Umeå: Frida Östberg returns, Lise Klaveness leaves
First Umeå announced the anticipated return by Frida Östberg. The 30 year old defender/midfielder said it felt great to be back home again. Umeå has been trying to persuade her since the summer, but Frida had umeå waiting for her answer: "I wanted to feel that I had the right motivation to continue. You don't take a place in Umeå by just going 90 %".
While Östberg returned to Umeå, Lise Klaveness returned home from Umeå. After a lot of thinking, she decided to go back to Asker in the Norwegian league. She was sad to leave Umeå, but after finishing her law studies she felt she had to return to Norway if she wanted to establish herself on the work market. She stated that she wants to use her experience from her two years in Sweden to help making Asker the Umeå of Norway.
Young midfielder Lisa Dahlqvist also had to do a lot of thinking and some feeling of home-sickness tempted her to move south, but she finally decided to accept a new one year contract with Umeå. The 20 year old has more or less made her break-through in the team during the 2007 season, her second with the team, and is now a regular starter.
Young attacker Erika Karlsson was one of the few Umeå players that did not get an offer for a renewed contract. She has had problems breaking into the squad and the competition for forward positions doesn't seem to be easier next year. She hasn't signed anything, but will almost certainly be moving to Sunnanå, where she is hoping to get more playing time.
Umeå now seems to have signed 19 players for 2008, but that includes one 16 and one 17 year old players that might not be first team material yet. The club haven't yet declared that they are finished with the 2008 squad and the 2007 18 player side proved vulnerable to injuries, so there might still be some movement.

Djurgården: Losing experience
Instead of their expected retirement, two of Djurgården's most influental players decided to take up offers from other teams. As earlier reported defender Jane Törnqvist decided to go to Göteborg and keeper Bente Nordby has gone to French champions Olympique Lyonnais. And in Lyon, Nordby will be joined by former Djurgården full-back Dorte Dalum Jensen.
As a pretty much straight forward replacement Djurgården signed AIK's 24 year old full-back Madelene Göras (former Umeå and Bälinge) for Dorte Dalum's position and Emma Lundh (who signed for AIK) found a replacement in Finland's 19 year old attacker Linda Sällström. Sällström has been watched by Djurgården's management for some while and trained with and played a friendly for Djurgården this summer. Sällström has so far three caps for the full Finland national side.

AIK: Looking for experience and goalscorers
AIK impressed press and competitors alike with their very ambitious signings for the 2007 season, getting starters from Umeå, Djurgården and Göteborg to join the newcomers. Nonetheless, it almost ended in disaster when AIK just barely managed to renew their Damallsvenskan contract. But this hasn't slowed down the club's plans to win the championship in 2010. They started in November by picking midfielders and defenders - Mäkinen and Sembrandt from Bälinge and talented Louise Fors from Hammarby. But the team's main problem during 2007 has been goalscoring. And over a few days they could announce the signings of three proven offenvise players: Djurgården's Elin Ekblom and Emma Lundh and Annica Sjölund from Åland United in the Finnish league.
Elin Ekblom, a gifted winger who has been behind a lot of Djurgården's goals with her on-target crosses from right, had almost decided to retire at 26. But she was convinced by AIK's offer, which she said was a good offer from a football and financial view, while at the same time being possible to combine with her day-job.
18 year old Emma Lundh has in spite of her young age been close to regular for Djurgården with 13 starts this season, often pairing up with Victoria Svensson in the attack. But she explained at Djurgården's website that even if she has learned a lot during the year, she doesn't feel that that she is ready to play at that level yet. Annica Sjölund finally, is a Finnish 22 year old forward with 5 years in the Finnish top league and 13 caps for Finland.
Finally the club added a 16 year old full-back from Brommapojkarna's highly rated youth programme, Elin Karlsson.

