UEFA Women's Cup: Umeå narrowly wins group after Russian pressure

Two Marta goals in the first half saved a draw against and the group win over Russian champions Rossiyanka. The Umeå team, with Marta starting for the first tme during this mini-yournament, seemed tired, worn-out and not a little cranky. The mood was irritated from both sides, something that wasn't helped by the unpredictable refereeing, that ended with 9 yellow cards. The Russians came out strong, playing fast and organized and pressuring Umeå. Umeå still, against the run of the play, managed to get two goals up, much thanks to Marta. In the second half the Russians hit back twice in a few second half minutes. Coach Jeglertz was happy to escape with a draw, calling Rossiyanka "the best team we've met this year", but very unhappy with the refereeing. "This isn't acceptable. In these three matches in the UEFA Cup group play we recieved more warnings than during the entire league season."

In the earlier matches against the groups two minnows, Romanian Clujana and Belorussian Vitebsk, Umeå gave the impression of a team that was mostly going through the motions. At the same time both Clujana and Vitebsk played everyone behind the ball and mainly tried to make scoring as hard as possible for umeå, but not showing much ambitions forward. Not an unreasonable choice of tactics, but both Jeglertz and his team were clearly unhappy about it. Umeå is still much to strong to be defeated by that kind of tactics and clearly won both games, but with unimpressing scorelines.
