Caroline Jönsson out with ACL tear

Malmö's and Sweden's starting goalkeeper Caroline Jönsson had a knee injury during training last Thursday. A medical examination yesterday confirmed that it is an ACL tear. The 29 year old will miss the rest of the season.

"This is very unfortunate" comments national team coach Thomas Dennerby. "She has played every important national team match since 2005 and should have been our first choice in the World Cup."

Jönsson, who understandably is very sad and hasn't spoke to any media, writes in a press release that this is an extremely bad time for an injury: "I will miss the Damallsvenskan finish, where we definitely are in the running for a top position, the Swedish Cup semifinal and of course the World Cup. There is really nothing else to do than face the facts and look forward to the next season."

Caroline Jönsson's injury comes at a really bad time for Sweden. With a new playing system, a completely revamped midfield and a fairly new combination in defense her calm and experience would have been needed. Together with Öqvist's recent injury and Jönsson's natural replacement Hedvig Lindahl just coming off a long rehabilitation period following her ACL injury, this can hurt Sweden's chances in the World Cup a lot.

Thomas Dennerby has submitted the preliminary 30 player list for the World Cup to FIFA. The list isn't public, but rumour has it that Hedvig Lindahl, in spite of only having played two Damallsvenskan matches since her injury, is on that list. The other frontrunner to replace Jönsson is AIK's Sofia Lundgren.

Brazil wins gold and travels to Umeå

Brazil with Umeå's Marta and Elaine defeated USA's U20 team 5-0 in the Pan American Games and got their gold medals in front of some 70,000 at the Maracana stadium. Marta scored two goals, both on penalty-kicks. There is a video from Brazilian broadcaster Globo, where you also can see Marta with her feet in cement. Her name and footprints will, as the first of a female player, be forever displayed at Maracana's Walk of Fame side by side with the likes of Pelé, Ronaldo and Franz Beckenbauer. Picture here. The news of the Walk of Fame inauguration was presented like this on Swedish television.

For those with proficiency in Portugese or with enough patience to use babelfish, Globo.com is a great site to check out the current Martamania in Brazil.

The Brazilian World Cup team will travel to Sweden and Umeå for their final training camp before going to China. They will arrive around August 20 and stay for about 10 days, revealed Umeå's general manager Roland Arnqvist yesterday. A warm-up match between Umeå and Brazil is scheduled as well as another match somewhere in the Stockholm area, opposition yet to be decided.
Brazil had a similar camp in Umeå preparing for the 2004 Olympics and they were appearently satisfied enough to want to repeat it.

Internationals

Sweden tied England in the last Nordic Cup match 1-1 (goal by Bälinge's Linda Sembrandt). Since it was a placement match it had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out, which England won and Sweden's U23 finished 6tyh and last in this year's Nordic Cup. Norway played for third place, defeating Finbland 3-0. Umeå's June Pedersen subbed in after 74 minutes.

Brazil with Umeå's Marta and Elaine had much more problems against Mexico than when they defeated Canada in the previous match, but finally managed a 2-0 win. Brazil will now play USA's U20 in the Pan Am games final.

Time is running out for Hanna Ljungberg

On June 20 Hanna Ljungberg left the Sweden-Hungary match with an injured calf. The prognosis then was four to six weeks rest and rehabilitation before she could play again. Four weeks later Hanna says there is no way she could play today: "I might try to start running a bit this week, but I'm not taking any risks". But time is running out. She will, at the most, get to play three matches before the World Cup squad will be announced. But as the hardened forward comments "I'm used to be injured and I'm good at getting back again".

Asthildur Helgadottir, Malmö's and Iceland's 31 years old forward, will have surgery to deal with a meniskus problem that has troubled her since early this season. Her coach Jörgen Pettersson hopes to have her back in October for the last Damallsvenskan matches.

More summer break internationals

Marta scored 5 goals when Brazil steamrolled Canada 7-0 in front of some 25,000 at the Maracaná stadium in the last group match in the Pan Am games. Marta said that playing in front of such a big home crowd at the legendary arena was very emotional for her: "I had to concentrate not to start crying on the field". Marta's Umeå team mate Elaine also started, as in the previous matches she played in defense. Brazil will face Mexico in the semifinal.

In addition to those mentioned in the post from the 15th, we have a few new player sightings:

During the four matches played since the June break for internationals, Malmö and Djurgården has closed in on Umeå, forming a fairly tight top three, while Göteborg is sliding down towards the middle of the table. Sunnanå, Linköping and Örebro has all overtaken Bälinge, but these midtable teams are still within four points of each other. In the bottom, AIK moved from 11th to 9th, still only two points from relegation.

