensson, Elin Ekblom
Goals: 1-0 Keeley Dowling (28), 1-1 Victoria Svensson (36), 2-1 Keeley Dowling (76), 2-2 Victoria Svensson (80)
Attendance: 854

Player of the match, two goals and Keeley Dowling was still disappointed. She failed to clear a ball when Örebro was 2-1 up and the always dangerous Victoria Svensson caught the opportunity and scored. "It feels really bitter when we were so close. We had a lot of opportunities and should have won the match."
Örebro had a really good day, great team-work, hard working defense and a lot of passes findning forwards Scasna and Erixon. 13 shots on goal against Djurgården's 6, a missed penalty kick and Dowling's 86th minute header in the woodwork shows which team was closest to victory.
Örebro began to pressure Djurgården's defense already from the beginning, Pavlina Scasna in a key role. Djurgården's Nordby, Törnqvist and Brogårde worked hard to keep clean, but Örebro created dangerous set pieces. Dowling headed both her two goals when she was unmarked on corner kicks. Djurgården had problems recreating the flow in their attacking game from last weekend, but Victoria Svensson, still in great form, took good care of what was created.

Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC - Qbik  3 - 1  (2-1)
Göteborg: Maria Edman - Maria Nilsson, Sofia Dammström, Frida Höglund, Marlene Sjöberg - Camillas Schelin (61 Rebecca Ljungdahl), Jessica Julin, Sara Lindén (87 Sofie Andersson), Emmelie Farfa (74 Frida Thydén) - Salina Olsson, Lotta Schelin
Qbik:
Goals: 1-0 Jessica Julin (37), 1-1 Jennifer Meier (39), 2-1 Lotta Schelin (40), 3-1 Salina Olsson (81)
Attendance: 257
It should have been an easy win for Göteborg, at least on paper, but Qbik is a better team than their position in the league indicates. The first 30 minutes showed good play from both sides and Qbik didn't at all look like a weaker side. But when an unmarked Jessica Julin could score from a free-kick and Lotta Schelin could steal a failed backpass and put in in  goal, Jennifer Meier short-lived equaliser didn't help much. As the second half went on, Qbik lost some of their momentum and Salina Olsson could seal the win for Göteborg with 10 minutes remaining. Still, Qbik's coach Jan Svensson thinks it's looking good for the crucial match against Jitex next weekend. "We're playing good now, we just have to take better care of our goal chances and take better care in defense."

Match-day 16: Bälinge scores at last

Qbik - Bälinge  1 - 1 (0-0)
Qbik:

Goals: 0-1 Emma Lindqvist (66), 1-1 Maureen Mmadu (79)
Attendance:  312

Two teams in dire need for points fought it out on a rain-wet and heavy pitch - not the prettiest football you can imagine. Emma Lindqvist gave Bälinge their first goal for more than 400 minutes, beautifully set up be Kacey White, but Qbik's Mmadu could equalise with a flying header from Jennifer Meier's cross. Bälinge's Mustonen and Sitch both had really good chances to retake the lead, but Qbik's Maria Yatrakis in goal made a couple of great saves. Yatrakis, who was benched her first matches with the club, now played her second in Qbik's goal and might become a key player for her team, thinks coach Kjell Petersson.

Malmö FF - Hammarby  1 - 1 (1-0)
Malmö: Caroline Jönsson - Therese Jönsson, Emma Wilhelmsson, Malin Levenstad, Jenny Engwall - Nanna Johansen (75 Johanna Rosén), Therese Sjögran, Nilla Fischer, Lina Nilsson (64 Emma Stålhammar) - Therese Lundin, Ásthildur Helgadóttir

Goals: 1-0 Lina Nilsson (6), 1-1 Jessica Landström (88)
Attendance: 453

Malmö started good, dominated Hammarby and got an early goal when Lina Nilsson scored from a Nanna Johansen cross. They continued to run the show and had several good chances, but Helgadottir and Lundin seemed to lack their usual sharpness. The play became more stagnant over time with a lot of high balls bouncing between the teams in midfield. Hammarby started to preassure Malmö, feeding Sara Johansson with long balls and Caroline Jönsson in Malmö's goal had to show her qualities, including a double save in a one on one with Johansson. It felt very much like a Hammarby equaliser was on its way and close to the final whistle Jessica Landström could score from a Caitlin Fisher corner kick. All in all a fair result, even if Hammarby seemed to enjoy it most - coach En Perlskog shouted a happy "Yess!!" at the final whistle.
The heavy rain had made Malmö FF's home arena unplayable and the match moved to Malmö's men's arena, Malmö stadion, on short notice. Malmö's usually vocal fans must have lost their way somewhere between the two arenas, but there was a small but loud contingent of Hammarby fans who gave us the classic chant "Öka takten sista kvarten - TI-DA-HOLM!" with 15 minutes left to play.

Is Umeå getting complacent? Or just plain bored? 1-0 at home against Mallbacken (and on a dubious penalty at that) isn't really what was expected - the average over the last 5 years must be something like at least 5-0. Local media is questioning if this team is really prepared for the UEFA Women's Cup group play they will face in a little more than a week. Sloppy passing, slow pace and a lot of offside runs hurt the rhythm of the play and the lousy weather didn't help either. Defender Karolina Westberg was the only one in the team that got away with more than at best a simple passing grade from the critical local press.
Mallbacken on the other hand were pleased with their performance, but not satisfied. "We should have got 1 point today", said coach Fahlén, "but this should at least have helped our confidence a bit". In particular he was pleased with Monsén and Swaving at top and also with Elizabeth Dauble, who made her first appearence as a starter: "She's grown a lot since she first came here".