Kristianstad: Newcomers reinforcing
Newcomers Kristianstads DFF did, after much talk, finally sign midfielder Erla Arnadottir. The 24 year old brings a lot of experience to the young Kristianstad team with 22 caps for Iceland, four damallsvenskan seasons (Stattena, Sunnanå and Mallbacken) and recently one season in the American W-league with Jersey Sky Blue. Arnadottir became Kristianstad's second signing, Göteborg keeper Maria Edman was the first, and was soon followed by a third, the 21 year old defender Therese Persson from 1st division side Husie. The club knows this isn't enough to make their stay in Damallsvenskan more than one year long and made steps to try to convince national team attacker Maria Aronsson (11 caps), recently dropped by her club Linköping. But Kristianstad's sport director Ulf Berglund is cautious: "We are not the only ones that are interested. She is a very good player and there ought to be several clubs wanting to see her on their team".

Linköping finding more teenagers and other player news
Linköping has declared that they wants to sign a conmtract with Dalsjöfors 20 year old forward Lisa Nilsson, who had a try-out with the team earlier this fall. Nilsson says she hasn't seen the proposed contract yet, but "if there isn't anything really weird in the contract, I'll sign it".
16 year old Maria Svensson, a big and strong defender from nearby 1st division club Saltängen, has finalized a deal with Linköping.
And another 16 year old, Tilda Heimersson from nearby Smedby, has trained with Linköping most of the fall. Heimersson is team captain for Sweden's 16 year olds and has impressed coach daniel Pettersson. "I see her as a player for the first team already".

Bälinge's sport director Conny Sjögren says that he is almost certain that he will win the battle with Umeå Södra over Finnish midfielder Katri Nokso-Koivisto. "I've just mailed the last draft of the contract to Katri and it will surprise me a lot if she doesn't sign", he says. Bälinge has already lost a couple of important players, like Anne Mäkinen (AIK) and Linda Sembrant (also AIK) and several other are still undecided. Nokso-Koivisto's signature is important. Sjögren says the club might sign one or two new Swedish players, but are mostly looking abroad. "In Sweden we can't find the right player quality and experience for the right price".
Upsala Nya Tidning: Nokso-Koivisto stannar i Bälinge
And I almost thought he had a contract for life, but Umeå IK's head coach Andrée Jeglertz has just signed for 2008, his fifth season with the club. "We are more than pleased with Andrée" says manager Roland Arnqvist.

Jane Törnqvist to Göteborg, Lollo Fors to AIK and June Pedersen stays in Umeå
Veteran defender Jane Törnqvist, who according to most sources would leave football after this season, has decided to leave Djurgården but instead surprisingly signed with Kopparbergs/Göteborg. The 32 year old Törnqvist has 14 Damallsvenskan seasons and 109 caps and will bring a wealth of experience to new Göteborg coach Torbjörn Nilsson's team.
Göteborgsposten: Jane Törnqvist till Göteborgs FC
Hammarby's young star Lollo Fors has finally decided her new address after parting with her old club. Courted by LDB FC Malmö and Djurgården, she decided for AIK. The technically gifted 18 year old made her Damallsvenskan debut already at 14 and has the last two years been an influental player in Hammarby's team.

Bente Nordby to Lyon ?
Djurgården's goalkeeper Bente Nordby has got an offer that might make her reconsider her earlier decision to end her career and move back to Norway. French champions, and Umeå's UEFA Women's Cup semifinal opponents, Olympique Lyonnaise has contacted the Norwegian keeper with an offer. The Lyon club recently lost their starting goalkeeper Véronique Pons to a serious injury and contacted Bente Nordby. She visited the club on November 15 to see the facilities and talk to the management. She hasn't made up her mind yet, but Lyon calls the contacts "advanced". And from the interview with her, published on OL's website, it seems like she is thinking seriously about the offer. She says it would be great to get to know another country and it would be a fun way to end her career. The possibility to win the UEFA Women's Cup with Lyon is also a draw. Playing these matches at the highest level is "la plus belle chose" for a footballer, she says.

The French football site Foot69.fr also mentiones Malmö's Caroline Jönsson as a Lyon target in their search for goalkeeper to replace their injured Véronique Pons. But this would prove much more complicated, as Jönsson is tied to Malmö until the 2009 season.

