Match-Day 13: Reports and Reviews

QBIK suffered a possibly fatal defeat in the important relegation match against AIK. AIK's goal was a shot that first hit the cross-bar, then the ground and then bounced out into play. QBIK's hot tempered coach Dave Mosson was shown to the stands when he critizised the ruling.
Värmlands Folkblad: Ny förlust - nu är Qbik farligt nära nedflyttning

Djurgpården/Älvsjö's Benny Persson said his team slowed down the play when they were 3 goals up to save strength for the next game. He had a thin squad already getting into the match - Laura Kalmari and Jane Törnqvist didn't play against KIF Örebro, recovering from minor injuries. Then Linda Fagerström had to leave the match early with a sprained foot. He is not sure who will be back for the next match, which is against QBIK already on tuesday.

"We never got our game working, but we won and that's what's important", said goalscorer Sara Larsson after Linköping's match against Själevad. Själevad followed "to 99 %" coach Yngve Persson's tactical scheme - let's call it a variation of the "everyone behind the ball"-tactics - and it could have been a success if Therese Kapstad's late minutes shot had hit goal instead of the crossbar. Now all that remained of a good effort was an honorable defeat.

"We had a really bad first half", said Sunnanå's coach Kega Israelsson. Another explanation, suggested by his local paper, was that Malmö had a really good one. Good movement, one-touch passes and great players on all parts of the field. "This was probably the best attacking game we have played this year", said Malmö's coach Anders Johansson. But Sunnanå came out to the second half determined not to get out-played and managed to score on two set pieces. "It became a bit nervous towards the end", commented Johansson. In Kega Israelsson's opinion Malmö FF is the best team in Damallsvenskan, even if Umeå has better individual players, but Malmö still refuses to be talked into any championship speculations.

Mallbacken's new signing Lindsay Greco seems to be what the doctor ordered. Two matches, two goals and a much improved attack from Mallbacken. Erla Arnardóttir, who earlier this season explained Mallbacken's lack of success with being more afraid to lose than eager to win, now was pleased to say that they are not afraid any longer. "We've moved players a bit in the team since Lindsay arrived and now we are creating a lot more".

"It didn't work out in the last third of the field", Umeå coach André Jeglertz tries to explain the narrow win against Kopparbergs/Göteborg. "We are using to many touches on the ball and doesn't get any flow in the attacks". Kopparbergs/Göteborg's Martin Pringle was satisfied that they pressured Umeå without having to change their short passing oriented game and was even a bit disappointed that they couldn't go home with at least one point.

Match-Day 13: Sunday

Mallbackens IF - Hammarby IF  2-0  (1-0)
Mallbacken: Carola Söberg - Helena Nilsson, Louise Jonasson,Therese Stolpe, Kicki Ingvarsson - Linda Nöjd, Therese Persson, Erla Arnardóttir,  Emma Asp (Birgitta Stiernberg) - Maja Johansson (Jenny Monsén), Lindsay Greco

Goals: 1-0 Maja Johansson (5), 2-0 Lindsay Greco (48)
Attendance: 748
Mallbacken's third straight victory moves them out of the immideate relegation struggle. An injury-ridden Hammarby (Jennie Jonsson and Christina Forsell didn't show) couldn't keep up with Mallbacken, that seems to have improved their creativity in the attack since Lindsay Greco arrived.

Umeå: Sofia Lundgren - Maria Bergkvist, Anna Paulsson, Sanna Valkonen, Frida Östberg - Malin Moström, Anne Mäkinen, Elaine - Anna Sjöström, Hanna Ljungberg, Marta

Goals: 1-0 Marta (5), 1-1 Heidi Kackur (30), 2-1 Malin Moström (72)
Attendance: 1,887
After three scoreless league matches Kopparbergs/Göteborg maganed to find the goal again and for quite some time looked like they might even upset Umeå. Marta scored the first very early in the match from a corner-kick by Anne Mäkinen but the expected blow-out - it usually what happens when Umeå starts scoring early - didn't take place. Göteborg got their game working and Kackur's equalizer was no fluke. But Umeå created several scoring opportunities and Malin Moström's 2-1 goal gave a narrow but clear victory.

