I think it's great that Östberg got the Diamond Ball, and I'm surprised to hear you say there's been so much criticism of this. She played consistently well over several quite different competitions (league, UEFA, Olympics) this calendar year, and surely that counted in the judges' minds. Announcing retirement right before the ceremony probably didn't hurt, but still... who else was in the hunt for this award that can feel hard-down by?

Östberg: Only the Umeå newspapers and Anja Gatu (the woman who together with Sundhage presented the award to Östberg) in Sydsvenskan has argued that it was a good choice. Most others has been pushing for their own local favorite (Schelin, Svensson, Sjögran) or simply exasperating a "Who? Why?". Two of the most respected authorities in Swedish women's football, journalists Jennifer Wegerup (Aftonbladet) and Annette Börjesson (SR, Damfotboll.com) questioned the decision. "Incomprehensible" and "not the right choice". Not that she is a bad player, but there is no way you would pick Niklas Alexandersson (her counterpart in the men's team, retiring def/mf with 100+ caps). Wegerup even argues that it's hard to convince people to take the women's game seriously with decisions like this.



Retiring age: I haven't made the stats, but a lot of the bigger names plays on close to 35, some even after that.