Match-day 16: Impressive Djurgården outclasses lack-lustre Linköping

Djurgården/Älvsjö - Linköping FC  6 - 2 (3-1)
Djurgården: Bente Nordby - Sara Tunebro, Therese Brogårde, Malin Engdahl, Kristin Öqvist - Elin Ekblom, Katrine Pedersen (61 Dorte Dalum Jensen), Anna Hall, Linda Fagerström - Victoria Svensson, Laura Kalmari
Linköping: Ellinor Birath - Frida Östberg, Marie-Louise Skålberg, Charlotte Rohlin, Maria Karlsson (76 Karin Lindström) - Anna-Kaisa Rantanen, Caroline Seger, Petra Larsson (75 Emma Claesson) - Josefine Öqvist (75 Ann Westermark), Maria Aronsson, Tiffeny Milbrett
Goals: 1-0 Elin Ekblmo (8), 2-0 Elin Ekblom (26), 2-1 Anna-Kaisa Rantanen (34), 3-1 Victoria Svensson (42), 3-2 Anna-Kaisa Rantanen (48), 4-2 Laura Kalmari (55), 5-2 Dorte Dalum Jensen (69), 6-2 Laura Kalmari (77)
Attendance: 884

A great performance by Djurgården, that dominated most of the match and left Linköping pretty dejected in the second half. Djurgården got an early goal, where Victoria Svensson with some skillfully moves in the box set up Elin Ekblom, coming with speed from her right wing. The second was a long, perfect pass from Sara Tunebro to Svensson, who headed it to the far post where Ekblom once again came running. "I haven't seen many Djurgården training sessions, but this must have been rehearsed", to quote the TV4 commentators. Tiffeny Milbrett, Linköping's best on a underperforming team, did the work behind Rantanen's reduction and Linköping had a good period there for a while. They also started the second half with a lot of gusto and Rantanen's second goal put them in competiton again. But a really fast counter, started with a long Nordby kick, a Pedersen touch to Svensson, a step and a cross to Kalmari and Djurgården was up 4-2. The 5th and 6th were just for good measure, Linköping was already defeated.

Generally Linköping's 4-3-3 didn't work against Djurgården and they showed their vulnerability to fast counters. Defense (where two important starters are missing) looked shaky under preassure, the midfield got overrun with Djurgården's wings roaming free and their attackers had severe problems with Djurgården's defense. Kristin Bengtsson is by no means as fast as Josefine Öqvist, but managed to win almost all of their many duels.

Djurgården was solid, from back to front, and seems to have found a way of play that works out really well. A fast throw-out by Nordby to one of the outside defenders and by then the wingers and attackers have already moved into position. A long pass to a winger or to Victoria Svensson as target in the center, a cross aimed at the far goal post where someone comes rushing. Worked like a charm. And there is the occasional really long Nordby kick directly to Kalmari. This time Djurgården definitely looked like a team that can whip Umeå, but coach Benny Persson admitted that he didn't believe they can catch up, Umeå is too far away.

Göteborg had problems with KIF Örebro, where goalie Kristin Hammarström feeded Pavlina Scasna with long balls, but managed, unlike in some earlier matches, to keep both nerves and team together. Great first goal by loanie farfa, who ran through Örebro's defense in a solo raid.

Sunnanå: Åsa Berglund - Sandra Berggren (Carolina Marklund), Hanna Marklund, Rebecca Smith, Kicki Wiklund - Maria Nordbrandt (Alexandra Nilsson), Carina Holmberg, Sanna Frostevall, Anna Bodén - Lina Johansson (Emma Jonsson), Madelaine Edlund

Attendance: 511

Sunnanå started with a shot on goal already after 30 seconds and had Jitex on the defense. But after 20 minutes a fast counter from Jitex made the young forward Sara Sjöstedt the first scorer with a fine shot from just outside the panalty area. This seemed to chock Sunnanå a bit and it took them some time to get back into the match. Lina Johansson made the crucial just before half-time goal. The match continued to weigh between the teams in the second and wasn't decided until Carina Holmberg saw that Luckenbill had strayed a bit far from goal and could score with a shot from 37 meters.

A worse than usual Mallbacken vas completely run over in the first half by a speedy and triggerhappy Djurgården with Elin Ekblom particulary good, setting up both Kalmari and Victoria Svensson as well as scoring herself - directly in goal with a corner-kick. Mallbacken's coach Mikael Fahlén managed to get his team together in half-time - he admitted that in the first half he was more nervous when his own team had the ball - and they stood up better in the second. Their new forward Kristie Swaving had huge problems against Djurgården's strong defense and didn't get to a single shot on goal.
In the second half Djurgården used the oppurtunity to let Dorte Dalum Jensen and Annemarie Norlin, both back after long time injuries, get some time on the field.

Jitex' new signings have definitely made a difference. In the away match against malmö they lost 1-6. Although scoreless this time, they put up a much better fight. Kristin Luckenbill did good in goal and they managed to stand up pretty good against Malmö's strong midfield. In spite of running the show most of the time, Malmö didn't create many dangerous scoring opportunities. Both their goals game from set pieces. Emma Wilhemsson was the most efficient in a box shuffle after a Malmö corner-kick and when Danish winger Nanna Johansen didn't give Jitex defense any other option than bringing her down, Asthildur Helgadottir didn't have any problems converting the penalty kick.