AIK  - QBIK  1-0 (1-0)
AIK: Sofie Holmqvist - Emilia Reimer, Sara Andersson, Hanna Jöhnk, Anna-Karin Andersson - Anna Bergendal, Hodan Siid-Ahmed, Lina Hedkvist - Anna Lundin (62 Josefin Wejner), Lena Persson, Nazanin Vaseghpanah (80 Elin Hammarman)

Goals: 1-0 Anna Lundin (15)
Attendance: 233
Anna Lundin scored on a spectacular header from a corner-kick by Hodan Siid-Ahmed, one of the few really dangerous scoring opportunities in a match that was characterized by long balls and failed attacks. The result still put some more distance between AIK and the relegation line.

Djurgården/Älvsjö:
KIF Örebro:
Goals: 1-0 Sara Thunebro (19), 2-0 Kicki Bengtsson (38 PK), 3-0 Sara Johansson (53)
Attendance: 149
In thunder and rain and in front of the smallest Damallsvenskan crowd this season Djurgården still had a good match and their attack, with the two Saras Thunebro and Johansson setting up each other, seems to work again. Örebro, that had to start without their major attacking force Lisa Dahlkvist (suspended after three accumulated yellow cards), got Emma Hebring shown off the field after bringing down a free Victoria Svensson and had to play with only 10 for almost 60 minutes.

Själevad:
Goals: 1-0 Sara Larsson (74)
Attendance: 528
Själevad played their usual tight defense, clearly aiming on getting one point from the game, and managed to keep Linköping's potentially fast and dangerous attack harmless most of the match. Sara Larsson finally scored the winner by heading in the ball from a corner-kick.

Sunnanå SK  - Malmö FF  2-3 (0-3)
Sunnanå: Åsa Berglund - Sandra Berggren, Hanna Marklund, Rebecca Smith, Maggie Esseryd - Bianca Rech, Carina Holmberg, Carolina Marklund, Mirjam Marklund (76 Lina Johansson)- Madelaine Edlund, Tiffeny Milbrett (83 Anna Boman).
Malmö: Caroline Jönsson - Malin Andersson, Denise Reddy, Therese Jönsson, Jenny Engwall - Formiga, Nilla Fischer, Therese Sjögran, Frida Nordin (Emma Stålhammar) - Asthildur Helgadottir (Mia Westerblad), Therese Lundin (Linda Blom)
Goals: 0-1 Asthildur Helgadottir (7), 0-2 Therese Lundin (21), 0-3 Therese Sjögran, 1-3 Carina Holmberg (65), 2-3 Lina Johansson (80)
Attendance: 731
Malmö impressed in the first half with great midfield play and Therese Sjögran both setting up and scoring goals. But Sunnanå is a tenacious team that doesn't give up easily. They scored two goals in the second half from free-kicks and Bianca Rech, their best player in the match, had a couple of close chances to equalize. Tiffeny Milbrett was clearly affected by her transatlantic travel, she arrived only yesterday, and didn't pose the kind of threat that Malmö was anticipating but still assisted one of Sunnanå's goals.

Attendance: 308
Djurgården are having problems with their squad after a couple of players has left the team and could only bring 2 substitutes for the game. Still that wasn't their main problem. Linda Fegerström had a great match, scoring and creating lots of opportunities but the rest of the team didn't meet expectations. AIK put up a great team effort and showed that determination can beat class, and in the second half Nazanin Vaseghpanah could equalize after a nice solo performance. "I'm proud of each and every player" said AIK's coach Christer Söderberg.

Goals: 0-1 Anna-Kaisa Rantanen (14), 1-1 Therese Lundin (26), 2-1 Malin Andersson (31)
Attendance: 753
Linköping had a better performance than in the home match last week and created much more in the forward play, but Malmö's experience made the difference. Caroline Seger had to leave the field with a thigh injury , which made Malmö's dominance in the midfield even stronger. Linköping's goal came from a nice combination involving three players ending with Rantanen scoring from a rebound. Ten minutes later Malmö scored twice over three minutes tio equalize and take the lead. The 2-1 goal was on a direct corner kick from Malin Andersson.

Örebro continues to create lots of scoring opportunities but has great problems converting them. This time they had six clear chances only in the first half. But Hammarby began to get the upper hand in the second and with a shot from distance by Marijke Callebaut, who just transfered from Djurgården, and a nice dribble by Salina Olsson they managed to get their first win ever in Örebro.