Umeå finds teenager, newcomer clubs signs veterans
Umeå IK has signed 17 year old forward Sofia Jakobsson from Östers IF in the 1st division. The young goalscorer, who has been courted by a host of other Damallsvenskan sides, has signed a two year deal with Umeå. Joining Umeå is a bit like coming home for her, as she has her family in Örnsköldsvik just south of Umeå and started playing for Hägglunds IoFK, the same club as Malin Moström and Frida Östberg, before she moved south to join Öster's youth program. Jakobsson scored scored 12 goals for Öster this season and also played in all U-18 national team matches.

Umeå Södra's proposition to Finnish national team defender Petra Vaelma turned out to be successful, as the player reveals that she has decided to sign the offered contract. Her Finland and Bälinge teammate Katri Nokso-Koivisto says that she hasn't made up her mind yet, but will join Umeå Södra if she doesn't decide to stay in Bälinge.

The other newcomer, Kristianstads DFF, has not been able to finalize any transfers, but Icelandic national team midfielder Erla Arnadottir, a 23 year old Damallsvenskan veteran, is close now - "we just haven't signed any papers yet", says Arnadottir. Kristianstad also have two division 1 players on try-outs, Husie defender Therese Persson and Stattena forward Mia Westerbladh. Two former Qbik players, Therese Björck and Amelie Rybeck, will come to Kristianstad for try-outs next week.

Elaine signs two year deal with Umeå
Umeå IK revealed earlier this week that their Brazilian midfielder Elaine has signed a renewed contract, reaching over the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Umeå's coach Andrée Jeglertz says that Elaine has developed into a world class player during her three year stay in Umeå and that she shows great loyalty to the club to sign a two year contract.
Västerbottens Folkblad: Två år till i UIK för Elaine
The third international player that has been offered a contract by newly promoted Umeå Södra FF has turned out to be Finland's midfielder Katri Nokso-Koivisto. Nokso-Koivisto has played for Bälinge the 2007 season and before that with Finnish top side FC United together with goalkeeper Minna Meriluoto, who has signed for Södra, and defender Petra Vaelma, who is thinking over the club's proposition.
Västerbottenskuriren: Ytterligare en finska på gång till Södra
Linköping's 24 year old forward Maria Aronsson will not be offered a new contract by the club, announced sport director Anders Mäki. Aronsson, who was Linköping's main goalscorer 2007 and has 11 caps for Sweden, has offers from other Damallsvenskan clubs. Mäki says it is hard to tell a player that has been loyal to the club for a long time that she is not needed anymore, but thinks that she might get better conditions to develop in another club.
But the club is still looking for new players. They have so far contracted 15 players for 2008 and want another 4. One of these could be 20 year old Lisa Nilsson from 1st division side Dalsjöfors. Nilsson scored 15 goals for the club 2007.

Umeå's Maria Bergkvist forced to quit, Frida Östberg returns (?)
Umeå's veteran defender Maria Bergkvist will leave football after the UEFA Cup match against Rapide Wezemaal later this week. A persistent knee-injury cuts the 30 year old's career short as her doctor tells her she has to stop playing. Bergkvist had already agreed with Umeå on an extension of the contract over 2008 when she recieved the verdict from her doctor. Bergkvist says that she has been hurting since a knee operation last year, but thought it could be fixed afterv this season. Instead she got the verdif´ct that she has to stop playing if she wants to be able to do simple things like walk in stairs in the future.
Maria Bergkvist has been in the team for 9 years, won 6 Swedish championships and two UEFA Cups.

Possible replacement for Bergkvist? Frida Östberg! Umeå newspapers claims that the former Linköping player already has agreed to return to Umeå. Umeå's manager Roland Arnqvist admits he has been in touch with Östberg "and we will hopefully talk some more shortly", but he denies there is any deal and Frida Östberg refuses to comment. Umeå's main competitor here is Kif Örebro, where Richard Holmlund says that he has been talking to Frida a couple of months, that he would love to sign her but that he doubts that she wants to start over again in a team like Örebro.

Jessica Landström to Linköping
Hammarby's forward Jessica Landström will spend the next season at Linköping. The 22 year old has signed for one year and says she wants to play in the Olympic for Sweden and score a lot of goals for Linköping.
Landström is joined by 18 year old Petronella Ekroth. The young midfielder, presently playing for Östers IF in the 1st division, has been sought after by half the damallsvenskan clubs, including Umeå. "I want to take one step at the time", she explains her decision to turn down Umeå.

