Umeå's Klaveness quits Norwegian national team

Umeå IK's midfielder/forward Lise Klaveness has, following her exclusing from the Norway team that will play the Euro qualifier against Russia next week, announced that she has decided to put an end to her national team career. The 26 years old reveals in a statement that coach Bjarne Berntsen told her after the World Cup, that she didn't fit in his plans. "I have done everything I can to be stronger, fitter and to improve my football skills, but 'fit in' - I have no idea how you do that", she explains her decision. Klaveness has been on Norwegian national teams for the last 12 years and says she will miss "going on road-trips with the girls", but will now devote herself to club football.

Norway teammate Ragnhild Gulbrandsen expressed her understanding for Klaveness decision and said that coach Berntsen had problems handling players who are too independent, on and off the field. "You can't treat everybody just the same", Gulbrandsen said in an interview with Norwegian radio. "You have to give a player like Lise some freedom on the pitch".

Was not expecting this news, I know Lise didn't get much time in the WC but this is something else. The coach needs a reality check people are people and everyone is different, he should embrace these differences rather than remove them.
Glad to hear teammates (ex) are ready to stick up for Lise, rather than in the Solo situation, whereby her teammates left her high and dry!

Well, Ragnhild has retired from the team and can speak freely. But Norwegian players do seem less concerned about publicly contradicting their coach. There was a exchange of views regarding Norway's performance after the 3rd place match, where some players, among them if I remember right both the Gulbrandsens, disagreed with their coach's assesment that they didn't have stamina enough for such a long tournament. The players instead questioned Norway's tactics and their inability to gain possession during the USA match. And they were not happy about being accused by their coach of being illoyal for speaking out. Still, Berntsen has been very successful - taking Norway to a European Championship final and a World Cup semifinal since he took charge says a lot.

And Bjarne Berntsen is not the most sensitive guy you can find. He gave Klaveness her notice in the middle of the night, after the 14 hour flight from China when the team were waiting for their luggage at Oslo Airport.

This detail should have been in the story you reported; that is absurd! Anyway, can you please clarify the terrible thing Klaveness did to upset the coach? I am not sure I understand, because you said the Gulbrs. both replied to the coach's comments, but what about Klaveness? And is this was you mean by independence "off the field"?
