National team: New and old players for Ireland and USA

The eagerly awaited return to the national team by Victoria Svensson, Lotta Schelin and even Hanna Ljungberg was announced by national team head coach Thomas Dennerby as he disclosed the squad for the Euro qualifier against Ireland on June 25 and for the friendly against USA July 5.

Victoria Svenson has already returned from her injury spell and her scoring twice against Umeå last weekend is really all there needs to be said, commented Dennerby. Schelin hasn't returned to her club team yet, but has been looking good enough in training for Dennerby to nominate her. And he doesn't pick Hanna Ljungberg, who didn't dress for her club team in tonight's top match at Malmö, for Ireland, but wants her on the squad against USA.

He also picked two fairly fresh faces, Malmö's defender Malin Levenstad and Umeå's midfielder Lisa Dahlqvist. "They have shown a consistently high level in the league" was Dennerby's comment. They both made their national team debuts on Cyprus early this year, when Sweden fielded a "baby team" without most of the big names but still defeated England and Norway. Dennerby obviously thinks they have proven worthy bigger assignments, possibly even the Olympics. I don't think that he, at this stage, picks players for the national team, that aren't under consideration for China.