Umeå Södra offers contracts to three international players
Newcomers Umeå Södra has offered contracts to three foreign national team players. The first one has already been mentioned here, Finland's goalkeeper Minna Meriluoto, presently at FC United in Finland. The two others are "relatively well known names" according to sport director Ola Carlén, but he wants keep their identity secret until he has their signatures. He does however reveal that it is two players who played for Damallsvenskan clubs this last season and has national team experience. One of them is a defender/midfielder while the other is more offensive.
All three players are offered professional full time contracts, but Carlén adds that "they will probably want to have another job on the side". The newly promoted club will probably have the smallest budget of all Damallsvenskan clubs 2008 and pay wages accordingly.
Carlén obviously wants to keep the identity his two remaining prospects secret, but he gives up a lot of information that narrows it down to only a few players. My guess is that we are talking about either a Nigerian (Faith Ikidi and Maureen Mmadu or Cynthia Uwak) or a USA (Jill Oakes and Kacey White) duo, even if some lesser known names also fits the description.

Qbik relegation sale
Relegated Qbik seems to be losing just about their entire Damallsvenskan team:
Already this summer Jennifer Meier and Rebecca Jonsson signed for Djurgården.
Jenny Hallstenson is close to signing a contract with Kopparbergs/Göteborg.
Defender Amelie Rybeck and goalkeeper Maria Yatrakis are also supposed to be on the list over prospective signings for the Göteborg club. And I would say that Yatrakis being mentioned in connection with Göteborg probably means that the club has sobered up from their Hope Solo dreams.
Charlotte Nygren moves north and will probably end up in 1st division top side Piteå or Damallsvenskan's Sunnanå.
Young talent Julia Spetsmark is close to sign for local competitors Mallbacken.
Back-up goalkeeper My Axelsson moves to Stockholm.
Ann-Sofie Halvarsson och Lovisa Ericsson quits.
Elin Sandberg is thinking over offers from Jitex and Mallbacken in the 1st division as well as college football in Florida.
Anna Nilsson will probably take a step down and play for Skoghall in the 3rd division.

Nanna Johansen back to Denmark, Sembrant to AIK
Nanna Johansen, LDC FC Malmö and Denmark winger, has decided to leave Damallsvenskan and return to her old club Skovbakken in the Danish premier league. She has been one and a half year with the club, but have had problems holding on to a starting position in Malmö and to get used to the more physical football in Sweden. Coach Jörgen Pettersson says that Nanna's decision was made after a long dialogue. He adds that Nanna is still a young developing player and she is welcome back when she feels ready for it.

Bälinge's team captain Linda Sembrant leaves the club to join AIK. AIK's Peter Johansson calls her one of Sweden's most promising players. He is pleased to be able to fill the spot in AIK's defense after Sanna Valkonen.
Bälinge has on the other hand found new players to their much-in-need-for-improvement attack. Sunnanå's 21 year old Emma Jonsson has joined sought-after Ida Brännström, who joined from Sundsvalls DFF a short time ago. Bäliunge's coach Zaine Söderlund hopes that the two youngsters will make up the back-bone in Bälinge's new attack. Brännström is more of a target player, while Jonsson first and foremost has speed.
Bälinge is also looking at a foreign attacker, name so far not released.
Upsala Nya Tidning: Linda Sembrant till AIK, Sunnanåforward ska blomma ut i Bälinge, Guldskovinnare till Bälinge
Hammarby's Belgian midfielder Marijke Callebaut will return to Djurgården. Callebaut joined Djurgården 2004 and played with them until the summer 2005. She had problems holding a place as a starter and used a clause in her contract to change clubs to Hammarby. She has developed since and has this season been an influental player with Hammarby.