Goals: 0-1 Madelaine Edlund (5), 0-2 Lina Johansson (27)
Attendance: 423

With important players Sitch and Smajic suspended (both red-carded against Malmö) it didn't really help Bälinge that Kacey White was back from her stint with the US national team. Sunnanå took the lead after a really nice combination only five minutes into the match and didn't let go. They filled in with a lot of players in their attacks and played aggressively in the box. When Lina Johansson scored the second a already rather pale Bälinge became even more harmless. "Sunnanå won all one-on-one situations, they played much more powerfull than we did", said Bälinge's coach Magnus Wikman.
Bälinge, that has left the latest five matches scoreless, still got a healthy 8 point distance to the relegation competition, but this could change rapidly unless they start gaining points.

Hammarby: Katarina Wicksell - Annica Svensson, Elin Sölveskog (72 Elin Härén), Linda Forsberg, Caitlin Fisher - Louise Fors, Therese Sandström, Jennie Jonsson, Marijke Callebaut, Sara Johansson - Emma Lundh (82 Jessica Landström)
Umeå:
Goals:
0-1 Hanna Ljungberg (25), 0-2 Hanna Ljungberg (78)
Attendance:  1,347
Umeå dominated the match completely, but Hammarby used their resources well with a defensive 4-5-1. Umeå's first goal came from one of Hammarby's few organized attacking attempts, when they were taken off guard by Umeå's pacy counter. Hammarby continued to try to give Umeå as little space as possible and managed to keep the score down, but, as Hanna Ljungberg said, it felt pretty safe for Umeå. Hammarby's youngsters Emma Lundh and Lollo Fors (both borned '89) impressed with their fearlessness. Umeå's patience payed off and gave them a new record suite of 39 Damallsvenskan matches without defeat.

KIF Örebro - Qbik 1 - 1 (0-0)
Örebro: Kristin Hammarström - Sara Linder, Ingrid Ericson, Stina Segerström, Keeley Dowling - Marie Hammarström, Hodan Siid-Ahmed, Elin Magnusson, Emelia Erixon - Kelly Schmedes, Pavlina Scasna
Qbik:
Goals:
0-1 Jennifer Meier (52), 1-1 Hodan Siid-Ahmed (86)
Attendance: 562

Qbik, without Anja Mittag who was playing with Germany, looked like they could go back home with their first win for the season, but once again they were punished close to the end. Neither of the teams impressed in a less than entertaining match. When Qbik took the lead from cool chip by Jennifer Meier, Örebro's Pia Sundhage made a couple of offensive changes and Qbik were pushed back for much of the remaining time. Finally Hodan Siid-Ahmed scored after a Örebro corner-kick and made it a draw. Örebro's Pavlina Scasna was the player of the match, but Qbik defender Faith Ikidi (just back from playing for Nigeria in the U20 World Championship) and debutant goalie Maria Ytrakis kept her scoreless.
Qbik coach Kjell Pettersson was happy for the point, but disappointed with the result. It seems like the team gets afraid when they get the lead instead of getting confident. It's so long since they won, it's almost like they don't beleive they can.
Örebro's Schmedes had to leave the match in the first half with a knee injury, uncertain how serious.

Linköping FC - Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC 3 - 0 (0-0)
Linköping: Ellinor Birath - Frida Östberg, Marie-Louise Skålberg, Charlotte Rohlin, Maria Lindström - Anna-Kaisa Rantanen, Petra Larsson, Caroline Seger, Maria Karlsson, Josefine Öqvist - Tiffeny Milbrett
Göteborg: Maria Edman - Marlene Sjöberg (85 Hanna Wadefalk), Frida Höglund, Sofia Dammström, Maria Nilsson - Sara Lindén, Jessica Julin, Salina Olsson, Camilla Schelin (70 Rebecca Ljungdahl) - Emmelie Farfa (75 Sofie Andersson), Lotta Schelin
Goals: 1-0 Frida Östberg (68), 2-0 Maria Aronsson (73), 3-0 Ann Westermark (84)
Attendance: 669
Linköping's substitute goalkeeper Ellinor Birath looked happy and pleased (just look here) when she was congratulated by her teammates after her shut-out. And it wasn't an easy job. Linköping was really in trouble the first part of the match and 0-0 at halftime was actually flattering. Lotta Schelin was a constant threat and Birath really had to stretch herself. Linköping had pulled back Frida Östberg to the defense to cover for Sara Larsson's absence and started with a defensive 4-5-1, but were more aggressive in the second half, which paid off. Frida Östberg scored on a direct free-kick and Göteborg lost much of their spirit. Towards the end substitutes Aronsson and Westermark both managed to run through Göteborg's defense and decide the match.

Match-day 14: Goal-fest in Umeå

Qbik - Sunnanå 1 - 3 (0-1)
Qbik:
Sunnanå:
Goals: 0-1 Rebecca Smith (11), 0-2 Lina Johansson (60), 0-3 Lina Johansson (62), 1-3 Jennifer  Meier (89)
Attendance: 468
Sunnanå were both tougher and quicker and never really threatened after their first goal. Qbik has considerably individual talent, like defender Jenny Hallstenson and forward  Anja Mittag, but they were having big problems playing as a team. Sunnanå took an important step away from the relegation zone, where it looks like Qbik will be fighting Jitex and Mallbacken for the last remaining spot above the line.

