Brazil wins gold and travels to Umeå
Brazil with Umeå's Marta and Elaine defeated USA's U20 team 5-0 in the Pan American Games and got their gold medals in front of some 70,000 at the Maracana stadium. Marta scored two goals, both on penalty-kicks. There is a video from Brazilian broadcaster Globo, where you also can see Marta with her feet in cement. Her name and footprints will, as the first of a female player, be forever displayed at Maracana's Walk of Fame side by side with the likes of Pelé, Ronaldo and Franz Beckenbauer. Picture here. The news of the Walk of Fame inauguration was presented like this on Swedish television.
For those with proficiency in Portugese or with enough patience to use babelfish, Globo.com is a great site to check out the current Martamania in Brazil.
The Brazilian World Cup team will travel to Sweden and Umeå for their final training camp before going to China. They will arrive around August 20 and stay for about 10 days, revealed Umeå's general manager Roland Arnqvist yesterday. A warm-up match between Umeå and Brazil is scheduled as well as another match somewhere in the Stockholm area, opposition yet to be decided.
Brazil had a similar camp in Umeå preparing for the 2004 Olympics and they were appearently satisfied enough to want to repeat it.