5 : Linda Forsberg (Djurgården),Jessica Landström (Hammarby), Ma Xiaoxu (Umeå), Sanna Talonen (Bälinge), Therese Sjögran (Malmö)

I would have liked to show assists too, but there are no official stats. But a few clubs keeps records of their own and Elin Ekblom (Djurgården) with 10 assists so far is probably close to the top.

I am not particulary fond of this kind of statistics. It's pretty obvious that you will find keepers from teams like Umeå, Djurgården and Malmö at the top, since these usually dominate their games and only rarely allows their goalkeepers to be challenged. And goalies like Maria Yatrakis and Malin Andersson, who actually are really good, suffers a lot from playing for mediocre teams. But I know no other way to do stats for goalkeepers as long as nobody counts their saves.

The league average is 979, a healthy recovery from last year's 814. Still, there are seven rounds of matches left. Umeå is the big crowd-puller; all matches with more than 2,000 in the crowd has been Umeå matches, home or away, and 14 of their 15 matches have pulled more than the league average.

Damallsvenskan summer break

Damallsvenskan is now on a three week break, matches will resume the first weekend in August. While most players, coaches and offices will be on vacation, some are playing elsewhere:

Pan American Games
The Pan American Games in Rio, Brazil, features a women's football competition with Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Jamaica, Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay and a U20 selection from the United States. Umeå's Marta and Elaine both played in Brazil's 5-0 win over Jamaica, Marta scoring on a penalty kick. If I remember correctly, this was Marta's first match for Brazil since the Olympic Games 2004. The match was Brazil's second in the group. The first, played before the Umeå players had arrived, was also a win, 4-0 over Uruguay. The group games will finish July 20, and will be followed by semifinals July 23 and a final the 26th.
XV Pan American Games Rio 2007

All Africa Games
Perpetua Nkwocha (Sunnanå) and Cynthia Uwak (Falköping) both plays for Nigeria in the 9th All Africa Games in Algeria. Nigeria has so far played a 2-2 draw with South Africa and defeated Ethiopia 3-0, which qualifies them for the semifinals. The other competing teams are Ghana, Algeria and Senegal. Semis are scheduled for July 18 and the final the 22nd.
CAF: 9th ALL AFRICAN GAMES - ALGERS 2007

U23 Nordic Cup
The open Nordic Championships for U23 teams takes place in Finland between July 18 and 24, this time a 6 team tournament. Finland, Norway and Sweden are joined by England, Germany and USA. Besides the players in the Swedish team, that was announced a couple of days ago, Umeå's June Pedersen will play for Norway.

Friendlies
Two international friendlies with possible (I haven't seen any roster announced yet) Damallsvenskan appearences will be played during the league break. Holland plays North Korea in Volendam July 29th and Malmö's Manon Melis is usually a starter for Holland. Germany and Denmark has scheduled a friendly July 29 in Magdeburg, Germany. We should see Djurgården's Ariane Hingst and Dorte Dalum Jensen playing against each other and might also see Malmö's Nanna Johansen.

Linköping physician quits after disagreement over training and injuries

"Linköping are gambling with their players health" was club physician Jan Ekstrand's final verdict as he decided to leave his position with the club. His decision was prompted by the clubs refusal to support his position that Josefine Öqvist should wait with her knee surgery until the swelling has subsided rather than doing it immediately. But he also stated that four serious knee injuries cannot be explained by bad luck. "The club says that they want the medical team to take part in the injury prevention work, but we have no influence at all". Ekstrand said he would have liked to have a say concerning e.g. season planning and choice of turf, but if the club management don't listen to advice, there is no point in staying.
Linköping's management dismissed the allegations, claiming it was preposterous to accuse the club of not caring about their players. "Our cooperation [with the medical team] has been excellent" said general manager Anders Mäki and suggested that Ekstrand left because Josefine Öqvist preferred another physician to perform her knee surgery.

Josefine Öqvist, who had her knee surgery last Wednesday, also criticized her club "It's really important to find time to rest and not just train and train". She thought that the lack of rest could be to blame for her team mate Anna-Kaisa Rantanen's injury: "She played four full matches in Algarve Cup and was really tired, but still had to play and injured herself". Linköping's head coach Daniel Pettersson commented that it was Rantanen's own choice to play. He also claimed that you really can't train too much, but agreed that it is very important to find the time to recover.