Umeå played better than against Bälinge last week, had more movement and creativity in the attack and also scored a couple of really good-looking goals. Hanna Ljungberg's two goals and 80 minutes on the field without any feelings of injury was also good news. But coach Jeglertz still thinks his team is too complacent, especially in the defense. "When we play the big games in Women's Cup we cannot afford to give away goals like this", he said.
There never was any doubt about the victory, and Jitex hadn't expected anything else; "But we scored three goals on Umeå at their home ground. Of course we feel good", said a pleased Jitex coach. He also had reason to be pleased with his recent reinforcements, both the two goalscorers and Leah Robinson who impressed in midfield. And pleased was probably also the just-turned-17 Sara Sjöstedt, who came on as a late substitute to make her Damallsvenskan debut and scored Jitex' third with a powerfull shot from 20 meters out.

Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC - Mallbacken IF 3 - 3 (1-0)
Göteborg: Maria Edman - Maria Nilsson, Sofia Dammström, Frida Höglund, Marlene Sjöberg - Camilla Schelin (72 Rebecca Ljungdahl), Frida Thydén, Sara Lindén, Emmelie Farfa - Lotta Schelin, Salina Olsson
Mallbacken:
Goals: 1-0 Lotta Schelin (32), 1-1 Kristin Ek (46), 2-1 Sara Lindén (58), 2-2 Maja Johansson (63), 2-3 Linda Ranström (86), 3-3 Lotta Schelin (89)
Attendance: 204
Mallbacken left Göteborg with one point and mixed feelings, coming back from behind twice to take the lead only to see Lotta Schelin, still in great goal-scoring form and showing how important she is for her team, score an equaliser in the last minutes. But coach Fahlén feels they're in a positive curve and gaining points on their relegation competitors Qbik and Jitex is good.
Göteborg seemed to relax after getting the lead in the first half and were taken aback by Mallbacken's surge forward in the second. Schelin saved the team from a defeat almost as embarrasing as the one against Hammarby last week. But still, coach Pringle pointed out, they created more during the first half today than they did during the entire hammarby match.

Djurgården/Älvsjö - Hammarby IF DFF 5 - 1 (2-0)
Djurgården: Bente Nordby - Kristin Bengtsson, Jane Törnqvist, Therese Brogårde, Sara Thunebro - Katrine Pedersen (68 Sofia Simonsson), Anna Hall, Linda Fagerström, Elin Ekblom - Laura Österberg Kalmari (85 Mimmi Nordlander-Andersson), Victoria Svensson
Hammarby: Katarina Wicksell - Annica Svensson, Elin Sölveskog, Karolina Rinman, Josefin Christensen (77 Elin Härén) - Louise Fors, Therese Sandström, Linda Forsberg, Jennie Jonsson, Marijke Callebaut (55 Emma Lundh) - Sara Johansson (84 Jessica Landström)
Goals: 1-0 Linda Fagerström (13), 2-0 Victoria Svensson (19), 3-0 Laura Kalmari (63), 4-0 Anna Hall (70), 4-1 Linda Forsberg (72), 5-1 Therese Brogårde (79)
Attendance: 654
Djurgården/Älvsjö is a much better team than Hammarby ("They have a team full of internationals, we have one player that sometimes is invited to come along and watch from the bench", Hammarby's coach En Perlskog complained) and when Hammarby's defense makes mistakes "almost as bad as Sweden's men against Germany" (to quote the TV commentary) it can't end any other way. In particular Victoria Svensson had a good day, being an essential part of all Djurgården's goals. This was shown on TV and provided better entertainment than last week, but still not a great game.

KIF Örebro - Linköpings FC 1 - 2 (0-1)
Örebro: Kristin Hammarström - Caroline Näfver, Stina Segerström, Keeley Dowling, Ingrid Ericson - Lena Andersson, Marie Hammarström (78 Kelly Schmedes), Hodan Siid-Ahmed, Elin Magnusson (90+5 Marina Pettersson), Emelia Ericsson - Louise Östman
Linköping: Hedvig Lindahl - Frida Östberg, Marie-Louise Skålberg, Charlotte Rohlin, Maria Lindström (Sandra Landberg) - Josefine Öqvist (Petra Larsson), Caroline Seger, Anna-Kaisa Rantanen, Maria Karlsson - Tiffeny Millbrett, Maria Aronsson (Ann Westermark)
Goals: 0-1 Josefine Öqvist (8), 1-1 Emelia Erixon (47), 1-2 Maria Karlsson (85)
Attendance: 502
Örebro, had to start without their key forwards Scasna (playing Word Cup qualifications for Czech republic) and Schmedes (injured?), and applied a defensive 4-5-1. Still Linköping scored already in the 8th minute after a nice play between Maria Aronsson and Josefine Öqvist. After that Linköping had problems getting through and Örebro managed to equalise from a set piece in the beginning of the second half. Linköping moved up Maria Karlsson to make it a 4-3-3 and shortly before the end it paid off when Karlsson managed to run free on her flank and score the winner.
But the victory was hard earned for Linköping. Maria Aronsson had to limp off with a contusion, Öqvist with stomach pains and, after all substitutions had been used, Sandra Landberg got a concussion and Charlotte Rohlin a bruised foot. And Hedvig Lindahl finished the match with a muscle strain, that will probably keep her from playing for a while.