Kopparbergs/Göteborg continues to play nice football and had most of posession, but was for the third game in a row unable to score. Instead Mallbacken, who spent large parts of the match playing bunker defense, scored on a fast counter where Lindsay Greco, who played her first match for Mallbacken, recieved a long pass from Erla Arnardóttir, turned her defender and scored.

The Göteborg-Djurgården match is left from the 6th round and was originally planned to be played late May, but got postponed since it collided with Djurgården's UEFA Women's Cup finals.

In the first half most of the play was in the midfield without many scoring opportunities for either team. In the second Djurgården/Älvsjö showed a much more intense and high paced game and pressured the home side a lot. They didn't have any real edge in the finishes though and both sides left the match scoreless. Göteborg's Martin Pringle is still struggling with the team's appearent inability to score and benched their finish star forward Heidi Kackur to try out another constellation in the attack, but with no result. Pringle was still satisfied with the point and thought they showed good teamwork. Djurgården's Mikael Söderman said they didn't manage to control the match - when they do they also score a lot as in the match against AIK.

Local daily Göteborgsposten writes that Kopparbergs/Göteborg managed to play constructive and entertaining football, but in the midfield were pressured back in the second half and the forwards had to find their opportunities pretty much onm their own.

Match-Day 11: Reports and Reviews

The questionable penalty that decided the match between Linköping and Malmö was the big discussion matter the day after, but Linköping's Michael Bornehav admitted that Malmö's win still was a fair outcome of the match. "We showed our lack of experience while Malmö were more sensible and controled." Caroline Seger agreed: "We hardly created anything forward and almost panicked, shooting a lot of long balls." Malmö's Therese Sjögran was outstanding in the midfield and Malin Andersson was a constant danger forward, both on set pieces and with opening passes, while Malmö's defense at the same time seemed impenetrable. But no, Malmö still refuses to discuss the possibility of winning the championship.

Mallbacken and Göteborg both agreed that Mallbacken's goalkeeper Carola Söborg did a great match. Göteborg had, particulary in the second half, a huge advantage in possession and shots on goal. But that really doesn't help if you don't get past the goalkeeper. Mallbacken's coach Glenn Johansson voiced his disappointment that Söborg, who has a lot of U19 and U21 matches, never has been called up to the national team. Erla Arnardóttir explained that her goal from 30 meters wasn't just a fluke. She regulary stays behind after training sessions to practise shots and this was actually her second goal from afar this season.

Sunnanå's Bianca Rech dominated the midfield and also contributed with the assist to Carina Holmbergs 1-0 goal. But in the second half she began to disappear, surely partly an effect of the tough schedule she had in the Nordic Tournament, and QBIK took over. It was only defenders Smith and Marklund that managed to keep QBIK away from the goal. QBIK's coach Mosson said his team played very good and at least in the second half dominated against the league's number 3. And Sunnanå's Isaksson stressed that he was lucky to get away with the win and have to play much better next weekend at QBIK.

"We can count ourselves lucky that we've got [goalkeeper] Kristin Hammarström", a relieved Pia Sundhage said after KIF Örebro's 0-0 draw with Hammarby. Hammarström had a couple of really qualified saves and the defense, U21 player Stina Segerström worth mentioning, kept Hammarby's Salina Olsson away. But KIF has big problems in front. "We have a nice flow to our play, but it never gets really hot", Sundhage complains.

The belgian midfielder Marijke Callebaut, with Djurgården/Älvsjö until two weeks ago, made her debut for Hammarby and might be just what the team needs. Hammarby had the best chances to decide the game, but Örebro's Kristin Hammarström did great in goal. Örebro has lost most of their offensive power since Kristine Lilly left and Pia Sundhage was satisfied with the draw.

Malmö controled most of the play in a tight game and had several good shotsin the second half, forcing Linköping's Hedvig Lindahl to great saves. Erla Arnardóttir scored on a 30 meter shot and Jenny Monsén took advantage when Göteborg pushed up the team for an equalizer and scored on a fast counter attack. Victoria Svensson played her first match since the Euro semifinal against Norway. Djurgården's coach Benny Persson had planned to let Victoria come in from the bench, but when Laura Kalmari had to cancel with a minor injury he put Victoria as a starter. And she seems to have made quite a difference. Victoria, who left the pitch with just 15 minutes left, was very happy with her comeback: "Perfect! I didn't feel anything from my injuries". And the entire team seems to be back in shape now. AIK never managed to put up a real fight.