Roadtrip

I'll be on the road for a week or so, and posting may be sporadic. What's new about that, you may ask. Well, me giving you advance notice?

Josefine Öqvist to miss World Cup with ACL tear

Josefine Öqvist, the Linköping and Sweden forward, will not be able to participate in the World Cup in China. Linköping's team physician Jan Ekstrand confirmed today that Öqvist's knee injury is a torn anterior cruciate ligament. It will take at least five to six months before she can play again.
Öqvist has until now had a great season and has established herself as a regular starter with the national team. She is the fourth Linköping player to suffer the same injury this season.
Damfotboll.com:

Update:
Josefine Öqvist was devastated after getting the bad news, reported Jan Ekstrand, and was not up to giving any comments. Sweden national team coach Thomas Dennerby was also taken by the news: "I couldn't imagine it would be that bad. .. There is no natural replacement for Öqvist. She is unique and has been one of our best in the national team during the spring."
Corren: LFC-stjärnan missar VM

Öqvist injury might put WWC start in jeopardy

The knee injury, that forced Linköping's Josefine Öqvist to break the match against Göteborg yesterday, might be more serious than first impression indicated. Her club physicist Jan Ekstrand will make an exploratory surgery tomorrow, Friday. "I can make a good guess on what the problem is, but I've learned not to do that", Ekstrand answered questions from journalists on the nature of the injury. Hopes, not the least from Öqvist, are still that it will turn out to be a less severe ligament or meniskus injury, that usually takes about a month to heal. Öqvist, who has been a regular starter with the national team this year, will be the fourth Linköping player to undergo knee surgery this season.

There are three clearly separated groups; four teams in the top, four in the middle and four at the bottom. And we can see pretty much the predicted teams in these groups, even if the first half had at least some unexpected results.

Falköping started the season by defeating Örebro and Linköping at home but has since shown their vulnerability, particularly in defence. Their big signing Cynthia Uwak has yet to make any visible contribution while their home-grown attackers Linnea Liljegärd and Sandra Krantz are some of the few players in the team that has shown Damallsvenskan qualities. I still doubt they will be able to repeat their relative success from the first half of the season.

AIK and Linköping have been the big under performers. I think AIK shows that team-building is hard but important. It isn't just good players that are needed. Falköping has not at all as good players, but the team has been playing together for ages while AIK has been having problems getting the numerous new players to gel with the old ones. And if you look at the stats, you can see that AIK has a quality defence (Lundgren, Valkonen, Höglund and Julin makes up a quality centre line, defensively speaking), but can't score for the love of god. Naza Vaseghpanah scored loads of goals last year in the 1st division, but nothing this year. She (as well as Kalmari) has been troubled by injuries, but I think this mostly shows that Damallsvenskan is a much tougher environment for a striker than the 1st division. I really hope they hang on, though. Such a dedicated effort from one of the major football clubs should be rewarded.

Linköping was very highly touted before the season and I too had expected a little more, even if I never saw them as championship material. They were in my opinion the weakest of the Djurgården/Malmö/Linköping trio last year and didn't manage to find any serious reinforcements. The Mmadu/Ikidi signings were a bit of last minute desperation when Rantanen got injured and while they are by no means bad players, they are not the top quality Linköping were looking for and would have needed. They really should advance a couple of steps in the second half, but this will be the first time they do worse than the previous season.

Örebro's loss of coach Pia Sundhage could have been much worse for the team and there was a lot of anger and feeling of betrayal among the players when she left for China. Team captain Stina Segerström said that if they had just known that she would be replaced by Rikard Holmlund, it had been much easier to cope. Still, Holmlund's positive effect remains to be seen. They did just as well without a head coach as they have done with him.

Sunnanå has been much more consistent than I thought they would. They have problems in the attack (maybe the new signing Nkwocha might better that), but have a great defense and are really strong at home, drawing both Djurgården and Malmö. Still, they will not leave the mid-table group.

Bälinge made a lot of high profile signings, Anne Mäkinen topping the list, keeping very few players from last year's starting eleven. It took some time for them to get the team to work and are still mixing highs with lows. The loss of Finnish striker Sanna Talonen (to college in Florida) who has been essential to their attack, can be tangible, but I still can't see them anywhere else than mid table when the season is finished.

Göteborg has big aspirations, but still have some way to go. The loss of Ingvild Stensland to injury already in the second match hurt a lot and they are extremely dependant on Lotta Schelin. When things work out for Schelin, they can defeat Djurgården and when not, they draw Qbik. They will probably finish closer to the mid table than to the top, if not Stensland's return manages to stabilize the team.