Bälinge: Maja Åström - Karolina Mats, Fanta Cooper, Lina Andersson, Nera Smajic (77 red card) - Mikaela Björklund (58 Heidi Matinlassi), Mona Najib (68 Emma Lindqvist), Linda Sembrant, Minna Mustonen (Madelene Hagberg) - Amy Vermeulen, Julianne Sitch (78 red card).
Goals: 1-0 Therese Lundin (43)
Attendance: 464

Bälinge started strong and had after the first 30 minutes at least three really hot chances, including a shot in the woodwork, Sitch and Vermeulen creating a fairly powerfull attack. But Malmö (without Asthildur Helgadottir, away with Iceland's national team), was stronger in midfield and when they managed to get pace in their attacks, they also managed to score. In the second half Malmö had more control over the play, although they were never unchallenged. Not until Nera Smajic fouled Nanna Johansen (Malmö's player of the match) and got her second yellow, immideately followed by Julianne Sitch getting her second yellow for mouthing off to the referee.

Umeå: Sofia Lundgren - Anna Paulson, Karolina Westberg, Sanna Valkonen, Maria Bergkvist (81 Johanna Frisk) - Anne Mäkinen, Malin Moström, Lise Klaveness (74 Johanna Andersson) - Anna Sjöström, Hanna Ljungberg (35 Erika Karlsson), Marta

Attendance: 2,115
Umeå did what they had to do, but not more. They didn't score a single goal from the run of the play and Bälinge managed to hold their own during the second half. Umeå coach Jeglertz thought his players were a bit "to comfortable", prefering safe play on the midfield instead of challenging Bälinge's defense. Hanna Ljungberg felt her thigh injury and decided to step out after half an hour, mostly as precaution. This match was the match they picked for the Saturday afternoon football show on TV4, but I seriously believe that any other match would have provided better entertainment.

When the top team is playing like it can, this is how big the difference between top and bottom is in Damallsvenskan. Djurgården showed a great attacking play and could have scored even more. In spite of having to retrieve the ball from the net 6 times, Jitex 19 year old debutant goalkeeper Agnes Danielsson did good.

Hammarby: Katarina Wicksell - Annica Svensson, Elin Sölveskog, Karolina Rinman, Josefin Christensen - Louise Fors (81 Jessica Landström), Therese Sandström, Linda Forsberg, Jennie Jonsson, Marijke Callebaut (73 Emma Lundh) - Sara Johansson

Goals: 1-0 Sara Johansson (17), 2-0 Sara Johansson (24), 2-1 Salina Olsson (30), 3-1 Sara Johansson (41), 4-1 Sara Johansson (60)
Attendance: 204
Wise from the 4-0 trashing they recieved at Göteborg, Hammarby started with a defensive 4-1-4-1 formation, Sara Johansson as the lone striker. It took them 15 minutes to realise that Göteborg wasn't really that dangerous. Missing Johanna Almgren and Lotta Schelin is a problem for Göteborg, but that can't fully explain their dismal effort. Hammarby played with growing conficence and Sara Johansson was hot, hot, hot. All four goals had the Sara Johansson trademark - a pass from midfield, Sara runs away from her defenders and scores with a powerfull shot.

In the second half it looked pretty much like Mallbacken would get the longed-for win, that would get them out of the relegation zone. But then Örebro's coach Pia Sundhage decided to throw in everything forward. At an Örebro corner-shot, keeper Kristin Hammarström joined her 10 outfield players in front of Mallbacken's goal and headed in the equaliser. And Örebro wasn't satisfied with that, but kept pushing forward and Lolla Östman decided tha game a minute later.

Attendance: 431
Malmö, with important defenders Malin Levenstad and Dora Stefansdottir on the injury list, were pressed back in the first half and if not for Caroline Jönsson in goal Sunnanå would have had a comfortable lead. Back from the recess, Malmö played better with Danish international Nanna Johansen really dangerous on the right flank, controled the match and seemed to take home 3 points. But in extra-time Sunnanå got a free-kick, that Magdalena Esseryd managed to get straight into goal. Asthildur Helgadottir recieved a black eye from the Sunnanå defense and had to leave the pitch, but will be able to play next week.

Tiffeny Milbrett, who arrived from Vancouver only two days earlier, was only supposed to play a few minutes towards the end of the match, but Ann Westermark felt an old thigh injury and left the pitch already after 17 minutes. Milbrett showed her class from the minute she stepped on the field. Qbik were to slow and to static to be any threat to Linköping. They were missing two of their key players, defender Faith Ikidi (playing for Nigeria in the U-20 World Championships) and midfielder Maureen Mmadu (suspension), but that probably wouln't have changed the outcome.

Malmö seems to be continously negotiating with Asthildur Helgadottir's Icelandic club Breidablik for extensions of her Swedish stay and had just before the match announced that she will be in Sweden for the 4th and 5th Damallsvenskan games. After watching the match between Malmö and Örebro you can understand why. Asta was the centerpiece in Malmö's offensive half and almost everything revolved around her. "If we want to replace her, we need to get somebody like Birgit Prinz", commented Malmö's coach Jörgen Petersson after the match.
The first half of the match was fairly even with a lot of midfield play, but as the match went on Malmö showed they were the better side. Both goals came from passes by Frida Nordin, who so far has been sucessfull filling in for last year's right side player Formiga. Keeley Dowling made her debut for Örebro and was calm, composed, efficient in defense and named Player of the Match for Örebro. Örebro's Pia Sundhage commented that coming from a 8-1 defeat at Malmö last season, this showed they are on the rght path.

