Umeå's Maria Bergkvist forced to quit, Frida Östberg returns (?)

Umeå's veteran defender Maria Bergkvist will leave football after the UEFA Cup match against Rapide Wezemaal later this week. A persistent knee-injury cuts the 30 year old's career short as her doctor tells her she has to stop playing. Bergkvist had already agreed with Umeå on an extension of the contract over 2008 when she recieved the verdict from her doctor. Bergkvist says that she has been hurting since a knee operation last year, but thought it could be fixed afterv this season. Instead she got the verdif´ct that she has to stop playing if she wants to be able to do simple things like walk in stairs in the future.
Maria Bergkvist has been in the team for 9 years, won 6 Swedish championships and two UEFA Cups.

Possible replacement for Bergkvist? Frida Östberg! Umeå newspapers claims that the former Linköping player already has agreed to return to Umeå. Umeå's manager Roland Arnqvist admits he has been in touch with Östberg "and we will hopefully talk some more shortly", but he denies there is any deal and Frida Östberg refuses to comment. Umeå's main competitor here is Kif Örebro, where Richard Holmlund says that he has been talking to Frida a couple of months, that he would love to sign her but that he doubts that she wants to start over again in a team like Örebro.