Malmö was, strangely enough, mostly predicted on a 5th or 6th place in the pre season talk. I was more with Malmö's coach Pettersson, who boldly claimed it was him or maybe Umeå's Jeglertz who had the strongest squad. Nine Malmö players have played national team matches this year, another five has played U21. Their centre midfield is Sweden's centre midfield. Players like Jenny Engwall and Linda Blom, who left because they didn't even make the bench, are now regulars with Göteborg and Bälinge. And Emma Herbring and Lollo Östman, who were regulars with Jitex and Örebro last year, have problems making the bench. In spite of the lack of well-known names and big stars, this is a really strong team. I still have them as number three, not so much for narrow losses against Umeå and Djurgården as for their proven ability to lose or draw against just about any bottom dweller, which this first half season was AIK.

That leaves Djurgården as the only real contender to Umeå. Their last round win over Umeå was crucial, the importance psychological as much as points in the table. The psychological effect of the Umeå match is important. Djurgården have a history of completely dropping out of games when they feel there isn't anything to fight for anymore but they can do wonders when they're motivated. Djurgården has a quality first eleven, but is a bit thin behind that. A Bente Nordby or Victoria Svensson injury would be devastating. Barring that, second place with an option for first.

Umeå will win again, not undefeated and not with a 21 points margin, but they will win. Andrée Jeglertz explains it best himself: "we can keep high quality and edge even against the bottom teams and our will to win is so strong that it decides close matches in our favour. Both Djurgården and Malmö have lost points against teams they are much better than and I believe they will continue to do that." The only weak point I can see is Umeå's thin squad. They are all high quality players, but they only had 15 outfield players available when the season started and with a few injuries (Frisk already lost for the season, making it 14), they can be in trouble. They should go shopping in July if Jeglertz shall be able to sleep well at nights.

L8 worth SEK 70 millions

Göteborg's and Sweden's star forward Lotta Schelin has, as earlier mentioned here, tattooed her L8 signature to her right forearm. Tabloid Expressen talked to the brand analyst Jan Källman, who said that Lotta and her brand name could be worth as much as SEK 70 millions. Lotta is one of Sweden's most successfull and talked about athletes ansd active in a global sport. "It takes personality, charisma and a good name to be successfull in developing a brand name", Källman said and predicted that if Lotta manages to stay in focus for 10 more years, the marketing value could be SEK 70 millions. Lotta Schelin's reaction: "Oh, shit! It would be nice to see that money some day".

Money makes the ball go around

The Swedish Football Association signed a deal with the big insurance company Folksam, making them official partners with the women's national team and main sponsors for Damallsvenskan. The deal gives the insurance company advertising rights on all damallsvenskan match kits and arenas. The value of the deal is as almost always confidential, but the insurance company will also take part in a major knee injury prevention project, focused at young female players. "A teenage girl runs a four times greater risk to suffer a serious knee injury than a boy in the same age", says Folksam's manager for sports insurances.

Umeå IK has made a deal with Swedish Volkswagen, making them their main partner for the 2007/08 UEFA Women's Cup. Last season there were more than 13 hours live television from Umeå IK's matches in the cup. The matches against Arsenal attracted 4 million viewers. Volkswagen, that has been Umeå's main partner in Damallsvenskan for several years, is hoping for a successfull run: "The team has the potential to reach a top position in Europe, just like Volkswagen".

I don't think there is much money involved here, but the official 2007 Women's World Cup song for the Swedish national team will be written and performed by the, let's call it electronic disco, trio Bodies Without Organs. The group promises that the song will be more of an anthem than a chant. "Women's football has too much elegance and class for a simple chant". We won't hear it until August 14, when both the song and the World Cup squad will be presented, but it might sound something like this (youtube video). Not really my cup of tea, but...

Hanna and the others - injury round-up

Hanna Ljungberg recieved an injury in the left calf muscle in Sweden's match against Hungary. This will keep her in rehab for 4 to 6 weeks, but she is still determined to be fit for the World Cup in China in September. She actually looks almost cheerfull at the press conference, an encouraging change from the tearfull, angry and disappointed Hanna that left the field last Wednesday.

Umeå's Johanna Frisk suffered a anterior cruciate ligament tear in her left knee, playing for Umeå in the defeat against Djurgården. She is to recieve surgery two weeks after the injury took place, which is about now. This will be followed by approximately 6 months rehab training, keeping her away from the game until spring 2008.