Goals: 1-0 Lina Andersson (12), 2-0 Kacey White (73)
Attendance: 512
Both sides started cautiously with deep defense, which gave a rather uneventfull first half. Bälinge tried to get in from Mustonen and White on the wings. This worked once, when Kacey White managed to get through to Lina Andersson, who scored 1-0. In the second half Mallbacken, hunting for an equaliser, pushed up their defense, which opened big areas for Bälinge's counters. Kacey White ran away on a long Linda Sembrant pass and could score undisturbed.
Mallbacken's coach Peter Wennberg commented that even if the match as a whole was even, Mallbacken lacks the edge in attack that Bälinge has.

Goals: 1-0 Anna Nilsson (53), 1-1 Linda Fagerström (62)
Attendance: 708
Djurgården were the better side, directing most of the play, but are having problems interacting in the offensive area. When they tried to push up the play in the second half they made themselves vulnerable to Qbik's counters. Anna Nilsson managed to break free, took a powerfull shot from distance that Nordby had her fingers on, hit the horizontal, the back on the ground before in finally backspinned into net. Djurgården pressed front even more after the goal, but all that succeeded was a cross from right by Linda Fagerström, that probably was steered into goal with a touch from Qbik's defense.
Qbik's coach Ljell Petersson declared himself  "completely satisfied" with the result, while Djurgården's Benny Persson was less so. The team played good, but by the number of chances they created there should be more goals.

Göteborg continued the tactics they successfully pulled off against Malmö last match - not playing to win, but playing not to lose. They didn't get up front much, but defended well and an almost fluke shot by the lesser known Schelin sister got them a draw.

Jitex BK - Hammarby IF 2-2 (2-1)
Jitex: Anna Rehnlund - Linda Fyhr, Emma Herbring, Amelie Rybeck, Sophia Lindorsson - Lisa Christensson (63 Jennie Ringkvist), Therese Björk (88 Therese Andersson), Malin Normelli, Jennie Svensson, Sofia Skog (60 Kajsa Tornfalk) - Therese Bjurenlind
Hammarby: Katarina Wicksell - Annica Svensson, Jessica Landström, Karolina Rinman, Elin Härén - Louise Fors (Caitlin Fisher), Therese Sandström, Jennie Jonsson, Marijke Callebaut (Lisa Björkvik) - Sara Johansson, Linda Forsberg
Goals: 1-0 Sofia Skog (1), 2-0 Therese Björk (26), 2-1 Therese Sandström (44), 2-2 Marijke Callebaut (53)
Attendance: 325
Jitex got a dream start when Sofia Skog could put the ball in goal after a great pass from Lisa Christensen and when Therese Björk increased the lead 25 minutes later that was only Jitex second shot on goal. Hammarby, that had had the ball most of the time and directing the play became increasingly frustrated with not being able to penetrate the hard fighting Jitex defense. Hammarby's fast attacker Sara Johansson, who has been successfull in the team's earlier matches, was largely kept out of the play by Jitex centre defenders  Emma Herbring and Amelie Rybeck. Hammarby's pressure still paid off with goals from a high ball and a corner shot, but Jitex didn't lose their compusure and managed to save the draw.

Match-day 3: Narrow win for Umeå over Djurgården

Attendance: 461
Kopparbergs/Göteborg went into the match with a 12 game losing streak, often conceding 4, 5 or even more goals, so when Lotta Schelin managed to secure a draw in the last minutes of the game, Göteborg celebrated it like a win.
Göteborg started with a 4-5-1 and managed to get hold of the midfield large parts of the first half and creating a lot of problems for Malmö's defense, where Johanna Rosén had big difficulties with Lotta Schelin. Salina Olsson got a penalty kick after recieving an unneccesary hard tackle in then back and scored the penalty kick herself. After the recess Malmö equalised almost  immediately as Therese Sjögran could chip in the ball over Maria Edman and managed to turn the flow of the match. Goals by Helgadottir and Nordin oput them in what seemed like a secure 3-1 lead. But Lotta Schelin, who was moved up to the attack alongside Salina Olsson towards the end of the match, seems to be in her life's best form and beat a Malmö that only was waiting for the whistle to blow twice.
The result in the overall entertaining and exciting game gives Göteborg their first point this season and coach Martin Pringle at least some breating space before he goes on to face Umeå and Djurgården the next two matches. Malmö's Jörgen Petersson was disappointed with the result, but said that he didn't expect this younger version of Malmö FF to be as consistent as last years'.

Goalless draws against the two newcomers is not the opening Linköping had wished for or even expected. Just as in the Jitex match, Linköping dominated and had a big advantage in possession and showed great play the first 20 minutes. But Bälinge had prepared themselves for defense, putting two defensive players in their midfield (Matinlassi and Sembrandt) and pulling back the defense line as far back as possible. They were succesfull in their attempts to keep Linköping from getting into dangerous positions. Linköping showed, like before, that they have problems getting through a tight defense and the longer the match went on the more they opted for a long ball trying to find a forward behind the defense line. Josefine Öqvist tried to rip Bälinge's defense apart with ambitious runs forward, but was to alone. Öqvist commented after the match that she wasn't really worried over the two draws, but not scoring getting a problem for the team.

Match-day 3: KIF Örebro to the top

KIF Örebro:

With a convincing 3-0 win on Saturday afternoon, KIF Örebro moved up to the first place in Damallsvenskan. Umeå and Bälinge are the only teams that might pass them when the remaining 5 matches are played today, Sunday. Neither KIF Örebro nor Sunnanå really convinced in the first half, but Örebro got an important goal just before the half-time when Marie Hammarström converted a pass from the outside by Emilia Erixon. The second half started with yet another Örebro goal when Louise Östman outran an unprepared Sunnanå defense and didn't make any mistake one on one with Sunnanå's keeper. After that it was Örebro's match. Sunnanå was second on the ball most of the time and Louise Östman could yet again score to secure the win 10 minutes from the end. National team coach Thomas Dennerby declared he was impressed with Östman's "clinical finishes".