Elaine stays in Umeå, Frida Östberg leaves Linköping
Umeå IK's other Brazilian, Elaine, says that she has agreed with her club to stay for another year. She has had other offers, includiung from USA clubs, but feels at home in Umeå. The Brazilian World Cup defender, that usually is found in Umeå's midfield, is very pleased with her 2007 season: "It's my best since I moved to Europe" and thinks that she should have been nominated for best midfielder of the year. Even if she somewhat lives in Marta's shadow, she doesn't think there is any competition between them: "We come from the same country, we play for the same national team and the same club. We help and support each other. We don't compete".
Västerbottenskuriren: Elaine - proffs kluvet av längtan hem
In nother Umeå news, Hanna Folkesson, recently named MVP in the 1st division north, has decided to turn dowm Umeå IK and several other Damallsvenskan sides to stay with newly promoted Umeå Södra FF. "It seems like Södra is a better alternative for me. I feel at home here and I will get more playing time than with Umeå IK".
Umeå Södra has so far about ten players signed for their first damallsvenskan season 2008. They are working hard to reinforce their team for next season and are currently looking at the international market. No names mentioned though.
Västerbottens Folkblad: Södra ute efter nyförvärv, ...fick Hanna att stanna
To continue with the Umeå angle, former Umeå player and long-time Swedish international Frida Östberg has decided to leave Linköping FC. She hasn't decided if she wants to continue playing at all, but if Sweden qualifies for the Olympic games next year, the chances increase. Linköping's manager Anders Mäki says Frida's leaving is a loss for the club, not only on the field but also outside where she has been the club's big poster-name.
If Östberg continues in Damallsvenskan, the rumour is that she will join her former Umeå coach Richard Holmlund at Kif Örebro.
Corren: Frida Östberg lämnar LFC
Another Linköping player, forward Maria Aronsson, also seems to be on her way out. She still hasn't been offered a contract by the club and she has been in touch with other clubs, including a visit to AIK.
Aronsson was the club's best goalscorer 2007 with 9 goals and Linköping needs to strengthen their attack, but keeping Aronsson doesn't seem to be a top priority. They have made an verbal offer to Sweden's newborn star Jessica Landström, on her way from Hammarby, but they are not the only ones that are interested. But manager Mäki thinks that Djurgården, that are probably their main competitors here, already has strained their wage budget to the limit with the signings of Hingst, Svensson and Angerer.

Rebecca Smith resigns with Sunnanå
Sunnanå's Rebecca Smith, New Zealand's national team captain, has agreed to yet another year with the club. She has had offers from other clubs, including from USA, and will, unlike the last two years, only get a part time deal with Sunnanå, but still chose to stay. Smith has been troubled by a knee injury since before the World Cup, but that doesn't trouble the club. "She should be ok in February and there is plenty of time until the season start". Rebecca Smith is the 15th player to sign for Sunnanå 2008 team.

First division side Öster's talented young defender Petronella Ekeroth visited Linköping in her tour to Damallsvenskan clubs. Player news
There is a lot to cover, so I'll just throw it all together in one big bucket:
LDB FC Malmö's forward and Iceland's captain Asthildur Helgadottir has decided to give up football. The 31 year old target player, who has recieved serious injuries during her career, got hurt in the match against AIK this spring and never really recovered. A surgery in August wasn't entirely successful and Helgadottir decided that she doesn't want to risk permanent disability. Helgadottir scored 17 and 19 goals for Malmö the 2005 and 2006 seasons and the absence of a healthy Asta has visibly hurt Malmö's goalscoring this season.
Malmö's Danish international Nanna Johansen seems to be on her way from Malmö. The young winger has had problems establishing herself as a starter and will probably return to the Danish league.

Hammarby's young star Lollo Fors will leave the club. "There is nothing wrong with the coaches and players in Hammarby, but I feel a need to move to take the next step in my development", she says. The two other Stockholm sides Djurgården and AIK are possible destinations as well as LDB FC Malmö. The 18 year old, who is still in high-school, visited Malmö last week and says she will make up her mind early next week. Malmö's Jörgen Petersson hopes she joins Malmö: "She is a player that stands out and we want her to do that. It is important to take care of the profiles we have in the league".
Fotbollskanalen: AIK, DIF eller Malmö för Lollo Fors

Sanna Valkonen, 30 year old Finnish defender with more than 100 caps, leaves AIK and signs for Kif Örebro. Valkonen had present Örebro coach Richard Holmlund as her coach in Umeå a few years back. She will be joined in Örebro by two 18 year olds, midfielder Sara Fröjdfeldt and forward Kim Ekebom, both from Eskilstuna United in the 1st division and with experience from Swedish youth national teams. Fröjdfeldt (daughter to the internationally known referee Peter F) has been one of Umeå IK's targets lately, which probably adds to Holmlund's pleasure.