Göteborg's Norwegian midfielder Ingvild Stensland, who got injured already in her second Damallsvenskan match in April, played heer first match since injury with Göteborg's reserves last week. She will most likely be back with her team for the Damallsvenskan match against Linköping on June 27. She will start on the bench, but may get some time on the field.
Göteborgsposten: Comeback för Ingvild Stensland

Linköping FC had to see three players suffer ACL injuries during the spring. Goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl was the first, already in February, and she is now close to finishing her rehab period. She has played two matches the last week, first in a regional cup against a 5th level team and then 45 minutes in a match with the reserves. She is hoping for a come-back with the full team already this week. And there are still the possibility to make the team for China: "We have not closed the door for her", says national team coach Thomas Dennerby.

Anna-Kaisa Rantanen, Linköping's experienced Finnish midfielder, got injured in March and their young talent Maja Krantz recieved her ACL injury in May. Both of these still have some way to go, but we might see Rantanen on the field in the fall matches.

AIK's 18 year old Danielle Wallander, who has seen some action with the first team this season, got injured on training last week, and damage to knee ligament and cartilage is suspected. A medical examination later this week will give more answers, but 2 months rehabilitation is expected.

Damallsvenskan spending too much on player wages?

The yearly financial report for Damallsvenskan shows that the total turnover for the league continues to increase and was 15 % larger in 2006 than the year before, combined club incomes now at SEK 48,7 millions. But at the same time spending is growing faster than revenues and the combined result for all clubs in 2006 showed a SEK 2,5 millions deficit. And since the increased revenues were entirely explained by the new TV deal 2006, the economic result caused some concern. Umeå, Qbik and Djurgården all showed big deficits (SEK 1,7 millions, 1 million and 600,000 respectively), deficits that cannot be repeated in 2007 without forcing the clubs into bankrupcy. The growing cost for player wages, that now accounts for 25 % of the total spending in the league (compared to 18 % in 2005 and 5 % in 2002) was pointed out as one of the main problems.
The Swedish FA's auditors expressed particular concern for the Stockholm clubs. Hammarby and Djurgården were the two clubs with the smallest earnings and Djurgården the only club that, in spite of the big increase in TV revenues, showed a decrease in incomes 2006. On the bright side, all clubs were granted a renewed Damallsvenskan license for 2007.

Some interesting facts from the audit:
In spite of the big drop in match attendance, ticket revenues grew from SEK 3,1 millions to SEK 3,4 millions. Appearently the clubs are getting better in attracting full price paying costumers to their matches. Most clubs use heavily discounted team tickets for youth teams and occasional free entrance matches to boost attendancy figures. The average income per spectator grew from around SEK 20 to SEK 30 in 2006. The full ticket price usually is somewhere between SEK 70 and SEK 100.
Umeå is still the biggest club in financial terms, with a SEK 9 million income 2006. But their growth has been only 89 % since 2001, the lowest growth rate in the league. All other clubs have at least doubled their incomes and the fastest growing club economy is Sunnanå with a 346 % increase since 2001.
If you try to make some kind of cost-benefit analysis, you can see that the Stockholm clubs Djurgården and Hammarby are the most successfull in getting value for money, spending about SEK 75,000 for every point earned in the league. Umeå had to spend SEK 169,000 per point and Qbik, with their costly but unfullfilled ambition to establish the club at a midlevel position, topped the list with a staggering SEK 469,000 per point.
The average player wage 2006 was SEK 48,500 a year, almost the double of the 2005 average 25,000 and 14 times as large as the 2001 average. But the wage span is huge. It would take more than a full 11 player team earning nothing to make up for one Marta.

Qbik's coach Janne Jansson will leave key players outside the squad when his team plays Göteborg today. Jennifer Meier and Ifeoma Dieke have minor injuries and Jansson wants to save them for the more crucial match against relegation competitors Falköping on Sunday. The team will also have to cope with the fact that their excellent goalkeeper Maria Yatrakis is suspended for the match following her red card against Malmö.

Umeå's former keeper Sofia Lundgren will play her old team when AIK hosts the champions today. In an interview with a local Umeå newspaper, she says that Umeå is not as good as they were last season and that everything now revolves around Marta, with Moström and Mäkinen missing. From my point of view, she is stating pretty obvious facts, but her statement has unsurprisingly created some attention in Umeå.

Sweden U21 to play Switzerland

Sweden's U21 team will play two matches against Switzerland's full national team June 15 and 17. The Swedish squad, first presented June 1, was recently modified as Sunnanå's midfielder Anna Bodén had to recline the invitation to nurse an injury.