Örebro's American reinforcements Schmedes and Dowling are due to arrive today and might appear already against Malmö on Wednesday, but it now seems like the team has overcome their scoring problems without that help.

Match-day 2: Bälinge miss penalty kick in Örebro draw

Goals: 1-0 Kacey White (49), 1-1 Emilia Erixon (59)
Attendance: 1,248
The home team had the first half, creating much more than Örebro. Örebro's goalie Kristin Hammarström kept the match even with a couple of really good saves, including a one-on one with Kacey White and Emma Lindqvist's 37th minute penalty kick. Örebro's notorious lack of attacking edge showed throughout the first half. Only minutes into the second half Kacey White could better herself, catching up with a long ball from the midfield and chipping it over Hammarström in goal. Then the game suddenly turned. Örebro began pressing forward and Emilia Erixon could equalise on a header. All in all it was a pretty even match and a fair result.

Attendance: 532
Two first half goals by Sara Johansson, who ran through Mallbacken's defense, decided an otherwise typical season opening game, cautious play and rather uneventfull. Mallbacken demonstrated that they once again will have to rely on defense to get through the season. "The kind of game that usually ends 0-0, but Hammarby had Sara Johansson", commented Mallbacken's disappointed coach Mikael Fahlén.

Linköping did just about everything to win the match, except score goals. Jitex was completely outplayed most of the match. Linköping created 19 corner shots against Jitex 2 with Caroline Seger, Maria Karlsson and Frida Östberg as the driving force. Jitex, that sometimes seemed complately lost on the pitch, was saved by brilliant goalkeeping from Anna Rehnlund. "It seemed hopeless after a while, but we managed to pull ourself together", commented Jitex defender Amelie Rybeck. Linköping's Frida Östberg thought the team seemed to get complacent from their superiority on the field and didn't put in the extra effort needed.

Umeå coach André Jeglertz admitted that he got a bit nervous when Qbik both reduced Umeå's 2 goal lead and equalised towards the end of the first half. But even if Qbik is a better team than last year, with imports Ikidi, Mmadu and Meier playing important roles, they still have some way to go before thay can challenge. In the second half Umeå's superiority showed and their 5-2 win could and maybe even should have been greater. Still Qbik's coach Kjell Petersson was satisfied with what the team showed in the first half.

Göteborg, that has replaced retired striker Heidi Kackur with Hammarby's Salina Olsson, still seems to have the same problems as last year. They can play pretty nice football, but they have big problems making anytning out of it. Instead Sunnanå's Umeå transfer Maria Nordbrandt and her co-striker Madelaine Edlund decided an otherwise fairly even match with two fast goals in the second half.

Match-day 2: Malmö stuns Djurgården

Goals:  0-1 Sara Thunebro (15), 1-1 Therese Lundin (26), 2-1 Ásthildur Helgadóttir (29), 3-1 Nilla Fischer (45+1), 4-1 Therese Lundin (79)
Attendance: 1,028
Malmö FF out played a lack-lustre Djurgården/Älvsjö to gain a deserved 4-1 win. Malmö's attacking duo Therese Lundin and Asthildur Helgadottir, that last season had 38 goals between them, proved just as lethal this year.

Djurgården/Älvsjö started best, in particular Laura Kalmari proved dangerous from her left field position, and when Sara Thunebro scored on a rebound after 15 minutes the lead seemed fair. Malmö's somewhat reconstructed defense (Malin Levenstad had been delayed in Austria and didn't get to Malmö in time to start) seemed shaky and Caroline Jönsson had to stretch herself to tidy up defense mistakes. But already after some 20 minutes Malmö began to get a hold on the game, winning the midfield and making good use of the outsides. 1-1 came from a Frida Nordin cross which Therese Lundin converted and three minutes later Asthildur Helgadottir headed in a great free-kick from Therese Sjögran. When Nilla Fischer in first half overtime chipped the ball over Bente Nordby in Djurgården's goal the outcome was decided.

The second half was entirely Malmö's. The team played composed, comfortable with ball, good passes and making frequent use of Helgadottir as a target player. Djurgården's defense had big problems handling her and Lundin, who could score 4-1 against a fumbling Djurgården defense. Victoria Svensson and Laura Kalmari on the other hand were mostly unsuccessfull trying to penetrate Malmö's defense, that had shaped up a lot since the start of the match.

Malmö's Lundin commented that the win was really good for the team's confidence after yet again being downplayed in the preseason speculations.

Match-day 1 opinions: It can only get better

Almost nothing is good in the land of Swedish women's football. Västerbottens Folkblad's Magnus Johansson writes that Umeå's 2-0 victory over Malmö "almost felt like a defeat". Umeå had the ideas and organisation on the field, but had huge problems playing into positions to score from. Malmö could work themselves back into the match against a frustrated Umeå. Umeå's coach Jeglertz even had to bring in Elaine (substituting young debutant Lisa Dahlqvist) from the bench to win the midfield battle. But the big problem was Umeå's inefficiency in Malmö's defensive area. Klaveness was very ambitious, but mostly just ran into Malmö's solid defense, and Marta was nice to watch but unproductive. Umeå's problems to score made Malmö a real threat all the way until the final minutes of the match.