In front of a huge crowd, largely made up by players from a big youth tournament taking place in Umeå, Umeå scored a huge amount of goals on bottom-dweller Själevad. And to further accentuate Umeå's superiority not one of the goals came from a set piece. "We really helped making them look good", complained Själevad coach Yngve Persson. "We played with to much respect and never really tried to put pressure on them". Umeå's Malin Moström was happy with the speed and flow of their play and Marta was close to brilliant, both as scorer and setting up goals. Hanna Ljungberg had to leave the field in the second half with a foot injury, but she didn't think it will keep her from the next game.

"They [Göteborg] are a good team. It's nice no see that they are getting their play working and they have definitely moved a step closer", said Hanna Ljungberg, who had to watch her Umeå's match against Kopparbergs/Göteborg from the stands because of a sore throat and a slight fever. And Göteborg's coach Martin Pringle agrees: "If we had got the first goal [and there were chances] the match might have turned out different". And the arrival of Jessica Julin, who got the fan's award as best player, has helped a great deal.

Sunnanå's coach "Kega" Isaksson thought his team showed to much respect for Malmö FF. They fought back in the first half, but in the second they began to fall back and stop contesting in the midfield. "Malmö is a very god team, but we must beleive in ourselves more. If we do that this team can go a long way". heir best player was, again, Hanna Marklund who played with great authority.
Norra Västerbotten: "Vi visade för stor respekt"

"This was an unexpected bonus, and we are of course very satisfied with it", smiled a happy Yngve Persson after Själevad's draw with Linköping. Linköping was in command most of the game and Själevad had to defend themself furiously. Magda Åström having a great day in goal helped and midfielder Moa Ericsson, fresh from 2nd division only a few weeks ago, both scored and impressed with her physical play. Linköping's Mikael Bornehav was satisfied with the match, one of his team's best performances so far this year, but of course disappointed that they didn't manage to score more. Even if they moved up to third place in the league, leaders Umeå and Malmö continues to sail away from the rest.

QBIK has been doing progressivly better since the restart of the Damallsvenskan. The recipe for success seems to be hard work, better pace, less respect for their competitors and, maybe most of all, Jennifer Meier. She's been having a big influence in the team since she joined three weeks ago and this time she scored both goals in QBIK's first home win. "I've been waiting for this", she says.

Erla Arnardóttir's late goal, a long shot that caught Hammarby's goalkeeper off position, saved the day for Mallbacken. The match had a lot of opportunities and a lot of goals. "In our position [last place] we have to push forward. That makes us vulnerable in the defense. We are trying to balance that", says mallbacken coach Krister Engström. The late goal saved one point for Mallbacken, important to keep up with the three other relegation zone teams.

Hammarby's En Perlskog was very content with the their last part of the first half, when Hammaby cought up from being one goal down to get the lead. Mallabcken on the other hand found comfort in getting a point in the last minutes. "Unlike so often before we played the match until the last minute".

AIK's coach Christer Söderberg complained over tired legs and an over all worthless performance, losing almost all one-on-ones in the first half, where QBIK was the much better side. QBIK's Dave Mosson thought it should have been more than 2-0, when both their german striker Meier and Anna Nilsson missed good chances. After Josefin Wejner's 2-1 it became "unneccesary exciting".

In front of a big crowd, largely made up by players from the big youth tournament Gothia Cup, Umeå and Göteborg put up a good game. A lot of play in the midfield and Göteborg could have got the upper hand had not Sofia Lundgren in Umeå's goal denied Lotta Schelin two times. Marta showed her best side building up for Umeå's first goal and Anne Mäkinen was the midfield general.

Örebro:
Djurgården/Älvsjö:
Goals: 0-1 Linda Fagerström (47), 0-2 Sara Thunebro (74)
Attendance: 978
It took Djurgården/Älvsjö half the match go wear down the teenagers in KIF Örebro, and particulary their keeper Kristin Hammarström, but then they began to score on their chances. All in all Djurgården's best match for a long time. Sara Johansson was useful in a Victoria Svensson (still in rehab) position just behind the other two forwards. KIF Örebro's Pia Sundhage informed that there probably will not be any new americans during the fall season.