Linköping FC reveals that they want to sign Sweden's newborn forward star Jessica Landström from Hammarby. Chairman Christer Mård points out that they were in touch with her before she got called up for the Denmark match, but also admits that they aren't the only ones that are persuing her. Stockholm sides Djurgården, where Landström has played before, and AIK are mentioned.
Linköping are also looking at relegated Qbik's 25 year old defender Amelie Rybäck, who also has attracted interest from newcomers Kristianstad. But coach Daniel Pettersson stresses that their first priority is a "notorious goalscorer".

Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC's goalkeeper Maria Edman has signed a one plus one year contract with newcomers Kristianstads DFF. The south Swedish club has also renewed the contract with their coach duo Thomas Mårtensson and Ulf Palmquist.

Hammarby has renewed their contract with Swiss national team keeper Kathrin Lehmann. Lehmann came to Hammarby during the summer transfer window and has helped stabilize the teams defense. Another Piteå player, 17 year old Emelie Lövgren, might also be moving clubs to Sunnanå. The young defender has been approached by Sunnanå and is interested.

Potsdam's Schröder confirms Angerer's transfer
Turbine Potsdam's head coach Bernd Schröder confirmed yesterday that he has green lighted goalkeeper Nadine Angerer's move to Djurgården: "We gave a verbal promise to Nadine, and we will keep that" he says. But he is not pleased with Djurgården's chairman Per Darnell, who prematurely confirmed the news last week: "Up till now we have had a good relationship with Djurgården. I am very disappointed".

Icelandic player prospects at Djurgården
According to TV4's live coverage of the match between Djurgården and Umeå, Djurgården had a couple of interesting guests this last week: Iceland's back-up goalkeeper Gudborg Gunnarsdottir and their prolific striker Margret Lara Vidarsdottir. Gunnarsdottir is probably there as a possible back-up for Angerer, but Vidarsdottir might be what Victoria Svensson needs to collaborate with up front. The 20 year old forward scored 38 goals in 16 matches for Icelandic champions Valur this season and has 4 goals in 4 European Championship qualification matches for Iceland this year. She has been sought after by Norwegian and German clubs. She was signed by FCR Duisburg in the Bundesliga in October last year, impressed on field but never managed to settle in Germany and returned, homesick, to Iceland already in January. Hopefully Stockholm will treat her better.
Another piece of news from the broadcast, less encouraging for Djurgården fans, is that newly married winger Elin Ekblom "with 99 % certainty" will leave the team and also top football after this season to devote herself to work and family. Ekblom has been one of Djurgården's most valuable players and would probably also have had a good shot at a national team spot, had she not declined that already last year. The remaining 1 % is according to TV4 not about Djurgården, but would be following coach Benny Persson to AIK.

Angerer to replace Nordby in Djurgården's goal!
Djurgården's goalkeeper Bente Nordby will return to Norway when her two year contract runs out after this season and the club has been looking for a replacement. The solution: Germany's World Cup keeper Nadine Angerer.
Djurgården chairman Per Darnell tells that they have been in touch with Angerer for several years, but she has so far not been ready to move. It seems like her view on a foreign professional career has change once she established herself as a starter in the German national team. Djurgården has a well established friendly relation with Angerer's club Turbine Potsdam, which led to Ariane Hingst's move to the Swedish side in April 2007 and has probably also facilitated Angerer's move. The 29 year old will sign a two year contract with Djurgården and join the club in January 2008.
Per Darnell also says that he might be able to offer Bente Nordby, who has coaching ambitions, a position with the club's staff if he can solve the financial side of it.