In KIF Örebro's local newspaper, Nerikes Allehanda, columnist Anders Uddling found one good thing to note about Pia Sundhage's team: the won. But all reports about their goalscoring problems turned out to be true. Louise Östman needs scores of good opportunities to get one in goal and Hodan Siid-Ahmed must have been put in the attack by mistake (but she did good when moved back to the midfield after halftime). Örebro's players fired away loads of shots against Jitex' goal, but very rarely anything remotely dangerous. Maybe Sundhage's encouraging her players to dare to try to score should be moderated by a "but only if you see a real opportunity".

Göteborgsposten's Mats Härd had more reason to be downhearted. He's seen three of the four Göteborg teams in the men's and women's top leagues disappointing heavily in their home openers. Kopparbergs/Göteborg underperformed hugely for a team that plans to challenge the top. They had lots of possession, but not much quality. It was easier to find traces of decent football in Bälinge's few attacking attempts.

I did find one happy camper though, Håkan Wikström in Upsala Nya Tidning, Bälinge's local. "There is something about Nera Smajic" headlines his column, praising the robust outside defender, who was moved by coach Wikman from her usual position to the left to take care of Göteborg's Lotta Schelin at the right. When Smajic got tired in the second half, and Schelin began to feel a little bit to fast, she almost turned brutal and was subbed out by her coach before the first red card of the season would appear. It wasn't a beautiful game - a crappy field, a limping play and the favourites from Göteborg feeling the pressure - but Maja Åström was inspired in goal and Fanta Cooper played wonderful defense and Håkan Wikström hopes for much more fun when the grass has turned greener and the foreign forwards has began to understand how their coach wants them to play.

Matchday 1: Bälinge upsets Göteborg

Djurgården/Älvsjö - Sunnanå SK  3-0 (2-0)
Djurgården: Bente Nordby - Linda Lekander, Kristin Bengtsson, Therese Brogårde, Ann-Marie Norlin (88 Malin Engdahl) - Katrine Pedersen(79 Anna Hall), Linda Fagerström, Elin Ekblom - Laura Kalmari, Victoria Svensson, Sara Thunebro(84 Sofia Simonsson)

Attendance: 626
When a really long Katrine Pedersen throw-in managed to find it's way into the net via a misjudged attempt to grab the ball from Sunnanå goalkeeper Åsa Berglund, making it 2-0, it showed Djurgården/Älvsjö had both the skill and luck needed to win. Djurgården/Älvsjö pretty much owned the match, much thanks to their superior pace, often passing the ball on the first touch. This also created a quite a lot of misplaced passes, but was still more than the usually reliable Sunnanå defense could cope with. Victoria Svensson had a good day, scoring the opener with a nice chip after recieving a well played pass from Linda Fagerström and heading the ball to Ann-Marie Norlin, who could score 3-0 from point blank range.
Dagens Nyheter:
Dif/Älvsjö gjorde mål på inkast
Djurgården/Älvsjö: pictures
Just a small footnote here btw. Pedersen's throw-in goal really should be taken down as an own goal by Sunnanå's Berglund, since you cannot score directly from a throw-in. But the Swedish FA's website attributes the goal to Pedersen, so I stick with that. Until further notice, at least.

The home team dictated the play large parts of the match, but once again showed their weakness in the attack. Jitex created more than they have managed during the preseason, but their defense started to weaken and fall back during the later parts of the match. KIF's Pia Sundhage made some changes at halftime and managed to build more preassure against the Jitex goal. It still wasn't until the last minutes of the match that the newly signed midfield talent Lena Andersson headed in the gamewinner on a cross from substitute Emilia Erixon.

Göteborg had most of the possession and created more forward than Bälinge, but suffered from the same inability to control the match against weaker opposition that had them lose to teams like Mallbacken last season. Bälinge's defense, with Nera Smajic and Fanta Cooper excelling aginst Lotta Schelin and Salina Olsson, and great goalkeeping from Maja Åström kept them in the match when Göteborg escalated their attack in the second half. Bälinge's initial 4-3-3 formation also began to look a lot like 4-5-1 towards the end of the game. Göteborg had four starters on the sick-list (among them Sweden's U21 defender Maria Karlsson, who is probably out of action for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury), but should still have been able to show a better play, both technically and tactically. Bälinge's midfielder Maria Thuré scored the winner on a shot from some 30 meters out.

Attendance: 1,843
On a cold and foggy Gammliavallen (still a decent crowd showed up) Umeå had Malmö on the defense for the better part of the match. Umeå played composed, comfortable with the ball, excellent passes and Anne Mäkinen doing great in the midfield. But the Umeå domination (10-1 in corners the first half) did not result in much. Malin Moström's early goal was a give-away from Malmö's otherwise good defense and Asthildur Helgadottir had a goal denied on a not all that obvious offside call. The decision from Umeå's coach André Jeglertz to go for a 4-4-2 instead of Umeå's usual 4-3-3 might have been made more to prevent Malmö from challenging midfield possession than lack of forwards. Malmö's Therese Sjögran and Nilla Fischer proved in the second half, when Malmö managed to push up the team from only defending, that they were able to do that. But Umeå's Valkonen and Westberg centre defense kept Malmö's attack from most dangerous situations. In the last part of the match Malmö yet again broke the Umeå dominance to charge heavily for an equaliser and made Umeå a bit stressed, but Umeå's Lise Klaveness, one of the two forwards for the day, managed to score what she called "a crap goal" as an otherwise good Caroline Jönsson in Malmö's goal misjudged her chip attempt. All in all a good opening match with a fair result was national team manager Thomas Dennerby's verdict.