Malmö: Caroline Jönsson - Malin Andersson, Denise Reddy, Therese Jönsson, Jenny Engwall - Formiga, Therese Sjögran, Nilla Fischer, Emma Stålhammar (72 Frida Nordin) - Asthildur Helgadottir (80 Linda Blom), Therese Lundin (87 Mia Westerblad)
Sunnanå: Åsa Berglund - Sandra Berggren, Hanna Marklund, Rebecca Smith, Linnea Gjersvold - Carina Holmberg, Carolina Marklund, Bianca Rech (60 Johanna Lindahl), Magdalena Esseryd - Lina Johansson, Anna Boman
Goals: 1-0 Nilla Fischer (32), 2-0 Asthildur Helgadóttir (70)
Attendance: 674
Great performance by Malmö's Nilla Fischer, who won almost everything in midfield and contributed to give her team a distinct advantage in the match. Sunnanå wasn't without chances, among them a shot in the crossbar by Anna Boman and a shot from distance by Bianca Rech that Malmö's keeper Caroline Jönsson just managed to tip over, but Malmö's win was never threatened. With better finishing, or a worse defence than Sunnanå's, the win had been larger. Sunnanå's strong centre defense (Hanna Marklund and Rebecka Smith) made Malmö mostly building their attacks on the right side (Malin Andersson and Formiga), which resulted in the first goal, a long pass from Malin Andersson where Nilla Fischer ran in behind Sunnanå's defenders. The second came from a nice passing sequence down the middle where Formiga's pass to Asthildur Helgadóttir opened up the defense. Sunnanå was missing their striker Madeleine Edlund (couldn't get the time off from work!) and their important midfielder Bianca Rech had to limp off the pitch after a collision. Didn't seem that serious though, she came back and played for a couple of minutes before she was subbed out.

Natioanl team coach Thomas Dennerby was present, "looking at players from both teams", but mentioned Nilla Fischer, Therese Lundin and Emma Stålhammar as interesting new players.Sunnanå's Bianca Rech commented that the high pace and the the physical play is the big difference from the Bundesliga.

Linköping had most of the match and pressured hard towards the end in the heavy rain trying to get a winning goal, but Magda Åstrand, subbing in after Anna Hofwing had to be carried out with a knee injury, did a great job in Själevads goal. Linköping's coach Mikael Bornehav said it was one iof his team's best performances this year, creating a lot of scoring chances, they just couldn't get it to work the whole way. Själevad's Yngve Persson was very pleased that the team was able to bounce back from the Wednesday 6-0 defeat.

Match-Day 9: Reports and Reviews

Before the season started most predictions had Malmö FF looking forward to a troubled year - three national team players had left the club and their finances were so strained that they couldn't recruit substitutions. Today the headlines are talking about Malmö as winners, as they seem to have ran away from the rest of the league together with Umeå. Coach Anders Johansson explains that the players are both more relaxed and determined than last year. Nobody feels the pressure to win the championship - talking about the gold seems to be a big no-no with both players and coaches - but everyone is determined to show that the predictions were wrong. The only sign that they are thinking about bigger thing was Nilla Fischer's disappointment that Umeå scored 5 against Hammaby while Malmö only managed 2 against AIK, Umeå moving to 1st place on goal difference: "It does get to you. It is nice to be on top of the table".
Dagens Nyheter: Malmö FF har blivit vinnarlaget
Aftonbladet: Succén fortsätter för krislaget MFF

Djurgården/Älvsjö's coach Benny Persson's announced changes included moving Kicki Bengtsson back as left back and putting Sara Thunebro in the midfield. Thunebro was very active and contributed to Djurgården's first goal and more than one scoring opportunity. Three goals in one match was probably a little relieving for a team that scored only 7 in their previous 7 matches.

Also QBIK has improved their attacking game (since hiring Jennifer Meier?) and coach Mosson likes the way they are improving. But they are still to nervous and undecided coming into the last third of the field where the attacks often dies with bad passing decisions. They will work on better communication, better passes and a more patient play.

Göteborg's coach and players were in a triumphant mood after the 2-0 win against the pre-match favourites Linköping. After two unneccesary defeats (against AIK and Sunnanå) their play finally worked. They dominated the midfield completely the first 30 minutes, forcing Linköping to abandon their usual 4-3-3. Two decisions by Linköping's coach contributed to the defeat, according to local daily Corren - Jessica Julin in Göteborg's midfield was left unmarked and the 4-3-3 was a bad choice, leaving Linköping one player short at midfield. "This is the kind of matches we must learn to win before we become one of the big teams", commented Linköping's coach Bornehav. But his goal for the season is still to compete for a 3rd place. Göteborg's Lotta Schelin talks about jessica Julin's importance for the team: "She fits right in to the way we want to play".

The Mallbacken syndrome, analyses local paper Värmlands Folkblad, is that when they play the bigger teams they can play with courage and pace, but when they play teams they should be able to defeat they drop several steps in quality. KIF Örebro is a team they should be able to get at least a point from. Midfielder Erla Arnardóttir explains: "We are much to scared to lose. And we're thinking way to much. We have to stop doing that".

- "Football can be a really cruel sport" commented Själevad's coach Yngve Persson. 6-0 sounds like a total blow-out, but the match was undecided for more than an hour. Bianca Rech needed three shots to score the important 2-0 goal, but from there everything seemed to work for Sunnanå. Player of the match was Sunnanå's Maggie Esseryd, starting as wide defender and then moved up to midfield as a winger, playing an essential role in building up the attacks.

"I'm of course never satisfied with a defeat", said AIK's coach Christer Söderberg, "but I'm satisfied with my team's performance". And AIK had a pretty good match against a Malmö side that seemed less inspired than last Sunday. Malmö's keeper Caroline Jönsson was forced to a couple of really tough saves, including one Lena Persson penalty kick. Malmö's goals was from a Malin Andersson free kick that Nilla Fischer (player of the match according to TV4) forced into goal and Therese Lundin being first on a rebound from AIK's keeper. Malmö's Anders Johansson commented that this was the kind of match that Malmö very well might have lost last season, but this year they've shown that they can win even when their game isn't working they way it should.

Last year's champions are still having problems. "At least we were playing good attacking football", Djurgården's Benny Persson said. Even if QBIK came back the last 15 minutes of the match, Persson was never really worried.

In a pre-game interview with Stockholm daily Svenska Dagbladet, Benny Persson talks about the teams "crisis" and says the players realize that they don't play the way they know they can: "It's like we don't dare to play football". "But we are great on training sessions", Persson says, "This is all in the head. They know defending the championship will be really hard. So we've decided to shift our focus. KIF Örebro has been having great problems with their attack and this time coach Pia Sundhage had ordered her players to shoot whenever they saw the opportunity. Two goals was the result, twice as many as the two last matches put together. The end of the match became nervous for Örebro, Maja Johansson having reduced Örebro's lead to one goal, and as Sundhage commented "it showed that we have a really young team". Match-Day 8: Reports and reviews

After the defeat to Malmö FF has Djurgården/Älvsjö's Sara Johansson given up her hopes for a gold this year. Now they have to concentrate on finding back to the play that made them champions last year. Having Victoria Svensson yet again on the injury list hurts the team a lot. Malmö FF's goalscorer Jenny Engwall on the other hand refuses to talk about gold, in spite of the club's very good standing and a very persistent radio reporter. But she admits that she has been thinking about the fact that the last match this season will be at Umeå.

Umeå's Hanna Ljungberg is happy to have scored twice in the win over Mallbacken -"that hasn't happened for a long time with the club team", but thinks that both Umeå and Malmö will lose points before their encounter in October. Kicki Wiklund was very happy to be starting for Umeå, but thought, just like coach André Jeglertz, that they lost pace in the second half. It could be the heath, most of Sweden had temperatures in the 30s yesterday. Mallbacken's Jenny Monsén admitted that Umeå looked pretty much on holiday the second half, but were still satisfied with the goalwise narrow defeat.

"We have to do better that this if we want to stay in the league", complained KIF Örebro coach Pia Sundhage after the 0-0 match against QBIK. The team has dropped in quality and courage since Lilly and Markgraf left. Sundhage's negotiations with Christie Welsh are still ongoing and the key point seems to be if and how often Welsh should be allowed to skip league matches for e.g. US national team friendlies. QBIK's dave Mosson on the other hand is pleased with his team: "We are getting better and better." The two new players Jennifer Meier (directing in the midfield) and Annica Svensson (stabilizing the defense) has been very important.

Sunnanå's coach "Kega" Israelsson said that the big difference between his team and Göteborg was that his forwards took better care of their opportunities. Hanna Marklund and Rebecca Smith worked very good together in the centre defense.

Goals: 0-1 Josefine Öqvist (25), 0-2 Malin Gustafsson (30)
Attendance: 434
Linköping dominated big in the first half, with a fast, attacking play with mostly one-touch passes. With Caroline Seger resting (thigh injury) Malin Gustafsson stepped up in the midfield and made the assist to Öqvist's goal and scored the second herself with a shot from 25 meters. Hammarby, without an injured Salina Olsson, stepped up in the second half and should maybe have converted at least one of their opportunities. Hammarby coach En Perlskog commented on their two new american college players, Maureen Metzger and Lindsay Demeree (both played), and said that they will stay with the club "at least for the rest of the season". Perlskog also announced that he will not bring his best side to Umeå on Wednesday "It's more important to rest players with minor in juries like Salina Olsson for the match against Mallbacken next weekend"

An entertaining match between two good sides, both sides playing constructive and creating a lot of opportunities. The longer the match went on, the more Malmö got the upper hand and pretty much dominated things the last 30 minutes. Djurgården's Maja Åström was forced to some serious goalkeeping. Jenny Engwall, not the likeliest scorer, got the last foot on the ball following a Malin Andersson corner kick and a header from Formiga.Malmö played with more confidence than Djurgården, who most likely said goodbye to any real chances of reclaiming the championship title.

Match-Day 7: Reports and reviews

Djurgården/Älvsjö's new head coach Benny Persson they won the match, and that's what ultimately matters most, but there are things to change and to better. He promises some changes already to next weekend, when his team will be facing Malmö FF.
Djurgården/Älvsjö

Västerbottens Folkblad's sports columnist Tomas Ruuth writes that Umeå shouldn't think too much about their win over a weakened KIF Örebro. Hanna Ljungberg, who was really hot in Sweden's match against Norway, had yet a difficult match and Karolina Westberg looked out of place as a wide defender. Elaine and Maria Bergkvist will be suspended next match (accumulated yellow cards), but that is actually a good thing since it means more playing time for the youngsters. He also predicts that Sunnanå, when Milbrett returns next month, can be the team of the fall season.
Västerbottens Folkblad: Avstängningarna positiva för UIK

Själevad's coach Yngve Persson was very upset over the red card given to Kristina Arnlöf at the end of the match: "This was only tough tackles and hard competition for the ball. A red card here was girls team refereeing." The sending off probably contributed to Djurgården getting their winning goal.

The upset of the week? Not to AIK coach Christer Söderberg: "I know we have the capacity to play even against the mid-table teams. This is just the first time it worked all the way." Göteborg's coach Martin Pringle admitted AIK was the better side today. From the reports it seems like AIK won the game in the midfield, much thanks to Yolanda Odenyo. Jessica Juhlin did not start for Göteborg, it appears all papers aren't filed yet.

Comfortable win for Linköping, where they, unlike a couple of games earlier this spring, did a better second half than first. Linköping seemed really hungry, especially Maria Karlsson who went to England, but didn't get any playing-time there. Midfilder Anna-Kaisa Rantanen filled in in the defense and did it good. Caroline Seger had to leave after 70 minutes with a shoulder injury. No word on how serious yet, so probably not very.

A less impressive Malmö than earlier this season still managed to take home three points. "Both Malmö goals came on counters", said QBIK coach Dave Mosson, who thought they did a good match against one of the best sides in the league, particulary in defense. Jennifer Meier made her debut for QBIK and seems to be able to better the teams attack a lot.

Sunnanå dominate the match completely and should have won bigger. The only goal was a header by Hanna Marklund after a corner kick. The two new players from the german Bundesliga Rebecca Smith (centre defense together with Hanna Marklund) and Bianca Rech (midfield) distinguish themselves and Hammarby coach En Perlskog said he's never seen Sunnanå that good.

The Sunnanå match started with a silent minute in honour of the local paper Norra Västerbotten's sports editor Thomas Hedlund (you might remember him from the airport interview with Tiffeny Milbrett), who passed away just a couple of days ago. He's made sure the news coverage of women's football in his area has been of very high quality and I too would like to pay my respect.

Just like Linköping, Umeå seemed really hungry to get playing again. KIF Örebro, that now without Lilly, Markgraf and Monroe almost seemed like a U21 side, and never threatened the home team. With Frida Östberg on yellow card suspension Karolina Westberg got to play her full 90 minutes for the first time (I think) this season. Hanna Ljungberg, back from rehab, also played the whole match. Pia Sundhage commented that KIF got a valuable lesson in football and were satisfied with their second half of the match, where they managed to hold Umeå to 1-1.
